Topological superconductivity in a topological insulator

Topological superconductivity is an exotic quantum phenomenon with coupled nontrivial topological order and superconductivity together. A direct idea for producing topological superconductors is to create superconductivity based on the well recognized topological insulators. The topological insulating states in highly efficient thermoelectric materials Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and their alloy Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3-x}$Se$_{x}$ have been established from angle-resolved photoemission and transport experiments. Superconductivity was also observed based on these popular topological insulators by the application of pressure chemical dopant and heterostructures. However, the experiments mainly focusing on Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$ doped by metals have not provided the consistent evidence to support the topological superconductivity. Here we carry out a systematic high-pressure study on a topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2.7}$Se$_{0.3}$ to provide the convincing evidence for the expected topological superconductivity. Four phases with different structures are found upon compression. The topological surface state is identified in the entire initial phase, while superconductivity is found to coexist with such a state of the compressed material after its passing the electronic topological transition, followed by three other superconducting phases without topological character. For these superconducting phases, we observe that the upper critical field follows with the temperature in the critical exponent ${2/3}$ for the first one with the topological surface state and $1$ for the left. These observations support the realization of the topological superconductivity in the initial phase according to the theoretically proposed critical field measure. This work also points out a big pool and new direction for finding topological superconductors from topological thermoelectric materials.

Quasicrystalline Chern Insulators

Chern insulator or quantum anomalous Hall state is a topological state with integer Hall conductivity but in absence of Landau level. It had been well established on various two-dimensional lattices with periodic structure. Here, we report similar Chern insulators can also be realized on the quasicrystal with $5$-fold rotational symmetry. Providing the staggered flux through plaquettes, we propose two types of quasicrystalline Chern insulators. Their topological characterizations are well identified by the robustness of edge states, non-zero real-space Chern number, and quantized conductance. We further find the failure of integer conductivity but with quantized Chern number at some special energies. Our study therefore provide a new opportunity to searching topological materials in aperiodic system.

Wave Functions for Fractional Chern Insulators on Disk Geometry

Recently, fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), also called fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, have been theoretically established in lattice systems with topological flat bands. These systems exhibit similar fractionalization phenomena as the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems. Using the mapping relationship between the FQH states and the FCI/FQAH states, we construct the many-body wave functions of the fermionic FCI/FQAH states on the disk geometry with the aid of the generalized Pauli principle (GPP) and the Jack polynomials. Compared with the ground state by exact diagonalization method, the wave-function overlap is higher than $0.97$ even when the Hilbert space dimension is as large as $3\times10^6$. We also use the GPP and the Jack polynomials to construct edge excitations for the ferminoic FCI/FQAH states. The quasi-degeneracy sequences of fermionic FCI/FQAH systems reproduce the prediction of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory, complementing the exact diagonalization results with larger lattice sizes and more particles.

Edge Excitations in Fractional Chern Insulators

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated the realization of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states (also called fractional Chern insulators) in topological flat band lattice models without an external magnetic field. Such newly proposed lattice systems play a vital role to obtain a large class of fractional topological phases. Here we report the exact numerical studies of edge excitations for such systems in a disk geometry loaded with hard-core bosons, which will serve as a more viable experimental probe for such topologically ordered states. We find convincing numerical evidence of a series of edge excitations characterized by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory for the bosonic fractional Chern insulators in both the honeycomb disk Haldane model and the kagomé-lattice disk model. We further verify these current-carrying chiral edge states by inserting a central flux to test their compressibility.

Emergent topological and half semimetallic Dirac Fermions at oxide interfaces

It is highly desirable to combine recent advances in the topological quantum phases with technologically relevant materials. Chromium dioxide (CrO2) is a half-metallic material, widely used in high-end data storage applications. Using first principles calculations, we show via interfacial orbital design that a novel class of half semi-metallic Dirac electronic phase emerges at the interface CrO2 with TiO2 in both thin film and superlattice configurations, with four spin-polarized Dirac points in momentum-space (k-space) band structure. When the spin and orbital degrees of freedom are allowed to couple, the CrO2/TiO2 superlattice becomes a Chern insulator without external fields or additional doping. With topological gaps equivalent to 43 Kelvin and a Chern number 2, the ensuing quantization of Hall conductance to 2e^2/h will enable potential development of these highly industrialized oxides for applications in topologically high fidelity data storage and energy-efficient electronic and spintronic devices.

Resonance, Fermi surface topology, and Superconductivity in Cuprates

The resonance, a collective boson mode, was usually thought to be a possible glue of superconductivity. We argue that it is rather a natural product of the \emph{d}-wave pairing and the Fermi surface topology. A universal scaling $E_{res}/2Δ^{H}_{S}\sim 1.0$ ($Δ_{S}^{H}$ the magnitude of superconducting gap at hot spot) is proposed for cuprates, irrespective of the hole-/electron-doping, low-/high-energy resonance, monotonic/nonmonotonic \emph{d}-wave paring, and the parameters selected. We reveal that there may exist two resonance peaks in the electron-doped cuprates. The low- and high- energy resonance, originated from the contributions of the different intra-band component, is intimately associated with the Fermi surface topology. By analyzing the data of inelastic neutron scattering, we conclude the nonmonotonic \emph{d}-wave superconducting pairing symmetry in the electron-doped cuprates, which is still an open question

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands with Chern Number Two

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C=1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C=2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $ν=1/3$ filling characterized by three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap in quasihole excitation spectrum. We also observe numerical evidence of a robust fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect for spinless fermions at the $ν=1/5$ filling with short-range interactions.

Non-Abelian Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

Inspired by recent theoretical discovery of robust fractional topological phases without a magnetic field, we search for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect (NA-QHE) in lattice models with topological flat bands (TFBs). Through extensive numerical studies on the Haldane model with three-body hard-core bosons loaded into a TFB, we find convincing numerical evidence of a stable $ν=1$ bosonic NA-QHE, with the characteristic three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a quantized Chern number, and a robust spectrum gap. Moreover, the spectrum for two-quasihole states also shows a finite energy gap, with the number of states in the lower energy sector satisfying the same counting rule as the Moore-Read Pfaffian state.

Transversal Propagation Behaviors of Helical Edge States In a QSH System

The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $λ$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size effect. Real materials are compared in the phase diagram, which explicitly demonstrates their differences. We also propose an intuitive way to search the special edge states in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect of Hard-Core Bosons in Topological Flat Bands

Recent proposals of topological flat band (TFB) models have provided a new route to realize the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) without Landau levels. We study hard-core bosons with short-range interactions in two representative TFB models, one of which is the well known Haldane model (but with different parameters). We demonstrate that FQHE states emerge with signatures of even number of quasi-degenerate ground states on a torus and a robust spectrum gap separating these states from higher energy spectrum. We also establish quantum phase diagrams for the filling factor 1/2 and illustrate quantum phase transitions to other competing symmetry-breaking phases.

Manipulating the fully spin-polarized edge currents in graphene ribbon

Electron fully spin-polarized edge states in graphene emerged at the interfaces of a nonuniform magnetic field are studied numerically in a tight-binding model, with both the orbital and Zeeman-splitting effects of magnetic field considered. We show that the fully spin-polarized currents can be manipulated by a gate voltage. In order to make use of the fully spin-polarized currents in the spin related transport, a three-terminal experiment is designed and expected to export the fully spin-polarized currents. This may have important applications in spin based nanodevices.

Quantized multi-terminal resistances in ferromagnetic graphene p-n junctions

The quantum Hall and longitudinal resistances in multi-terminal ferromagnetic graphene p-n junctions under a perpendicular magnetic field are investigated. In the Hall measurements, the transverse contacts are assumed to be located at p-n interface to avoid the mixing of edge states at the interface and the resulting quantized resistances are then topologically protected. According to the charge carrier type, the resistances in four-terminal p-n junction can be naturally divided into nine different regimes. The symmetric Hall and longitudinal resistances are observed, with lots of new robust quantum plateaus revealed due to the competition between spin splitting and local potentials.

Zigzag graphene nanoribbons without inversion symmetry

Graphene on a substrate will suffer an inversion-symmetry-breaking (ISB) lattice potential. Taking electron-electron interaction into account, we study in this paper the possibility of half-metallicity and noncollinear (NC) magnetic phase for graphene zigzag nanoribbons without inversion symmetry. At half-filling it is found that half-metallic(HM) state can be achieved at an intermediate value of the ISB potential due to its competition with the electron-electron interaction. Away from half-filling, the phase diagrams of doping versus ISB potential for different ribbon width are given, where the regimes for the HM states and NC magnetic state are clearly indicated and discussed. For ribbons with perfect edges, we predict a topological transition between two HM states with different magnetic structures, which is accompanied by an abrupt transition of electrical conductance along the ribbon from $2e^2/h$ to $e^2/h$.

Tunable striped-patterns by lattice anisotropy and magnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors

The pattern transition induced by lattice anisotropy (LA) and magnetic impurities is computationally observed in near-optimally doped d-wave superconductors (DSCs). For the single impurity case, a transition from the checkerboard to stripe pattern can be induced even with a very weak LA. Moreover, the modulation period of eight lattice constants (8$a$) in the spin order coincides with neutron scattering data. For the two-impurity case, an orientation transition from the longitudinal impurity-pinned stripe into the transverse pattern is observed when the LA ratio reaches some critical value. At the critical point, it is found that the structures around magnetic impurities could restore checkerboard patterns. These results indicate that the formation of stripes in DSCs might induced by various effects, and could be tunable experimentally.

Edge States and Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene under a Modulated Magnetic Field

Graphene properties can be manipulated by a periodic potential. Based on the tight-binding model, we study graphene under a one-dimensional (1D) modulated magnetic field which contains both a uniform and a staggered component. New chiral current-carrying edge states are generated at the interfaces where the staggered component changes direction. These edge states lead to an unusual integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene, which can be observed experimentally by a standard four-terminal Hall measurement. When Zeeman spin splitting is considered, a novel state is predicted where the electron edge currents with opposite polarization propagate in the opposite directions at one sample boundary, whereas propagate in the same directions at the other sample boundary.

Induced chiral Dirac fermions in graphene by a periodically modulated magnetic field

The effect of a modulated magnetic field on the electronic structure of neutral graphene is examined in this paper. It is found that application of a small staggered modulated magnetic field does not destroy the Dirac-cone structure of graphene and so preserves its 4-fold zero-energy degeneracy. The original Dirac points (DPs) are just shifted to other positions in k space. By varying the staggered field gradually, new DPs with exactly the same electron-hole crossing energy as that of the original DPs, are generated, and both the new and original DPs are moving continuously. Once two DPs are shifted to the same position, they annihilate each other and vanish. The process of generation and evolution of these DPs with the staggered field is found to have a very interesting patten, which is examined carefully. Generally, there exists a corresponding branch of anisotropic massless fermions for each pair of DPs, resulting in that each Landau level (LL) is still 4-fold degenerate except the zeroth LL which has a robust $4n_t$-fold degeneracy with nt the number of pairs of DPs. As a result, the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ shows a step of size $4n_te^2/h$ across zero energy.

Magnetic Flux Tuning of Spin Chirality in Mott Insulators with Ring Exchanges

A manifestation of the many-body Aharonov-Bohm effect in the magnetic-flux-tuned Mott insulators with three-spin and four-spin ring exchanges, presents as an effective tool to manipulate the ground-state spin chirality, such as, tune the magnitude continuously, switch an abrupt jump, or even reverse its sign. Such a mechanism is demonstrated explicitly in both quasi-one-dimensional ladders and two-dimensional lattices with triangles as elementary plaquettes.

Topological-Fermi-Liquid to Quantum-Hall-Liquid Transitions: $p$-Band and $d$-Band Fermions in a Magnetic Field

We find that in a multi-orbital system with intraorbital and interorbital hopping integrals, the Hall conductance exhibits various topological quantum phase transitions (QPTs) induced by on-site orbital polarization: integer quantum Hall (IQH) plateau transitions, and topological Fermi liquid to IQH transitions. Such topological QPTs are demonstrated in two systems: a $p$-band spinless fermionic system realizable with ultracold atoms in optical lattice, and a $d$-band spinful fermionic system closely related to giant orbital Hall effects in transition metals and their compounds.
