Non-homothetic convex ancient solutions for flows by high powers of curvature

We prove the existence of closed convex ancient solutions to curvature flows which become more and more oval for large negative times. The speed function is a general symmetric function of the principal curvatures, homogeneous of degree greater than one. This generalises previous work on the mean curvature flow and other one-homogeneous curvature flows. As an auxiliary result, we prove a new theorem on the convergence to a round point of convex rotationally symmetric hypersurfaces satisfying a suitable constraint on the curvatures.

Strong spherical rigidity of ancient solutions of expansive curvature flows

We consider geometric flows of hypersurfaces expanding by a function of the extrinsic curvature and we show that the homothethic sphere is the unique solution of the flow which converges to a point at the initial time. The result does not require assumptions on the speed other than positivity and monotonicity and it is proved using a reflection argument. Our theorem shows that expanding flows exhibit stronger spherical rigidity, if compared with the classification results of ancient solutions in the contractive case.

Cylindrical estimates for mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in CROSSes

We consider the mean curvature flow of a closed hypersurface in the complex or quaternionic projective space. Under a suitable pinching assumption on the initial data, we prove apriori estimates on the principal curvatures which imply that the asymptotic profile near a singularity is either strictly convex or cylindrical. This result generalizes to a large class of symmetric ambient spaces the estimates obtained in the previous works on the mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and in the sphere.

Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of $\mathbb{CP}^n$

We consider the evolution by mean curvature flow of a closed submanifold of the complex projective space. We show that, if the submanifold has small codimension and satisfies a suitable pinching condition on the second fundamental form, then the evolution has two possible behaviors: either the submanifold shrinks to a round point in finite time, or it converges smoothly to a totally geodesic limit in infinite time. The latter behavior is only possible if the dimension is even. These results generalize previous works by Huisken and Baker on the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of the sphere.

Neckpinch singularities in fractional mean curvature flows

In this paper we consider the evolution of sets by a fractional mean curvature flow. Our main result states that for any dimension $n > 2$, there exists an embedded surface in $\mathbb R^n$ evolving by fractional mean curvature flow, which developes a singularity before it can shrink to a point. When $n > 3$ this result generalizes the analogue result of Grayson for the classical mean curvature flow. Interestingly, when $n = 2$, our result provides instead a counterexample in the nonlocal framework to the well known Grayson Theorem, which states that any smooth embedded curve in the plane evolving by (classical) MCF shrinks to a point.

Volume preserving non homogeneous mean curvature flow of convex hypersurfaces

We consider a convex Euclidean hypersurface that evolves by a volume or area preserving flow with speed given by a general nonhomogeneous function of the mean curvature. For a broad class of possible speed functions, we show that any closed convex hypersurface converges to a round sphere. The proof is based on the monotonicity of the isoperimetric ratio, which allows to control the inner and outer radius of the hypersurface and to deduce uniform bounds on the curvature by maximum principle arguments.

Lagrangian mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of CP^n

We consider the evolution by mean curvature flow of Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex projective space CP^n. We prove that, if the initial value satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the flow exists for all times and the manifold converges to a totally geodesic submanifold. As a corollary, we obtain that a Lagrangian submanifold satisfying our pinching condition is diffeomorphic to a real projective space.

Singular gradient flow of the distance function and homotopy equivalence

It is a generally shared opinion that significant information about the topology of a bounded domain $Ω$ of a riemannian manifold $M$ is encoded into the properties of the distance, $d_{\partialΩ}$, %, $d:Ω\rightarrow [0,\infty [$, from the boundary of $Ω$. To confirm such an idea we propose an approach based on the invariance of the singular set of the distance function with respect to the generalized gradient flow of of $d_{\partialΩ}$. As an application, we deduce that such a singular set has the same homotopy type as $Ω$.
