Modeling sexual selection in Túngara frog and rationality of mate choice

The males of the specie of frogs Engystomops pustulosus produce simple and com- plex calls to lure females, as a way of Intersexual selection. Complex calls lead males to a greater reproductive success than simple calls do. However, the complex calls are also more attractive to the main predator of these amphibians, the bat Trachops cirrhosus. Therefore, as M. Ryan suggests, the complexity of the calls let the frogs keep a trade off between reproductive success and predation. In this paper, we first propose to model the proportion of simple to complex calls as a symmetric game of two strategies. We also propose a model with three strategies (simple callers, complex callers and quiet males), where we assess the effect of a male that keeps quiet and intercepts females, which would play a role of Intrasexual selection. We analyze the stable points of the replicator equations of the models that we propose. Under the assumption that the decision of the males takes into account this trade off between reproductive success and predation, our model reproduces the observed behavior reported in the literature with minimal assumption on the parameters. From the three strategies model, we verify that the quiet strategy could only coexists with the simple and complex strategies as long as the rate at which quiet males intercept females is high. We conclude that the reproductive strategy of the male frog Engystomops pustulosus is rational.

On linear differential equations with reductive Galois group

Given a connection on a meromorphic vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface with reductive Galois group, we associate to it a projective variety. Connections such that their associated projective variety are curves can be classified, up to projective equivalence, using ruled surfaces. In particular, such a meromorphic connection is the pullbacks of a Standard connection. This extend a similar result by Klein for second-order ordinary linear differential equations to a broader class of equations.

A note on the inverse problem for the lattice points

Let $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$ be a compact set such that $K+\mathbb{Z}^2=\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove, via Algebraic Topology, that the integer points of the difference set of $K$, $(K-K)\cap\mathbb{Z}^2$, is not contained on the coordinate axes, $\mathbb{Z}\times\{0\}\cup\mathbb{Z}\times\{0\}$. This result gives a negative answer to a question posed by P. Hegarty and M. Nathanson on relatively prime lattice points.

Differential equations, difference equations and algebraic relations: An extension to a theorem of Compoint

Let C be an algebraically closed field and X a projective curve over C. Consider an ordinary linear differential equation, or a linear differ- ence equation, with coefficients in the field of rational functions of X, and assume that its Galois Group G has finite determinant group and is reductive. In this context, the ideal of algebraic relations satisfied by a full system of solutions is generated by the G-invariants it contains. This result extends a theorem of E. Compoint.

Reversible linear differential equations

Let $\nabla$ be a meromorphic connection on a vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface $Γ$. An automorphism $σ:Γ\toΓ$ is called a symmetry of $\nabla$ if the pull-back bundle and the pull-back connection can be identified with $\nabla$. We study the symmetries by means of what we call the Fano Group; and, under the hypothesis that $\nabla$ has a unimodular reductive Galois group, we relate the differential Galois group, the Fano group and the symmetries by means of an exact sequence.

The inverse problem for the lattice points

Fix an positive integer $n$. Let $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact set such that $K+\mathbb{Z}^n=\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove, via Algebraic Topology, that the integer points of the difference set of $K$, $(K-K)\cap\mathbb{Z}^n$, is not contained on the coordinate axes, $\mathbb{Z}\times\{0\}\times\ldots\times\{0\}\cup\{0\}\times\mathbb{Z}\times\ldots\times\{0\}\cup\ldots\cup\{0\}\times\{0\}\times\ldots\times\mathbb{Z}$. This result gives a negative answer to a question posed by P. Hegarty and M. Nathanson on relatively prime lattice points.
