Coexistence of extended flat band and Kekulé order in Li-intercalated graphene

Doping graphene near the 1/4 filling to shift the extended flat band and van Hove singularity below E$_F$ has been highly desirable. Here we report the experimental observation of an extended flat band below E$_F$ in Li-intercalated graphene. Strong electron-phonon interaction is clearly identified by notable kinks in the band dispersion. Moreover, the evolution of the band structure upon Li intercalation shows that the extended flat band and the Kekulé order emerge simultaneously. Our work provides opportunities for investigating flat band related instabilities and its interplay with the Kekulé order

Population inversion and Dirac fermion cooling in 3D Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$

Revealing the ultrafast dynamics of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions upon photoexcitation is critical for both fundamental science and device applications. So far, how the cooling of 3D Dirac fermions differs from that of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions and whether there is population inversion are fundamental questions that remain to be answered. Here we reveal the ultrafast dynamics of Dirac fermions in a model 3D Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ by ultrafast time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES) with a tunable probe photon energy from 5.3 - 6.9 eV. The energy- and momentum-resolved relaxation rate shows a linear dependence on the energy, suggesting Dirac fermion cooling through intraband relaxation. Moreover, a population inversion is reported based on the observation of accumulated photoexcited carriers in the conduction band with a lifetime of $τ_n$ = 3.0 ps. Our work provides direct experimental evidence for a long-lived population inversion in a 3D Dirac semimetal, which is in contrast to 2D graphene where the interband relaxation occurs on a much faster timescale.

Ultrafast time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with widely tunable probe photon energy of 5.3-7.0 eV for investigating dynamics of three-dimensional materials

Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES) is a powerful technique for capturing the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers and revealing photo-induced phase transitions in quantum materials. However, the lack of widely tunable probe photon energy, which is critical for accessing the dispersions at different out-of-plane momentum $k_z$ in TrARPES measurements, has hindered the ultrafast dynamics investigation of 3D quantum materials such as Dirac or Weyl semimetals. Here we report the development of a TrARPES system with a highly tunable probe photon energy from 5.3 to 7.0 eV. The tunable probe photon energy is generated by the fourth harmonic generation of a tunable wavelength femtosecond laser source by combining a $β$-BaB$_2$O$_4$ (BBO) crystal and a KBe$_2$BO$_3$F$_2$ (KBBF) crystal. High energy resolution of 29 - 48 meV and time resolution of 280 - 320 fs are demonstrated on 3D topological materials ZrTe$_5$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$. Our work opens up new opportunities for exploring ultrafast dynamics in 3D quantum materials.

Interlayer quantum transport in Dirac semimetal BaGa$_2$

Quantum limit is quite easy to achieve once the band crossing exists exactly at the Fermi level ($E_F$) in topological semimetals. In multilayered Dirac fermion system, the density of Dirac fermions on the zeroth Landau levels (LLs) increases in proportion to the magnetic field, resulting in intriguing angle- and field-dependent interlayer tunneling conductivity near the quantum limit. BaGa$_2$ is an example of multilayered Dirac semimetal with anisotropic Dirac cone close to $E_F$, providing a good platform to study its interlayer transport properties. In this paper, we report the negative interlayer magnetoresistance (NIMR, I//c and B//c) induced by the tunneling of Dirac fermions on the zeroth LLs of neighbouring Ga layers in BaGa$_2$. When the field deviates from the c-axis, the interlayer resistivity $ρ_{zz}(θ)$ increases and finally results in a peak with the field perpendicular to the c-axis. These unusual interlayer transport properties (NIMR and resistivity peak with B$\perp$c) are observed together for the first time in Dirac semimetal under ambient pressure and are well explained by the model of tunneling between Dirac fermions in the quantum limit.

Raman signatures of inversion symmetry breaking and structural phase transition in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ is an important candidate for realizing the newly predicted type-IIWeyl fermions, for which the breaking of the inversion symmetry is a prerequisite. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in the low temperature phase of MoTe$_2$ by systematic Raman experiments and first principles calculations. We identify five lattice vibrational modes which are Raman active only in noncentrosymmetric structure at low temperature. A hysteresis is also observed in the peak intensity of inversion symmetry activated Raman modes, confirming a temperature induced structural phase transition with a concomitant change in the inversion symmetry. Our results provide definitive evidence for the low temperature noncentrosymmetric T$_d$ phase from vibrational spectroscopy, and suggest MoTe$_2$ as an ideal candidate for investigating the temperature induced topological phase transition.
