Global-in-time $H^1$-stability of L2-1$_σ$ method on general nonuniform meshes for subdiffusion equation

In this work the L2-1$_σ$ method on general nonuniform meshes is studied for the subdiffusion equation. When the time step ratio is no less than $0.475329$, a bilinear form associated with the L2-1$_σ$ fractional-derivative operator is proved to be positive semidefinite and a new global-in-time $H^1$-stability of L2-1$_σ$ schemes is then derived under simple assumptions on the initial condition and the source term. In addition, the sharp $L^2$-norm convergence is proved under the constraint that the time step ratio is no less than $0.475329$.

Stability and convergence of Strang splitting. Part I: Scalar Allen-Cahn equation

We consider a class of second-order Strang splitting methods for Allen-Cahn equations with polynomial or logarithmic nonlinearities. For the polynomial case both the linear and the nonlinear propagators are computed explicitly. We show that this type of Strang splitting scheme is unconditionally stable regardless of the time step. Moreover we establish strict energy dissipation for a judiciously modified energy which coincides with the classical energy up to $\mathcal O(τ)$ where $τ$ is the time step. For the logarithmic potential case, since the continuous-time nonlinear propagator no longer enjoys explicit analytic treatments, we employ a second order in time two-stage implicit Runge--Kutta (RK) nonlinear propagator together with an efficient Newton iterative solver. We prove a maximum principle which ensures phase separation and establish energy dissipation law under mild restrictions on the time step. These appear to be the first rigorous results on the energy dissipation of Strang-type splitting methods for Allen-Cahn equations.

Stability and convergence of Strang splitting. Part II: tensorial Allen-Cahn equations

We consider the second-order in time Strang-splitting approximation for vector-valued and matrix-valued Allen-Cahn equations. Both the linear propagator and the nonlinear propagator are computed explicitly. For the vector-valued case, we prove the maximum principle and unconditional energy dissipation for a judiciously modified energy functional. The modified energy functional is close to the classical energy up to $\mathcal O(τ)$ where $τ$ is the splitting step. For the matrix-valued case, we prove a sharp maximum principle in the matrix Frobenius norm. We show modified energy dissipation under very mild splitting step constraints. We exhibit several numerical examples to show the efficiency of the method as well as the sharpness of the results.

Energy Stable L2 Schemes for Time-Fractional Phase-Field Equations

In this article, the energy stability of two high-order L2 schemes for time-fractional phase-field equations is established. We propose a reformulation of the L2 operator and also some new properties on it. We prove the energy boundedness (by initial energy) of an L2 scalar auxiliary variable scheme for any phase-field equation and the fractional energy law of an implicit-explicit L2 Adams--Bashforth scheme for the Allen--Cahn equation. The stability analysis is based on a new Cholesky decomposition proposed recently by some of us.

How to Define Dissipation-Preserving Energy for Time-Fractional Phase-Field Equations

There exists a well defined energy for classical phase-field equations under which the dissipation law is satisfied, i.e., the energy is non-increasing with respect to time. However, it is not clear how to extend the energy definition to time-fractional phase-field equations so that the corresponding dissipation law is still satisfied. In this work, we will try to settle this problem for phase-field equations with Caputo time-fractional derivative, by defining a nonlocal energy as an averaging of the classical energy with a time-dependent weight function. As the governing equation exhibits both nonlocal and nonlinear behavior, the dissipation analysis is challenging. To deal with this, we propose a new theorem on judging the positive definiteness of a symmetric function, that is derived from a special Cholesky decomposition. Then, the nonlocal energy is proved to be dissipative under a simple restriction of the weight function. Within the same framework, the time fractional derivative of classical energy for time-fractional phase-field models can be proved to be always nonpositive.
