Anomalies of Coset Non-Invertible Symmetries

Anomalies of global symmetries provide important information on the quantum dynamics. We show the dynamical constraints can be organized into three classes: genuine anomalies, fractional topological responses, and integer responses that can be realized in symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Coset symmetry can be present in many physical systems including quantum spin liquids, and the coset symmetry can be a non-invertible symmetry. We introduce twists in coset symmetries, which modify the fusion rules and the generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. We call such coset symmetries twisted coset symmetries, and they are labeled by the quadruple $(G,K,ω_{D+1},α_D)$ in $D$ spacetime dimensions where $G$ is a group and $K\subset G$ is a discrete subgroup, $ω_{D+1}$ is a $(D+1)$-cocycle for group $G$, and $α_{D}$ is a $D$-cochain for group $K$. We present several examples with twisted coset symmetries using lattice models and field theory, including both gapped and gapless systems (such as gapless symmetry-protected topological phases). We investigate the anomalies of general twisted coset symmetry, which presents obstructions to realizing the coset symmetry in (gapped) symmetry-protected topological phases. We show that finite coset symmetry $G/K$ becomes anomalous when $G$ cannot be expressed as the bicrossed product $G=H\Join K$, and such anomalous coset symmetry leads to symmetry-enforced gaplessness in generic spacetime dimensions. We illustrate examples of anomalous coset symmetries with $A_5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, with realizations in lattice models.

Proposal for realizing anomalous Floquet insulators via Chern band annihilation

Two-dimensional periodically driven systems can host an unconventional topological phase unattainable for equilibrium systems, termed the Anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator (AFAI). The AFAI features a quasi-energy spectrum with chiral edge modes and a fully localized bulk, leading to non-adiabatic but quantized charge pumping. Here, we show how such a Floquet phase can be realized in a driven, disordered Quantum Anomalous Hall insulator, which is assumed to have two critical energies where the localization length diverges, carrying states with opposite Chern numbers. Driving the system at a frequency close to resonance between these two energies localizes the critical states and annihilates the Chern bands, giving rise to an AFAI phase. We exemplify this principle by studying a model for a driven, magnetically doped topological insulator film, where the annihilation of the Chern bands and the formation of the AFAI phase is demonstrated using the rotating wave approximation. This is complemented by a scaling analysis of the localization length for two copies of a quantum Hall network model with a tunable coupling between them. We find that by tuning the frequency of the driving close to resonance, the driving strength required to stabilize the AFAI phase can be made arbitrarily small.

Classification of interacting Floquet phases with $U(1)$ symmetry in two dimensions

We derive a complete classification of Floquet phases of interacting bosons and fermions with $U(1)$ symmetry in two spatial dimensions. According to our classification, there is a one-to-one correspondence between these Floquet phases and rational functions $π(z) = a(z)/b(z)$ where $a(z)$ and $b(z)$ are polynomials obeying certain conditions and $z$ is a formal parameter. The physical meaning of $π(z)$ involves the stroboscopic edge dynamics of the corresponding Floquet system: in the case of bosonic systems, $π(z) = \frac{p}{q} \cdot \tildeπ(z)$ where $\frac{p}{q}$ is a rational number which characterizes the flow of quantum information at the edge during each driving period, and $\tildeπ(z)$ is a rational function which characterizes the flow of $U(1)$ charge at the edge. A similar decomposition exists in the fermionic case. We also show that $\tildeπ(z)$ is directly related to the time-averaged $U(1)$ current that flows in a particular geometry. This $U(1)$ current is a generalization of the quantized current and quantized magnetization density found in previous studies of non-interacting fermionic Floquet phases.
