Joint Energy Minimization and Resource Allocation in C-RAN with Mobile Cloud

Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has emerged as a potential candidate of the next generation access network technology to address the increasing mobile traffic, while mobile cloud computing (MCC) offers a prospective solution to the resource-limited mobile user in executing computation intensive tasks. Taking full advantages of above two cloud-based techniques, C-RAN with MCC are presented in this paper to enhance both performance and energy efficiencies. In particular, this paper studies the joint energy minimization and resource allocation in C-RAN with MCC under the time constraints of the given tasks. We first review the energy and time model of the computation and communication. Then, we formulate the joint energy minimization into a non-convex optimization with the constraints of task executing time, transmitting power, computation capacity and fronthaul data rates. This non-convex optimization is then reformulated into an equivalent convex problem based on weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE). The iterative algorithm is finally given to deal with the joint resource allocation in C-RAN with mobile cloud. Simulation results confirm that the proposed energy minimization and resource allocation solution can improve the system performance and save energy.

LAPPS: Location Aware Password Protection System

Location Aware Password Protection System (LAPPS) is designed to strengthen the security of traditional password protection systems. This is achieved by adding several layers of protection to the passwords that most traditional password protection systems generate. The current implementation looks at the Password/Pin numbers of Credit/Debit cards that are used on Automated Teller Machine (ATM),though the underlying design of the system can be used in many other scenarios. A password that is generated will be allocated to a particular user and to the ATM that is nearest to the user. LAPPS ensures the following qualities of the passwords that it generates. Location Awareness: The passwords are generated according to the users' geographical area, that they request their passwords from. So a password will only be active in just one location. Time Awareness: A password will only be valid for five minutes. The unused passwords will be discarded. Dynamic: The user has to have a new password each time he/she logs in. A password is generated to be used only once. User Oriented/Specific: The received password can only be used by the requester, and can only be used on its allocated ATM. Two Factor Authenticity: The confidential information will be secured using two-factor authentication. For extra security, a Pin generating device has been introduced. This will produce an eight digit number that the user has to supply to the mobile application, before requesting for a password. The user can obtain a pin number by inserting his/her Debit/Credit card and the fixed password that has been allocated when the user registers with the system.

Aqua Computing: Coupling Computing and Communications

The authors introduce a new vision for providing computing services for connected devices. It is based on the key concept that future computing resources will be coupled with communication resources, for enhancing user experience of the connected users, and also for optimising resources in the providers' infrastructures. Such coupling is achieved by Joint/Cooperative resource allocation algorithms, by integrating computing and communication services and by integrating hardware in networks. Such type of computing, by which computing services are not delivered independently but dependent of networking services, is named Aqua Computing. The authors see Aqua Computing as a novel approach for delivering computing resources to end devices, where computing power of the devices are enhanced automatically once they are connected to an Aqua Computing enabled network. The process of resource coupling is named computation dissolving. Then, an Aqua Computing architecture is proposed for mobile edge networks, in which computing and wireless networking resources are allocated jointly or cooperatively by a Mobile Cloud Controller, for the benefit of the end-users and/or for the benefit of the service providers. Finally, a working prototype of the system is shown and the gathered results show the performance of the Aqua Computing prototype.
