Cyclic theory and the pericyclic category

We give a historical perspective on the role of the cyclic category in the development of cyclic theory. This involves a continuous interplay between the extension in characteristic one and in S-algebras, of the traditional development of cyclic theory, and the geometry of the toposes associated with several small categories involved. We clarify the link between various existing presentations of the cyclic and the epicyclic categories and we exemplify the role of the absolute coefficients by presenting the ring of the integers as polynomials in powers of 3, with coefficients in the spherical group ring S[C_2] of the cyclic group of order two. Finally, we introduce the pericyclic category which unifies and refines two conflicting notions of epicyclic space existing in the literature.

Quasi-inner functions and local factors

We introduce the notion of {\it quasi-inner} function and show that the product $u=ρ_\infty\prod ρ_v$ of $m+1$ ratios of local {$L$-}factors {$ρ_v(z)=γ_v(z)/γ_v(1-z)$} over a finite set $F$ of places of the field of rational numbers {inclusive of} the archimedean place is {quasi-inner} on the left of the critical line $\Re(z)= \frac 12$ in the following sense. The off diagonal part $u_{21}$ of the matrix of the multiplication by $u$ in the orthogonal decomposition of the Hilbert space $L^2$ of square integrable functions on the critical line into the Hardy space $H^2$ and its orthogonal complement is a compact operator. When interpreted on the unit disk, the quasi-inner condition means that the associated Haenkel matrix is compact. We show that none of the individual non-archimedean ratios $ρ_v$ is quasi-inner and, in order to prove our main result we use Gauss multiplication theorem to factor the archimedean ratio $ρ_\infty$ into a product of $m$ quasi-inner functions whose product with each $ρ_v$ retains the property to be quasi-inner. Finally we prove that Sonin's space is simply the kernel of the diagonal part $u_{22}$ for the quasi-inner function $u=ρ_\infty$, and when $u(F)=\prod_{v\in F} ρ_v$ the kernels of the $u(F)_{22}$ form an inductive system of infinite dimensional spaces which are the semi-local analogues of (classical) Sonin's spaces.

Segal's Gamma rings and universal arithmetic

Segal's Gamma-rings provide a natural framework for absolute algebraic geometry. We use Almkvist's global Witt construction to explore the relation with J. Borger F1-geometry and compute the Witt functor-ring of Almkvist for the simplest Gamma-ring S. We prove that it is isomorphic to the Galois invariant part of the BC-system, and exhibit the close relation between Lambda-rings and the Arithmetic site. Then, we concentrate on the Arakelov compactification of Z which acquires a structure sheaf of S-algebras. After supplying a probabilistic interpretation of the classical theta invariant of a divisor D, we show how to associate to D a Gamma-space that encodes, in homotopical terms, the Riemann-Roch problem for D.

Weil positivity and Trace formula, the archimedean place

We provide a potential conceptual reason for the positivity of the Weil functional using the Hilbert space framework of the semi-local trace formula of the paper "Trace formula in noncommutative geometry and the zeros of the Riemann zeta function". (Selecta Math. 5 (1999), no. 1, 29--106). We explore in great details the simplest case of the single archimedean place. The root of the positivity is the trace of the scaling action compressed onto the orthogonal complement of the range of the cutoff projections associated to the cutoff in phase space, for cutoff parameter equal to 1. We express the difference between the Weil distribution and the Sonin trace (coming from the above compression of the scaling action) in terms of prolate spheroidal wave functions, and use as a key device the theory of hermitian Toeplitz matrices to control the difference. All the ingredients and tools used above make sense in the general semi-local case, where Weil positivity implies RH.

Geometry of the scaling site

We construct the scaling site S by implementing the extension of scalars on the arithmetic site, from the smallest Boolean semifield to the tropical semifield of positive real numbers. The obtained semiringed topos is the Grothendieck topos semi-direct product of the Euclidean half-line and the monoid of positive integers acting by multiplication, endowed with the structure sheaf of piecewise affine, convex functions with integral slopes. We show that the points of this topos coincide with the adele class space of the rationals and that this latter space inherits the geometric structure of a tropical curve. We restrict this construction to the periodic orbit of the scaling flow associated to each prime and obtain a quasi-tropical structure which turns this orbit into a variant C of the classical Jacobi description of an elliptic curve. On C, we develop the theory of Cartier divisors, determine the structure of the quotient of the abelian group of divisors by the subgroup of principal divisors, develop the theory of theta functions, and prove the Riemann-Roch formula which involves real valued dimensions, as in the type II index theory. We show that one would have been led to the same definition of the scaling site by analyzing the well known results on the localization of zeros of analytic functions involving Newton polygons in the non-archimedean case and the Jensen's formula in the complex case.

Absolute algebra and Segal's Gamma sets

We show that the basic categorical concept of an S-algebra as derived from the theory of Segal's Gamma-sets provides a unifying description of several constructions attempting to model an algebraic geometry over the absolute point. It merges, in particular, the approaches using monoids, semirings and hyperrings as well as the development by means of monads and generalized rings in Arakelov geometry. The assembly map determines a functorial way to associate an S-algebra to a monad on pointed sets. The notion of an S-algebra is very familiar in algebraic topology where it also provides a suitable groundwork to the definition of topological cyclic homology. The main contribution of this paper is to point out its relevance and unifying role in arithmetic, in relation with the development of an algebraic geometry over symmetric closed monoidal categories.

The Scaling Site

We investigate the semi-ringed topos obtained by extension of scalars from the arithmetic site of our previous work, by replacing the smallest Boolean semifield by the tropical semifield of real numbers with the max-plus operations. The obtained site is the semi-direct product of the Euclidean half-line by the action of the monoid of positive integers by multiplication. Its points are the same as the points of the arithmetic site over the tropical semifield of real numbers, and coincide with the quotient of the adele class space of Q by the action of the maximal compact subgroup of the idele class group. The structure sheaf of the scaling topos endows it with a natural structure of tropical curve over the arithmetic topos. The restriction of this structure to the periodic orbits of the scaling flow gives, for each prime p, an analogue of an elliptic curve whose Jacobian is a cyclic group of order p-1. The Riemann-Roch formula holds and involves real valued dimensions and real degrees for divisors.

The Arithmetic Site

We show that the non-commutative geometric approach to the Riemann zeta function has an algebraic geometric incarnation: the "Arithmetic Site". This site involves the tropical semiring viewed as a sheaf on the topos which is the dual of the multiplicative semigroup of positive integers. We prove that the set of points of the arithmetic site over the maximal compact subring of the tropical semifield is the non-commutative space quotient of the adele class space of Q by the action of the maximal compact subgroup of the idele class group. We realize the Frobenius correspondences in the square of the "Arithmetic Site" and compute their composition. This note provides the algebraic geometric space underlying the non-commutative approach to RH.

The Cyclic and Epicyclic Sites

We determine the points of the epicyclic topos which plays a key role in the geometric encoding of cyclic homology and the lambda operations. We show that the category of points of the epicyclic topos is equivalent to projective geometry in characteristic one over algebraic extensions of the infinite semifield of max-plus integers. An object of this category is a pair of an algebraic extension of the semifield and an archimedean semimodule over this extension. The morphisms are projective classes of semilinear maps between semimodules. The epicyclic topos sits over the arithmetic topos which we recently introduced and the fibers of the associated geometric morphism correspond to the cyclic site. In two appendices we review the role of the cyclic and epicyclic toposes as the geometric structures supporting cyclic homology and the lambda operations.

The universal thickening of the field of real numbers

We define the universal thickening of the field of real numbers. This construction is performed in three steps which parallel the universal perfection, the Witt construction and a completion process. We show that the transposition of the perfection process at the real archimedean place is identical to the "dequantization" process and yields Viro's tropical real hyperfield. Then we prove that the archimedean Witt construction in the context of hyperfields allows one to recover a field from a hyperfield, and we obtain the universal pro-infinitesimal thickening of the field of real numbers. We provide the real analogues of several algebras used in the construction of the rings of p-adic periods. We supply the canonical decomposition of elements in terms of Teichmuller lifts, we make the link with the Mikusinski field of operational calculus and compute the Gelfand spectrum of the archimedean counterparts of the rings of p-adic periods. In the second part of the paper we discuss the complex case and its relation with the theory of oscillatory integrals in quantum physics.

Cyclic structures and the topos of simplicial sets

Given a point p of the topos of simplicial sets and the corresponding flat covariant functor F from the small category Delta to the category of sets, we determine the extensions of F to the cyclic category. We show that to each such cyclic structure on a point p of the topos of simplicial sets corresponds a group G(p), that such groups can be noncommutative and that each G(p) is described as the quotient of a left-ordered group by the subgroup generated by a central element. Moreover for any cyclic set X, the fiber (or geometric realization) of the underlying simplicial set of X at p inherits canonically the structure of a G(p)-space. This gives a far reaching generalization of the well-known circle action on the geometric realization of cyclic sets.

Projective geometry in characteristic one and the epicyclic category

We show that the cyclic and epicyclic categories which play a key role in the encoding of cyclic homology and the lambda operations, are obtained from projective geometry in characteristic one over the infinite semifield F of "max-plus integers". Finite dimensional vector spaces are replaced by modules defined by restriction of scalars from the one-dimensional free module, using the Frobenius endomorphisms of F. The associated projective spaces are finite and provide a mathematically consistent interpretation of J. Tits' original idea of a geometry over the absolute point. The self-duality of the cyclic category and the cyclic descent number of permutations both acquire a geometric meaning.

On the arithmetic of the BC-system

For each prime p and each embedding of the multiplicative group of an algebraic closure of F_p as complex roots of unity, we construct a p-adic indecomposable representation of the integral BC-system as additive endomorphisms of the big Witt ring of an algebraic closure of F_p. The obtained representations are the p-adic analogues of the complex, extremal KMS states at zero temperature of the BC-system. The role of the Riemann zeta function, as partition function of the BC-system over complex numbers is replaced, in the p-adic case, by the p-adic L-functions and the polylogarithms whose values at roots of unity encode the KMS states. We use Iwasawa theory to extend the KMS theory to a covering of the completion of an algebraic closure of the p-adic field. We show that our previous work on the hyperring structure of the adeles class space, combines with p-adic analysis to refine the space of valuations on the cyclotomic extension of Q as a noncommutative space intimately related to the integral BC-system and whose arithmetic geometry comes close to fulfill the expectations of the "arithmetic site". Finally, we explain how the integral BC-system appears naturally also in de Smit and Lenstra construction of the standard model of an algebraic closure of F_p which singles out the subsystem associated to the Z^-extension of Q.

From monoids to hyperstructures: in search of an absolute arithmetic

We show that the trace formula interpretation of the explicit formulas expresses the counting function N(q) of the hypothetical curve C associated to the Riemann zeta function, as an intersection number involving the scaling action on the adele class space. Then, we discuss the algebraic structure of the adele class space both as a monoid and as a hyperring. We construct an extension R^{convex} of the hyperfield S of signs, which is the hyperfield analogue of the semifield R_+^{max} of tropical geometry, admitting a one parameter group of automorphisms fixing S. Finally, we develop function theory over Spec(S) and we show how to recover the field of real numbers from a purely algebraic construction, as the function theory over Spec(S).

The hyperring of adèle classes

We show that the theory of hyperrings, due to M. Krasner, supplies a perfect framework to understand the algebraic structure of the adele class space of a global field. After promoting F1 to a hyperfield K, we prove that a hyperring of the form R/G (where R is a ring and G is a subgroup of its multiplicative group) is a hyperring extension of K if and only if G union 0 is a subfield of R. This result applies to the adele class space which thus inherits the structure of a hyperring extension H of K. We begin to investigate the content of an algebraic geometry over K. The category of commutative hyperring extensions of K is inclusive of: commutative algebras over fields with semi-linear homomorphisms, abelian groups with injective homomorphisms and a rather exotic land comprising homogeneous non-Desarguesian planes. Finally, we show that for a global field of positive characteristic, the groupoid of the prime elements of the hyperring H is canonically and equivariantly isomorphic to the groupoid of the loops of the maximal abelian cover of the curve associated to the global field.

Schemes over $\F_1$ and zeta functions

We determine the {\em real} counting function $N(q)$ ($q\in [1,\infty)$) for the hypothetical "curve" $C=\overline {\Sp \Z}$ over $\F_1$, whose corresponding zeta function is the complete Riemann zeta function. Then, we develop a theory of functorial $\F_1$-schemes which reconciles the previous attempts by C. Soulé and A. Deitmar. Our construction fits with the geometry of monoids of K. Kato, is no longer limited to toric varieties and it covers the case of schemes associated to Chevalley groups. Finally we show, using the monoid of adèle classes over an arbitrary global field, how to apply our functorial theory of $\Mo$-schemes to interpret conceptually the spectral realization of zeros of $L$-functions.
