Quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, and dualities in the quantum Hall system

Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the microscopic degrees of freedom with the macroscopic ones. We show the origin of these maps by embedding the bosonized version of the original quantum wires model in a gauge invariant theory and using particle vortex-duality.

Bosonization of the Thirring Model in 2+1 Dimensions

In this work we provide a bosonized version of the Thirring model in 2+1 dimensions in the case of single fermion species, where we do not have the benefit of large N expansion. In this situation there are very few analytical methods to extract nonperturbative information. Meanwhile, nontrivial behavior is expected to take place precisely in this regime. To establish the bosonization of the Thirring model, we consider a deformation of a basic fermion-boson duality relation in 2+1 dimensions. The bosonized model interpolates between the ultraviolet and infrared regimes, passing several consistency checks and recovering the usual bosonization relation of the web of dualities in the infrared limit. In addition the duality predicts the existence of a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point in the Thirring model.

Spontaneous Breaking of Lorentz Symmetry with an antisymmetric tensor

Spontaneous violation of Lorentz symmetry by the vacuum condensation of an antisymmetric $2$-tensor is considered. The coset construction for nonlinear realization of spacetime symmetries is employed to build the most general low-energy effective action for the Goldstone modes interacting with photons. We analyze the model within the context of the Standard-Model Extension and noncommutative QED. Experimental bounds for some parameters of the model are discussed, and we readdress the subtle issues of stability and causality in Lorentz non-invariant scenarios. Besides the two photon polarizations, just one Goldstone mode must be dynamical to set a sensible low-energy effective model, and the enhancement of the stability by accounting interaction terms points to a protection against observational Lorentz violation.
