Heralded Generation and Detection of Entangled Microwave--Optical Photon Pairs

Quantum state transfer between microwave and optical frequencies is essential for connecting superconducting quantum circuits to coherent optical systems and extending microwave quantum networks over long distances. To build such a hybrid `quantum Internet,' an important experiment in the quantum regime is to entangle microwave and optical modes. Based on the model of a generic cavity electro-optomechanical system, we present a heralded scheme to generate entangled microwave--optical photon pairs, which can bypass the efficiency threshold for quantum channel capacity in direct transfer protocols. The parameter regime for entanglement verification is identified that is compatible with realistic experimental settings. Our scheme is feasible given the latest experimental progress on electro-optomechanics, and can be potentially generalized to various physical systems.

Sub-diffraction optical manipulation of the chargestate of nitrogen vacancy center in diamond

As a potential candidate for quantum computation and metrology, the nitrogen vacancy (NV)center in diamond presented both challenges and opportunities resulted from charge state conversion. By utilizing different lasers for the photon-induced charge state conversion, we achieved the sub-diffraction charge state manipulation. The charge state depletion (CSD) microscopy resolution was improved to 4.1 nm by optimizing the laser pulse sequences. Subsequently, the electron spin state dynamics of adjacent NV centers were selectively detected via the CSD. The experimental results demonstrated that the CSD can improve the spatial resolution of the measurement of NV centers for nanoscale sensing and quantum information.

Interference of surface plasmon polaritons from a "point" source

The interference patterns of the surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) on the metal surface from a "point" source are observed. These interference patterns come from the forward SPPs and the reflected one from the obstacles, such as straightedge, corner, and ring groove structure. Innovation to the previous works, a "point" SPPs source with diameter of 100 nm is generated at the freely chosen positions on Au/air interface using near field excitation method. Such a "point" source provides good enough coherence to generate obvious interference phenomenon. The constructive and destructive interference patterns of the SPPs agree well with the numerical caculation. This "point" SPPs source may be useful in the investigation of plasmonics for its high coherence, deterministic position and minimum requirement for the initial light source.
