Constant Scalar Curvature Sasaki Metrics and Projective Bundles

In this paper we consider the Boothby-Wang construction over twist 1 stage 3 Bott orbifolds given in terms of the log pair $(S_{\bf n},Δ_{\bf m})$. We give explicit constant scalar curvature (CSC) Sasaki metrics either directly from CSC Kähler orbifold metrics or by using the weighted extremal approach of Apostolov and Calderbank. The Sasaki 7-manifolds (orbifolds) are finitely covered by compact simply connected manifolds (orbifolds) with the rational homology of the 2-fold connected sum of $S^2\times S^5$.

On Positivity in Sasaki Geometry

It is well known that if the dimension of the Sasaki cone is greater than one, then all Sasakian structures are either positive or indefinite. We discuss the phenomenon of type changing within a fixed Sasaki cone. Assuming henceforth that the dimension of the Sasaki cone is greater than one, there are three possibilities, either all elements are positive, all are indefinite, or both positive and indefinite Sasakian structures occur. We illustrate by examples how the type can change as we move in the Sasaki cone. If there exists a Sasakian structure in the cone whose total transverse scalar curvature is non-positive, then all elements of the Sasaki cone are indefinite. Furthermore, we prove that if the first Chern class is a torsion class or represented by a positive definite (1,1) form, then all elements of the Sasaki cone are positive.

Brieskorn Manifolds, Positive Sasakian Geometry, and Contact Topology

Using $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ and certain rational homology spheres. We then apply our result to show that on these manifolds the moduli space of classes of positive Sasakian structures has infinitely many components. We also apply our results to give lower bounds on the number of components of the moduli space of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on certain homotopy spheres. Finally a new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics of real dimension 20 on $S^5$ is exhibited.

The Sasaki Join and Admissible Kähler Constructions

We give a survey of our recent work describing a method which combines the Sasaki join construction with the admissible Kähler construction of to obtain new extremal and new constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, including Sasaki-Einstein metrics. The constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics also provide explicit solutions to the CR Yamabe problem. In this regard we give examples of the lack of uniqueness when the Yamabe invariant is positive.

The Sasaki Join, Hamiltonian 2-forms, and Constant Scalar Curvature

We describe a general procedure for constructing new Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature from old ones. Explicitly, we begin with a regular Sasaki metric of constant scalar curvature on a 2n+1-dimensional compact manifold M and construct a sequence, depending on four integer parameters, of rays of constant scalar curvature (CSC) Sasaki metrics on a compact Sasaki manifold of dimension $2n+3$. We also give examples which show that the CSC rays are often not unique on a fixed strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold or a fixed contact manifold. Moreover, it is shown that when the first Chern class of the contact bundle vanishes, there is a two dimensional subcone of Sasaki Ricci solitons in the Sasaki cone, and a unique Sasaki-Einstein metric in each of the two dimensional sub cones.

Simply Connected Manifolds with Infinitely Many Toric Contact Structures and Constant Scalar Curvature Sasaki Metrics

We study a class of simply connected manifolds in all odd dimensions greater than 3 that exhibit an infinite number of toric contact structures of Reeb type that are inequivalent as contact structures. We compute the cohomology ring of our manifolds by using the join construction for Sasaki manifolds and show that all such contact structures admit a ray of compatible Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature (CSC). Furthermore, infinitely many such structures admit at least 3 rays of constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics.

The Sasaki Join, Hamiltonian 2-forms, and Sasaki-Einstein Metrics

By combining the join construction from Sasakian geometry with the Hamiltonian 2-form construction from Kähler geometry, we recover Sasaki-Einstein metrics discovered by physicists. Our geometrical approach allows us to give an algorithm for computing the topology of these Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In particular, we explicitly compute the cohomology rings for several cases of interest and give a formula for homotopy equivalence in one particular 7-dimensional case. We also show that our construction gives at least a two dimensional cone of both Sasaki-Ricci solitons and extremal Sasaki metrics.

Extremal Sasakian Geometry on S^3-bundles over Riemann Surfaces

In this paper we study the Sasakian geometry on S^3-bundles over a Riemann surface of genus g>0 with emphasis on extremal Sasaki metrics. We prove the existence of a countably infinite number of inequivalent contact structures on the total space of such bundles that admit 2-dimensional Sasaki cones each with a Sasaki metric of constant scalar curvature (CSC). This CSC Sasaki metric is most often irregular. We further study the extremal subset in the Sasaki cone showing that if 0<g<5 it exhausts the entire cone. Examples are given where exhaustion fails.

Maximal Tori in Contactomorphism Groups

I describe a general scheme which associates conjugacy classes of tori in the contactomorphism group to transverse almost complex structures on a compact contact manifold. Moreover, to tori of Reeb type whose Lie algebra contains a Reeb vector field one can associate a Sasaki cone. Thus, for contact structures of K-contact type one obtains a configuration of Sasaki cones called a bouquet such that each Sasaki cone is associated with a conjugacy class of tori of Reeb type.

On the Equivalence Problem for Toric Contact Structures on S^3-bundles over S^2$

We study the contact equivalence problem for toric contact structures on $S^3$-bundles over $S^2$. That is, given two toric contact structures, one can ask the question: when are they equivalent as contact structures while inequivalent as toric contact structures? In general this appears to be a difficult problem. To find inequivalent toric contact structures that are contact equivalent, we show that the corresponding 3-tori belong to distinct conjugacy classes in the contactomorphism group. To show that two toric contact structures with the same first Chern class are contact inequivalent, we use Morse-Bott contact homology. We treat a subclass of contact structures which include the Sasaki-Einstein contact structures $Y^{p,q}$ studied by physicists. In this subcase we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p'q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.

Completely Integrable Contact Hamiltonian Systems and Toric Contact Structures on $S^2\times S^3$

I begin by giving a general discussion of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems in the setting of contact geometry. We then pass to the particular case of toric contact structures on the manifold $S^2\times S^3$. In particular we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem for a class of toric contact structures, $Y^{p,q}$, discovered by physicists by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p',q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.

Toric self-dual Einstein metrics as quotients

We use the quaternion Kahler reduction technique to study old and new self-dual Einstein metrics of negative scalar curvature with at least a two-dimensional isometry group, and relate the quotient construction to the hyperbolic eigenfunction Ansatz. We focus in particular on the (semi-)quaternion Kahler quotients of (semi-)quaternion Kahler hyperboloids, analysing the completeness and topology, and relating them to the self-dual Einstein Hermitian metrics of Apostolov-Gauduchon and Bryant.
