Sheaf stable pairs on projective surfaces and birational geometry

We study moduli space of higher rank marginally stable pairs (E,s:= (s_1,..., s_r)) consisting of torsion free coherent sheaf E of rank r and r sections (s_1,..., s_r) on a smooth projective surface. Having fixed the Chern character of E, the resulting moduli space is isomorphic to some subscheme of the Quot-scheme parametrising quotient sheaves of appropriate Chern character. We establish a connection between moduli space of higher rank stable pairs and stable minimal models induced by the sheaf E and sections s_i and the relative lc model of base surface, and use birational geometry of minimal models to analyse in detail the components of the fibre of the Hilbert-Chow morphism from the moduli space to the Hilbert scheme of effective Cartier divisors on the base surface.

Bounding non-rationality of divisors on 3-fold Fano fibrations

In this paper we investigate non-rationality of divisors on 3-fold log Fano fibrations $(X,B)\to Z$ under mild conditions. We show that if $D$ is a component of $B$ with coefficient $\ge t>0$ which is contracted to a point on $Z$, then $D$ is birational to $\mathbb{P}^1\times C$ where $C$ is a smooth projective curve with gonality bounded depending only on $t$. Moreover, if $t>\frac{1}{2}$, then genus of $C$ is bounded depending only on $t$.

On connectedness of non-klt loci of singularities of pairs

We study the non-klt locus of singularities of pairs. We show that given a pair $(X,B)$ and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ with connected fibres such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over $Z$, the non-klt locus of $(X,B)$ has at most two connected components near each fibre of $X\to Z$. This was conjectured by Hacon and Han. In a different direction we answer a question of Mark Gross on connectedness of the non-klt loci of certain pairs. This is motivated by constructions in Mirror Symmetry.

Variations of generalised pairs

In this paper we investigate various properties of generalised pairs in families, especially boundedness of several kinds. We show that many statements for usual pairs do not hold for generalised pairs. In particular, we construct an unexpected counter-example to boundedness of generalised lc models with fixed appropriate invariants. We also show that the DCC of Iitaka volumes and existence of nef reduction maps fail in families of generalised pairs. In a positive direction we show boundedness of bases of log Calabi-Yau fibrations with their induced generalised pair structure under natural assumptions. Roughly speaking we prove this boundedness for fibrations whose general fibres belong to a bounded family and whose Iitaka volume is fixed.

Existence of flips and minimal models for 3-folds in char p

We will prove the following results for $3$-fold pairs $(X,B)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>5$: log flips exist for $\Q$-factorial dlt pairs $(X,B)$; log minimal models exist for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ with pseudo-effective $K_X+B$; the log canonical ring $R(K_X+B)$ is finitely generated for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ when $K_X+B$ is a big $\Q$-divisor; semi-ampleness holds for a nef and big $\Q$-divisor $D$ if $D-(K_X+B)$ is nef and big and $(X,B)$ is projective klt; $\Q$-factorial dlt models exist for lc pairs $(X,B)$; terminal models exist for klt pairs $(X,B)$; ACC holds for lc thresholds; etc.

On log minimal models and Zariski decompositions II

We continue our study of the relation between log minimal models and various types of Zariski decompositions. Let $(X,B)$ be a projective log canonical pair. We will show that $(X,B)$ has a log minimal model if either $K_X+B$ birationally has a Nakayama-Zariski decomposition with nef positive part, or that $K_X+B$ is big and birationally it has a Fujita or CKM Zariski decomposition. Along the way we introduce polarized pairs $(X,B+P)$ where $(X,B)$ is a usual projective pair and $P$ is nef, and study the birational geometry of such pairs.

The augmented base locus of real divisors over arbitrary fields

We show that the augmented base locus coincides with the exceptional locus (i.e. null locus) for any nef $\mathbb{R}$-Cartier divisor on any scheme projective over a field (of any characteristic). Next we prove a semi-ampleness criterion in terms of the augmented base locus generalizing a result of Keel. We also study nef divisors with positive top intersection number, and discuss some problems related to augmented base loci of log divisors.

Existence of log canonical flips and a special LMMP

Let $(X/Z,B+A)$ be a $\Q$-factorial dlt pair where $B,A\ge 0$ are $\Q$-divisors and $K_X+B+A\sim_\Q 0/Z$. We prove that any LMMP$/Z$ on $K_X+B$ with scaling of an ample$/Z$ divisor terminates with a good log minimal model or a Mori fibre space. We show that a more general statement follows from the ACC for lc thresholds. An immediate corollary of these results is that log flips exist for log canonical pairs.

On the moduli part of the Kawamata-Kodaira canonical bundle formula

It is conjectured that the moduli b-divisor of the Kawamata-Kodaira canonical bundle formula associated to a klt-trivial fibration $(X,B)\to Z$ is semi-ample. In this paper, we show the semi-ampleness of an arbitrarily small perturbation of the moduli b-divisor by a fixed appropriate divisor which roughly speaking comes from a section of $K_X+B$. We apply the above result to settle a conjecture of Fujino and Gongyo: if $f\colon X\to Z$ is a smooth surjective morphism of smooth projective varieties with $-K_X$ semi-ample, then $-K_Z$ is also semi-ample. We list several counter-examples to show that this fails without the smoothness assumption on $f$.

Singularities on the base of a Fano type fibration

Let $f\colon X\to Z$ be a Mori fibre space. McKernan conjectured that the singularities of $Z$ are bounded in terms of the singularities of $X$. Shokurov generalised this to pairs: let $(X,B)$ be a klt pair and $f\colon X\to Z$ a contraction such that $K_X+B\sim_\R 0/Z$ and that the general fibres of $f$ are Fano type varieties; adjunction for fibre spaces produces a discriminant divisor $B_Z$ and a moduli divisor $M_Z$ on $Z$. it is then conjectured that the singularities of $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of the singularities of $(X,B)$. We prove Shokurov conjecture when $(F,\Supp B_F)$ belongs to a bounded family where $F$ is a general fibre of $f$ and $K_F+B_F=(K_X+B)|_F$.
