Unambiguously Testing Positivity at Lepton Colliders

The diphoton channel at lepton colliders, $e^+e^- (μ^+μ^-) \to γγ$, has a remarkable feature that the leading new physics contribution comes only from dimension-eight operators. This contribution is subject to a set of positivity bounds, derived from the fundamental principles of Quantum Field Theory, such as unitarity, locality, analyticity and Lorentz invariance. These positivity bounds are thus applicable to the most direct observable -- the diphoton cross section. This unique feature provides a clear, robust, and unambiguous test of these principles. We estimate the capability of various future lepton colliders in probing the dimension-eight operators and testing the positivity bounds in this channel. We show that positivity bounds can lift certain flat directions among the effective operators and significantly change the perspectives of a global analysis. We also discuss the positivity bounds of the $Zγ/ZZ$ processes which are related to the $γγ$ ones, but are more complicated due to the massive $Z$ boson.

SMEFTs living on the edge: determining the UV theories from positivity and extremality

We study the "inverse problem" in the context of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT): how and to what extend can one reconstruct the UV theory, given the measured values of the operator coefficients in the IR? The main obstacle of this problem is the degeneracies in the space of coefficients: a given SMEFT truncated at a finite dimension can be mapped to infinitely many UV theories. We discuss these degeneracies at the dimension-8 level, and show that positivity bounds play a crucial role in the inverse problem. In particular, the degeneracies either vanish or become significantly limited for SMEFTs that live on or close to the positivity bounds. The UV particles of these SMEFTs, and their properties such as spin, charge, other quantum numbers, and interactions with the SM particles, can often be uniquely determined, assuming dimension-8 coefficients are measured. The allowed region for SMEFTs, which forms a convex cone, can be systematically constructed by enumerating its generators. We show that a geometric notion, extremality, conveniently connects the positivity problem with the inverse problem. We discuss the implications of a SMEFT living on an extremal ray, on a $k$-face, and on the vertex of the positive cone. We also show that the information of the dimension-8 coefficients can be used to set exclusion limits on all individual UV states that interact with the SM, independent of specific model assumptions. Our results indicate that the dimension-8 operators encode much more information about the UV than one would naively expect, which can be used to reverse engineer the UV physics from the SMEFT.

Elastic positivity vs extremal positivity bounds in SMEFT: a case study in transversal electroweak gauge-boson scatterings

The positivity bounds, derived from the axiomatic principles of quantum field theory (QFT), constrain the signs of Wilson coefficients and their linear combinations in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The precise determination of these bounds, however, can become increasingly difficult as more and more SM modes and operators are taken into account. We study two approaches that aim at obtaining the full set of bounds for a given set of SM fields: 1) the traditional elastic positivity approach, which exploits the elastic scattering amplitudes of states with arbitrarily superposed helicities as well as other quantum numbers, and 2) the newly proposed extremal positivity approach, which constructs the allowed coefficient space directly by using the extremal representation of convex cones. Considering the electroweak gauge-bosons as an example, we demonstrate how the best analytical and numerical positivity bounds can be obtained in several ways. We further compare the constraining power and the efficiency of various approaches, as well as their applicability to more complex problems. While the new extremal approach is more constraining by construction, we also find that it is analytically easier to use, numerically much faster than the elastic approach, and much more applicable when more SM particle states and operators are taken into account. As a byproduct, we provide the best positivity bounds on the transversal quartic-gauge-boson couplings, required by the axiomatic principles of QFT, and show that they exclude $\approx 99.3\%$ of the parameter space currently being searched at the LHC.

MUZZ: Thread-aware Grey-box Fuzzing for Effective Bug Hunting in Multithreaded Programs

Grey-box fuzz testing has revealed thousands of vulnerabilities in real-world software owing to its lightweight instrumentation, fast coverage feedback, and dynamic adjusting strategies. However, directly applying grey-box fuzzing to input-dependent multithreaded programs can be extremely inefficient. In practice, multithreading-relevant bugs are usually buried in sophisticated program flows. Meanwhile, the existing grey-box fuzzing techniques do not stress thread-interleavings which affect execution states in multithreaded programs. Therefore, mainstream grey-box fuzzers cannot effectively test problematic segments in multithreaded programs despite they might obtain high code coverage statistics. To this end, we propose MUZZ, a new grey-box fuzzing technique that hunts for bugs in multithreaded programs. MUZZ owns three novel thread-aware instrumentations, namely coverage-oriented instrumentation, thread-context instrumentation, and schedule-intervention instrumentation. During fuzzing, these instrumentations engender runtime feedback to stress execution states caused by thread interleavings. By leveraging the feedback in the dynamic seed selection and execution strategies, MUZZ preserves more valuable seeds that expose bugs in a multithreading context. We evaluate MUZZ on 12 real-world software programs. Experiments show that MUZZ outperforms AFL in both multithreading-relevant seed generation and concurrency-vulnerability detection. Further, by replaying the target programs against the generated seeds, MUZZ also reveals more concurrency-bugs (e.g., data-races, thread-leaks) than AFL. In total, MUZZ detected 8 new concurrency-vulnerabilities and 19 new concurrency-bugs. At the time of writing, 4 CVE IDs have been assigned to the reported issues.

A 750 GeV Messenger of Dark Conformal Symmetry Breaking

The tentative hints for a diphoton resonance at a mass of $\sim 750$ GeV from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC may be interpreted as first contact with a "dark" sector with a spontaneously broken conformal symmetry. The implied TeV scale of the dark sector may be motivated by the interaction strength required to accommodate a viable thermal relic dark matter (DM) candidate. We model the conformal dynamics using a Randall-Sundrum type 5D geometry whose IR boundary is identified with the dynamics of the composite dark sector, while the Standard Model (SM) matter content resides on the UV boundary, corresponding to "elementary" fields. We allow the gauge fields to reside in the 5D bulk, which can be minimally chosen to be $SU(3)_c\times U(1)_Y$. The "dark" radion is identified as the putative 750 GeV resonance. Heavy vector-like fermions, often invoked to explain the diphoton excess, are not explicitly present in our model and are not predicted to appear in the spectrum of TeV scale states. Our minimal setup favors scalar DM of $\mathcal{O}(\text{TeV})$ mass. A generic expectation in this scenario, suggested by DM considerations, is the appearance of vector bosons at $\sim$ few TeV, corresponding to the gluon and hypercharge Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes that couple to UV boundary states with strengths that are suppressed uniformly compared to their SM values. Our analysis suggests that these KK modes could be within the reach of the LHC in the coming years.

Exo-Higgs at 750 GeV and Genesis of Baryons

We propose that the diphoton excess at 750 GeV reported by ATLAS and CMS is due to the decay of an ${\it exo-Higgs}$ scalar $η$ associated with the breaking of a new $SU(2)_e$ symmetry, dubbed ${\it exo-spin}$. New fermions, ${\it exo-quarks}$ and ${\it exo-leptons}$, get TeV-scale masses through Yukawa couplings with $η$ and generate its couplings to gluons and photons at 1-loop. The matter content of our model yields a $B-L$ anomaly under $SU(2)_e$, whose breaking we assume entails a first order phase transition. A non-trivial $B-L$ asymmetry may therefore be generated in the early universe, potentially providing a baryogenesis mechanism through the Standard Model (SM) sphaleron processes. The spontaneous breaking of $SU(2)_e$ can in principle directly lead to electroweak symmetry breaking, thereby accounting for the proximity of the mass scales of the SM Higgs and the exo-Higgs. Our model can be distinguished from those comprising a singlet scalar and vector fermions by the discovery of TeV scale exo-vector bosons, corresponding to the broken $SU(2)_e$ generators, at the LHC.

Higgs production in association with a top-antitop pair in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at NLO in QCD

We present the results of the computation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production cross section of a Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop pair at the LHC, including the three relevant dimension-six operators ($O_{t φ}, O_{φG}, O_{tG}$) of the standard model effective field theory. These operators also contribute to the production of Higgs bosons in loop-induced processes at the LHC, such as inclusive Higgs, $Hj$ and $HH$ production, and modify the Higgs decay branching ratios for which we also provide predictions. We perform a detailed study of the cross sections and their uncertainties at the total as well as differential level and of the structure of the effective field theory at NLO including renormalisation group effects. Finally, we show how the combination of information coming from measurements of these production processes will allow to constrain the three operators at the current and future LHC runs. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the accuracy and precision of the deviations expected from higher-dimensional operators in the SM in both the top-quark and the Higgs-boson sectors and provide a necessary ingredient for performing a global EFT fit to the LHC data at NLO accuracy.

Implications of a Light "Dark Higgs" Solution to the $g_μ-2$ Discrepancy

A light scalar $ϕ$ with mass $\lesssim 1$ GeV and muonic coupling $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$ would explain the 3.5 $σ$ discrepancy between the Standard Model (SM) muon $g-2$ prediction and experiment. Such a scalar can be associated with a light remnant of the Higgs mechanism in the "dark" sector. We suggest $ϕ\to l^+l^-$ bump hunting in $μ\to eν\barνϕ$, $μ^-p\toν_μnϕ$ (muon capture), and $K^\pm\to μ^\pmνϕ$ decays as direct probes of this scenario. In a general setup, a potentially observable muon electric dipole moment $\lesssim 10^{-23}\ e \cdot\textrm{cm}$ and lepton flavor violating decays $τ\toμ(e) ϕ$ or $μ\to e ϕ$ can also arise. Depending on parameters, a deviation in BR($H\toμ^+μ^-$) from SM expectations, due to Higgs coupling misalignment, can result. We illustrate how the requisite interactions can be mediated by weak scale vector-like leptons that typically lie within the reach of future LHC measurements.

Probing top quark neutral couplings in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at NLO QCD

Top quark pair production in association with a $Z$-boson or a photon at the LHC directly probes neutral top-quark couplings. We present predictions for these two processes in the Standard Model (SM) Effective Field Theory (EFT) at next-to-leading (NLO) order in QCD. We include the full set of CP-even dimension-six operators that enter the top-quark interactions with the SM gauge bosons. For comparison, we also present predictions in the SMEFT for top loop-induced $HZ$ production at the LHC and for $t\bar{t}$ production at the ILC at NLO in QCD. Results for total cross sections and differential distributions are obtained and uncertainties coming from missing higher orders in the strong coupling and in the EFT expansions are discussed. NLO results matched to the parton shower are available, allowing for event generation to be directly employed in an experimental analyses. Our framework provides a solid basis for the interpretation of current and future measurements in the SMEFT, with improved accuracy and precision.

Single Top Production at Next-to-Leading Order in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

Single top production processes at hadron colliders provide information on the relation between the top quark and the electroweak sector of the standard model. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the three main production channels: $t$-channel, $s$-channel and $tW$ associated production, in the standard model including operators up to dimension-six. The calculation can be matched to parton shower programs and can therefore be directly used in experimental analyses. The QCD corrections are found to significantly impact the extraction of the current limits on the operators, because both of an improved accuracy and a better precision of the theoretical predictions. In addition, the distributions of some of the key discriminating observables are modified in a nontrivial way, which could change the interpretation of measurements in terms of UV complete models.

A global approach to top-quark flavor-changing interactions

We adopt a fully gauge-invariant effective-field-theory approach for parametrizing top-quark flavor-changing-neutral-current interactions. It allows for a global interpretation of experimental constraints (or measurements) and the systematic treatment of higher-order quantum corrections. We discuss some recent results obtained at next-to-leading-order accuracy in QCD and perform, at that order, a first global analysis of a subset of the available experimental limits in terms of effective operator coefficients. We encourage experimental collaborations to adopt this approach and extend the analysis by using all information they have prime access to.

Automatic computations at next-to-leading order in QCD for top-quark flavor-changing neutral processes

Computations at next-to-leading order in the Standard Model offer new technical challenges in presence of higher dimensional operators. We introduce a framework that, starting from the top-quark effective field theory at dimension six, allows to make predictions for cross sections as well as distributions in a fully automatic way. As an application, we present the first complete results at NLO in QCD for flavor changing neutral interactions including parton shower effects, for $tZ$, $th$, $tγ$ associated production at the LHC.

Higher-Order QCD Predictions for Dark Matter Production in Mono-$Z$ Searches at the LHC

We present theoretical predictions for mono-$Z$ production in the search for dark matter in Run-II at the LHC, including next-to-leading order QCD corrections and parton-shower effects. We consider generic simplified models with vector and scalar $s$-channel mediators. The calculation is performed by implementing the simplified models in the FeynRules/MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework, which allows us to include higher-order QCD corrections and parton-shower effects in an automated way. We find that these corrections are sizeable and help to reduce the theoretical uncertainties. We also investigate the discovery potential in several benchmark scenarios in the 13 TeV run at the LHC.

Probing top-quark chromomagnetic dipole moment at next-to-leading order in QCD

We present predictions at NLO accuracy in QCD for top-quark pair production induced by an anomalous chromomagnetic dipole moment of the top quark. Our results are obtained for total as well as fully differential cross sections, including matching to parton shower simulations. This process is expected to provide the most stringent direct limits on top-quark chromomagnetic dipole moment. We find that NLO corrections increase the contribution from the dipole moment by about 50\% at the LHC, and significantly reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence. Using the NLO prediction, we update the current limit from the Tevatron and the LHC measurements. Apart from total cross section, we also study other observables relevant for LHC phenomenology.

Effective approach to top-quark decay and FCNC processes at NLO accuracy

The top quark is expected to be a probe to new physics beyond the standard model. Thanks to the large number of top quarks produced at the Tevatron and the LHC, various properties of the top quark can now be measured accurately. An effective field theory allows us to study the new physics effects in a model-independent way, and to this end accurate theoretical predictions are required. In this talk we will discuss some recent results on top-quark decay processes as well as flavor-changing processes, based on the effective field theory approach.

Effective field theory approach to top-quark decay at next-to-leading order in QCD

We present analytical results for top-quark decay processes, in an effective field theory beyond the Standard Model, at next-to-leading order in QCD. We parametrize new physics effects using dimension-six operators, and consider all operators that give rise to non-standard interactions of the top quark. We investigate both the flavor-conserving and flavor-changing decay modes, including their two-body and three-body semi-leptonic final states. The QCD mixing among relevant operators are also taken into account. These results provide all information needed for a complete model-independent study of top-quark decay at next-to-leading order accuracy, paving the way to global analyses for new physics effects in an effective field theory approach.

Effective Field Theory Beyond the Standard Model

We review the effective field theory approach to physics beyond the Standard Model using dimension-six operators. Topics include the choice of operator basis, electroweak boson pair production, precision electroweak physics (including one-loop contributions), and Higgs physics. By measuring the coefficients of dimension-six operators with good accuracy, we can hope to infer some or all of the features of the theory that lies beyond the Standard Model.

Constraints on Electroweak Effective Operators at One Loop

We derive bounds on nine dimension-six operators involving electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs boson from precision electroweak data. Four of these operators contribute at tree level, and five contribute only at one loop. Using the full power of effective field theory, we show that the bounds on the five loop-level operators are much weaker than previously claimed, and thus much weaker than bounds from tree-level processes at high-energy colliders.

Effective Field Theory of Precision Electroweak Physics at One Loop

The one loop effects of two dimension-six operators on gauge boson self energies are computed within an effective field theory framework. These self energies are translated into effects on precision electroweak observables, and bounds are obtained on the operator coefficients. The effective field theory framework allows for the divergences that arise in the loop calculations to be properly handled, and for unambiguous bounds on the coefficients to be obtained. We find that the coefficients are only weakly bounded, in contrast to previous calculations that obtained much stronger bounds. We argue that the results of these previous calculations are specious.

Electroweak Effective Operators and Higgs Physics

We derive bounds from oblique parameters on the dimension-6 operators of an effective field theory of electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs doublet. The loop- induced contributions to the S, T, and U oblique parameters are sensitive to these contributions and we pay particular attention to the role of renormalization when computing loop corrections in the effective theory. Limits on the coefficients of the effective theory from loop contributions to oblique parameters yield complementary information to direct Higgs production measurements.

Top-quark decay into Higgs boson and a light quark at next-to-leading order in QCD

Neutral flavor-changing transitions are hugely suppressed in the Standard Model and therefore they are very sensitive to new physics. We consider the decay rate of t->u_i h where u_i=u,c using an effective field theory approach. We perform the calculation at NLO in QCD including the relevant dimension-six operators. We find that at NLO the contribution from the flavor-changing chromomagnetic operator is as important as the standard QCD correction to the flavor-changing Yukawa coupling. In addition to improving the accuracy of the theoretical predictions, the NLO calculation provides information on the operator mixing under the renormalization group.

Constraints on Non-standard Top Quark Couplings

We study non-standard top quark couplings in the effective field theory approach. All nine dimension-six operators that generate anomalous couplings between the electroweak gauge bosons and the third-generation quarks are included. We calculate their contributions at tree level and one loop to all major precision electroweak observables. The calculations are compared with data to obtain constraints on eight of these operators.

Effective field theory approach to the Higgs lineshape

The phenomenology of unstable particles, including searches and exclusion limits at the LHC, depends significantly on its lineshape. When the width of the resonance is large with respect to its mass, off-shell effects become relevant and the very same definition of width becomes non trivial. Taking a heavy Higgs boson as an example, we propose a new formulation to describe the lineshape via an effective field theory approach. Our method leads to amplitudes that are gauge invariant, respect unitarity and can appropriately describe the lineshape of broad resonances. The application of the method to the following relevant processes for the LHC phenomenology have been considered: gluon fusion, vector boson scattering and $t\bar{t}$ production via weak boson fusion.

Effective Field Theory: A Modern Approach to Anomalous Couplings

We advocate an effective field theory approach to anomalous couplings. The effective field theory approach is the natural way to extend the standard model such that the gauge symmetries are respected. It is general enough to capture any physics beyond the standard model, yet also provides guidance as to the most likely place to see the effects of new physics. The effective field theory approach also clarifies that one need not be concerned with the violation of unitarity in scattering processes at high energy. We apply these ideas to pair production of electroweak vector bosons.

Effective Field Theory for Nonstandard Top Quark Couplings

We present an effective-field-theory calculation of the effect of a dimension-six operator involving the top quark on precision electroweak data via a top-quark loop. We demonstrate the renormalizability, in the modern sense, of the effective field theory. We use the oblique parameter U to bound the coefficient of the operator, and compare with the bound derived from top-quark decay.

Effective-Field-Theory Approach to Top-Quark Production and Decay

We discuss new physics in top-quark interactions, using an effective field theory approach. We consider top-quark decay, single top production, and top-quark pair production. We identify 15 dimension-six operators that contribute to these processes, and we compute the deviation from the Standard Model induced by these operators. The results provide a systematic way of searching for (or obtaining bounds on) physics beyond the Standard Model.

Higgs Decay to Two Photons

The amplitude for Higgs decay to two photons is calculated in renormalizable and unitary gauges using dimensional regularization at intermediate steps. The result is finite, gauge independent, and in agreement with previously published results. The large Higgs mass limit is examined using the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem as a check on the use of dimensional regularization and to explain the absence of decoupling.
