Decay/growth rates for inhomogeneous heat equations with memory. The case of small dimensions

We study the decay/growth rates in all $L^p$ norms of solutions to an inhomogeneous nonlocal heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ involving a Caputo $α$-time derivative and a power $β$ of the Laplacian when the spatial dimension is small, $1\le N\le 4β$, thus completing the already available results for large spatial dimensions. Rates depend not only on $p$, but also on the space-time scale and on the time behavior of the spatial $L^1$ norm of the forcing term.

Large-time behavior for a fully nonlocal heat equation

We study the large-time behavior in all $L^p$ norms and in different space-time scales of solutions to a nonlocal heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ involving a Caputo $α$-time derivative and a power of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, $s\in (0,1)$, extending recent results by the authors for the case $s=1$. The initial data are assumed to be integrable, and, when required, to be also in $L^p$. The main novelty with respect to the case $s=1$ comes from the behaviour in fast scales, for which, thanks to the fat tails of the fundamental solution of the equation, we are able to give results that are not available neither for the case $s=1$ nor, to our knowledge, for the standard heat equation, $s=1$, $α=1$.

On the uniqueness of solutions of a semilinear equation in an annulus

We establish the uniqueness of positive radial solutions of $$\begin{cases} Δu +f(u)=0,\quad x\in A \\ u(x) =0 \quad x\in \partial A \end{cases} $$ where $A:=A_{a,b}=\{ x\in {\mathbb R}^n : a<|x|<b \}$, $0<a<b\le\infty$. We assume that the nonlinearity $f\in C[0,\infty)\cap C^1(0,\infty)$ is such that $f(0)=0$ and satisfies some convexity and growth conditions, and either $f(s)>0$ for all $s>0$, or has one zero at $B>0$, is non positive and not identically 0 in $(0,B)$ and it is positive in $(B,\infty)$.

Near field asymptotic behavior for the porous medium equation on the half-line

Kamin and Vázquez proved in 1991 that solutions to the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the porous medium equation $u_t=(u^m)_{xx}$ on the half line with zero boundary data and nonnegative compactly supported integrable initial data behave for large times as a dipole type solution to the equation having the same first moment as the initial data, with an error which is $o(t^{-1/m})$. However, on sets of the form $0<x<g(t)$, with $g(t)=o(t^{1/(2m)})$ as $t\to\infty$, in the so called near field, the dipole solution is $o(t^{-1/m})$, and their result does not give neither the right rate of decay of the solution, nor a nontrivial asymptotic profile. In this paper we will show that the error is $o\big(t^{-(2m+1)/(2m^2)}(1+x)^{1/m}\big)$. This allows in particular to obtain a nontrivial asymptotic profile in the near field limit, which is a multiple of $x^{1/m}$, thus improving in this scale the results of Kamin and Vázquez.

Near field asymptotics for the porous medium equation in exterior domains. The critical two-dimensional case

We consider the porous medium equation in an exterior two-dimensional domain which excludes a hole, with zero Dirichlet data on its boundary. Gilding and Goncerzewicz proved in [Gilding-Goncerzewicz-2007] that in the far field scale, $x=ξt^{\frac1{2m}}/(\log t)^{\frac{m-1}{2m}}$, $ξ\ne 0$, solutions to this problem with an integrable and compactly supported initial data behave as an instantaneous point-source solution for the equation with a variable mass that decays to 0 in a precise way, determined by the initial data and the hole. However, their result does not say much about the behavior when $|x|=o\big(t^{\frac1{2m}}/(\log t)^{\frac{m-1}{2m}}\big)$, in the so called near field scale, except that the solution is $o\big((t\log t)^{-\frac1m}\big)$ there. In particular, it does not give a sharp decay rate, neither a nontrivial asymptotic profile, on compact sets. In this paper we characterize the large time behavior in such scale, thus completing the results of [Gilding-Goncerzewicz-2007].

Asymptotic behavior for a nonlocal diffusion equation in exterior domains: the critical two-dimensional case

We study the long time behavior of bounded, integrable solutions to a nonlocal diffusion equation, $\partial _t u=J*u-u$, where $J$ is a smooth, radially symmetric kernel with support $B_d(0)\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. The problem is set in an exterior two-dimensional domain which excludes a hole $\mathcal{H}$, and with zero Dirichlet data on $\mathcal{H}$. In the far field scale, $ξ_1\le |x|t^{-1/2}\le ξ_2$ with $ξ_1,ξ_2>0$, the scaled function $\log t\, u(x,t)$ behaves as a multiple of the fundamental solution for the local heat equation with a certain diffusivity determined by $J$. The proportionality constant, which characterizes the first non-trivial term in the asymptotic behavior of the mass, is given by means of the asymptotic \lq logarithmic momentum' of the solution, $\lim_{t\to\infty}\int_{\mathbb{R}^2}u(x,t)\log|x|\,dx$. This asymptotic quantity can be easily computed in terms of the initial data. In the near field scale, $|x|\le t^{1/2}h(t)$ with $\lim_{t\to\infty} h(t)=0$, the scaled function $t(\log t)^2u(x,t)/\log |x|$ converges to a multiple of $ϕ(x)/\log |x|$, where $ϕ$ is the unique stationary solution of the problem that behaves as $\log|x|$ when $|x|\to\infty$. The proportionality constant is obtained through a matching procedure with the far field limit. Finally, in the very far field, $|x|\ge t^{1/2} g(t)$ with $g(t)\to\infty$, the solution is proved to be of order $o((t\log t)^{-1})$.

Multiplicity results for sign changing bound state solutions of a semilinear equation

In this paper we give conditions on $f$ so that problem $$ Δu +f(u)=0,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N, N\ge 2, $$ has at least two radial bound state solutions with any prescribed number of zeros, and such that $u(0)$ belongs to a specific subinterval of $(0,\infty)$. This property will allow us to give conditions on $f$ so that this problem has at least any given number of radial solutions having a prescribed number of zeros.

Asymptotic behavior for a one-dimensional nonlocal diffusion equation in exterior domains

We study the long time behavior of solutions to the nonlocal diffusion equation $\partial_t u=J*u-u$ in an exterior one-dimensional domain, with zero Dirichlet data on the complement. In the far field scale, $ξ_1\le|x|t^{-1/2}\leξ_2$, $ξ_1,ξ_2>0$, this behavior is given by a multiple of the dipole solution for the local heat equation with a diffusivity determined by $J$. However, the proportionality constant is not the same on $\mathbb{R}_+$ and $\mathbb{R}_-$: it is given by the asymptotic first momentum of the solution on the corresponding half line, which can be computed in terms of the initial data. In the near field scale, $|x|\le t^{1/2}h(t)$, $\lim_{t\to\infty}h(t)=0$, the solution scaled by a factor $t^{3/2}/(|x|+1)$ converges to a stationary solution of the problem that behaves as $b^\pm{x}$ as $x\to\pm\infty$. The constants $b^\pm$ are obtained through a matching procedure with the far field limit. In the very far field, $|x|{\ge}t^{1/2} g(t)$, $g(t)\to\infty$, the solution has order $o(t^{-1})$.

Existence of sign changing solutions for an equation with a weighted p-Laplace operator

We consider radial solutions of a general elliptic equation involving a weighted $p$-Laplace operator with a subcritical nonlinearity. By a shooting method we prove the existence of solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane, a very general computation of an angular velocity and new estimates for the decay of an energy associated with an asymptotic Hamiltonian problem. Estimating the rate of decay for the energy requires a sub-criticality condition. The method covers the case of solutions which are not compactly supported or which have compact support. In the last case, we show that the size of the support increases with the number of nodes.

On the existence of sign changing bound state solutions of a quasilinear equation

In this paper we establish the existence of bound state solutions of any given order to $$ Δ_m u +f(u)=0, x\in R^N, N\ge m>1, (P) $$ where $Δ_m u=\nabla\cdot(|\nabla u|^{m-2}\nabla u)$ using the same techniques as in [GST] to establish the existence of a ground state solution to (P). Since our solutions change sign, we assume f is continuous in R. The main point here is that by asking a stronger subcritical assumption (see (f_3)(ii) below) than the one considered in [GST], we are able to adapt their techniques to obtain the existence of bound states with a prescribed number of zeros.
