A reinforcement learning-based link quality estimation strategy for RPL and its impact on topology management

Over the last few years, standardisation efforts are consolidating the role of the Routing Protocol for LowPower and Lossy Networks (RPL) as the standard routing protocol for IPv6 based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Although many core functionalities are well defined, others are left implementation dependent. Among them, the definition of an efficient link quality estimation (LQE) strategy is of paramount importance, as it influences significantly both the quality of the selected network routes and nodes' energy consumption. In this paper, we present RLProbe, a novel strategy for link quality monitoring in RPL, which accurately measures link quality with minimal overhead and energy waste. To achieve this goal, RLProbe leverages both synchronous and asynchronous monitoring schemes to maintain up-to-date information on link quality and to promptly react to sudden topology changes, e.g. due to mobility. Our solution relies on a reinforcement learning model to drive the monitoring procedures in order to minimise the overhead caused by active probing operations. The performance of the proposed solution is assessed by means of simulations and real experiments. Results demonstrated that RLProbe helps in effectively improving packet loss rates, allowing nodes to promptly react to link quality variations as well as to link failures due to node mobility.

Automating Large-Scale Simulation and Data Analysis with OMNeT++: Lession Learned and Future Perspectives

Simulation is widely adopted in the study of modern computer networks. In this context, OMNeT++ provides a set of very effective tools that span from the definition of the network, to the automation of simulation execution and quick result representation. However, as network models become more and more complex to cope with the evolution of network systems, the amount of simulation factors, the number of simulated nodes and the size of results grow consequently, leading to simulations with larger scale. In this work, we perform a critical analysis of the tools provided by OMNeT++ in case of such large-scale simulations. We then propose a unified and flexible software architecture to support simulation automation.

Efficient handoff for mass transit connectivity using IEEE 802.11

In the recent years, WiFi standard has been used to develop different kind of wireless networks due to its flexibility and the availability of cheap off the shelf hardware. Even if the standard itself lacks mobility support, it has been used in networks with mobile nodes. When mobility is involved, a fast handoff is of paramount importance, especially with multimedia applications. The current IEEE 802.11 standard does not provide any specification about how the handoff should take place. In this paper we propose a handoff scheme optimized for networks providing wireless connection to mass transit vehicles. The structure of the procedure is redesigned to minimize delay as well as assure reliability. A reliable handoff triggering mechanism is also designed exploiting the results obtained from a set of preliminary outdoor experiments. The proposed scheme was implemented and deployed in an experimental testbed, and several indoor tests were run in order to demonstrate its reliability and efficiency.
