Effective field theories for superconducting systems with multiple Fermi surfaces

In this work we investigate the description of superconducting systems with multiple Fermi surfaces. For the case of one Fermi surface we re-obtain the result that the superconductor is more precisely described as a topological state of matter. Studying the case of more than one Fermi surface, we obtain the effective theory describing a time reversal symmetric topological superconductor. These results are obtained by employing a general procedure to construct effective low energy actions describing states of electromagnetic systems interacting with charges and defects. The procedure consists in taking into account the proliferation or dilution of these charges and defects and its consequences for the low energy description of the electromagnetic response of the system. We find that the main ingredient entering the low energy characterization of the system with more the one Fermi surface is a non-conservation of the canonical supercurrent triggered by particular vortex configurations.

Lifshitz-scaling to Lorentz-violating high derivative operator and gamma-ray busts

In this work we have used a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling to rewrite a Lorentz-violating higher-order derivative electrodynamics controlled by a background four-vector $n_μ$. The photon propagator was obtained and we have analyzed the dispersion relation and the observational results of gamma-ray burst (GRB) experiments were used. The limits of the critical exponent were discussed in the light of the GRB data and the physical implications were compared with the current GRB-Lorentz-invariance-violation literature. We show that the bound for the Lorentz-violating coupling for dimension-six operators, obtained from a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling, is eight orders of magnitude better than the result found without considering a Hořava-Lifshitz scaling, also this bound is nearby one, which is expected to be relevant phenomenologically.

Three-dimensional Lorentz-violating action

We demonstrate the generation of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons-like Lorentz-breaking ``mixed" quadratic action via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of vector and scalar fields to the spinor field and study some features of the scalar QED with such a term. We show that the same term emerges through a nonpertubative method, namely the Julia-Toulouse approach of condensation of charges and defects.

Massive photons and Dirac monopoles: electric condensate and magnetic confinement

We use the generalized Julia-Toulouse approach (GJTA) for condensation of topological currents (charges or defects) to argue that massive photons can coexist consistently with Dirac monopoles. The Proca theory is obtained here via GJTA as a low energy effective theory describing an electric condensate and the mass of the vector boson is responsible for generating a Meissner effect which confines the magnetic defects in monopole-antimonopole pairs connected by physical open magnetic vortices described by Dirac brane invariants, instead of Dirac strings.

The Chern-Simons term in a dual Josephson junction

A dual Josephson junction corresponding to a (2+1)-dimensional non-superconducting layer sandwiched between two (3+1)-dimensional dual superconducting regions constitutes a model of localization of a U(1) gauge field within the layer. Monopole tunneling currents flow from one dual superconducting region to another due to a phase difference between the wave functions of the monopole condensate below and above the non-superconducting layer when there is an electromagnetic field within the layer. These magnetic currents appear within the (2+1)-dimensional layer as a gas of magnetic instanton events and a weak electric charge confinement is expected to take place at very long distances within the layer. In the present work, we consider what happens when one introduces fermions in this physical scenario. Due to the dual Meissner effect featured in the dual superconducting bulk, it is argued that unconfined fermions would be localized within the (2+1)-dimensional layer, where their quantum fluctuations radiatively induce a Chern-Simons term, which is known to destroy the electric charge confinement and to promote the confinement of the magnetic instantons.

Effective confinement theory from Abelian variables in SU(3) gauge theory

In this Letter we use the Julia-Toulouse approach for condensation of defects in order to obtain an effective confinement theory for external chromoelectric probe charges in SU(3) gauge theory in the regime with condensed chromomagnetic monopoles. We use the Cho decomposition of the non-Abelian connection in order to reveal the Abelian sector of the non-Abelian gauge theory and the associated topological defects (monopoles) without resorting to any gauge fixing procedure. Using only the Abelian sector of the theory, we construct a hydrodynamic effective theory for the regime with condensed defects in such a way that it is compatible with the Elitzur's theorem. The resulting effective theory describes the interaction between external chromoelectric probe charges displaying a short-range Yukawa interaction plus a linear confining term that governs the long distance physics.

Julia-Toulouse approach to (d+1)-dimensional bosonized Schwinger model with an application to large N QCD

The Julia-Toulouse approach for condensation of charges and defects is used to show that the bosonized Schwinger model can be obtained through a condensation of electric charges in 1+1 dimensions. The massive model is derived by taking into account the presence of vortices over the electric condensate, while the massless model is obtained when these vortices are absent. This construction is then straightforwardly generalized for arbitrary d+1 spacetime dimensions. The d=3 case corresponds to the large N chiral dynamics of SU(N) QCD in the limit $N\rightarrow\infty$.

The 4D-2D projection of Lorentz-violating Myers-Pospelov QED

We consider the four-dimensional quantum electrodynamics extended with Myers-Pospelov Lorentz-violating dimension-5 operators to investigate 4D-2D projection. In projecting out the 4D theory down to a 2D theory we get analogs of these operators. Namely, we obtain a new two-dimensional theory with corresponding scalar and fermionic 2D Myers-Pospelov Lorentz-violating dimension-3 operators. New defect structures can also be found from this new projected out 2D scalar sector. Furthermore, we also show that this 2D scalar sector can be also radiatively induced through the new 2D fermionic sector.

The BF theory as an electric Julia-Toulouse condensate

The Julia-Toulouse mechanism is used to show that the topological Abelian BF term may be induced by the condensation of electric charges. As an application we discuss the subtle question of including consistently magnetic defects into the Maxwell-BF theory in a way to avoid the usual problems of current conservation, charge quantization, Elitzur's theorem violation and the reality of the Dirac brane, produced by the non-minimal coupling. We also discuss a new way of obtaining the Dirac's veto, which is based on the so-called Dirac brane symmetry.

Confinement, brane symmetry and the Julia-Toulouse approach for condensation of defects

In this work the phenomenon of charge confinement is approached in various contexts. An universal criterion for the identification of this phenomenon in Abelian gauge theories is suggested: the so-called spontaneous breaking of the brane symmetry. This local symmetry has its most common manifestation in the Dirac string ambiguity present in the electromagnetic theory with monopoles. The spontaneous breaking of the brane symmetry means that the Dirac string becomes part of a brane invariant observable which hides the realization of such a symmetry and develops energy content in the confinement regime. The establishment of this regime can be reached through the condensation of topological defects. The effective theory of the confinement regime can be obtained with the Julia-Toulouse prescription which (originally introduced as the dual mechanism to the Abelian Higgs Mechanism) is generalized in this paper in order to become fully compatible with Elitzur's theorem and describe more general condensates which may break Lorentz and discrete spacetime symmetries. This generalized approach for the condensation of defects is presented here through a series of different applications.

Dual approaches for defects condensation

We review two methods used to approach the condensation of defects phenomenon. Analyzing in details their structure, we show that in the limit where the defects proliferate until occupy the whole space these two methods are dual equivalent prescriptions to obtain an effective theory for the phase where the defects (like monopoles or vortices) are completely condensed, starting from the fundamental theory defined in the normal phase where the defects are diluted.

On the duality in four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking field theories

We consider new issues of duality in four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking field theories. In particular, we demonstrate that the arising of the aether-like Lorentz-breaking term is necessary in order for the 4D models to display the duality analog between the MCS and self-dual models in 3D. We further study the dispersion relations in both theories and discuss the physical contents of the models involved in this new dualilty.

U(1) effective confinement theory from SU(2) restricted gauge theory via the Julia-Toulouse Approach

We derive an U(1) effective theory of color confinement by applying the so-called Julia-Toulouse Approach for defects condensation to the SU(2) restricted gauge theory defined by means of the Cho decomposition of the non-abelian connection. Cho's geometric construction naturally displays the topological degrees of freedom of the theory and can be used to put the Yang-Mills action into an abelianized form under certain conditions. On the other hand, the use of the Julia-Toulouse prescription to deal with the monopole condensation leads to an effective action describing the phase whose dynamics is dominated by the magnetic condensate. The effective theory we found describes the interaction between external electric currents displaying a short-range Yukawa interaction plus a linear confinement term that governs the long distance physics.

Lorentz-violating Chern-Simons action under high temperature in massless QED

Lorentz and CPT violating QED with massless fermions at finite temperature is studied. We show that there is no ambiguity in the induced coefficient of the Chern-Simons-like term that defines the so-called Carroll-Field-Jackiw model at high temperature. We also show that this system constitutes an example where the breaking of CPT and Lorentz symmetries is more severe at high temperature than in the zero temperature case thus precluding any naive expectations of Lorentz symmetry restoration.

Obtaining non-Abelian field theories via Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism

In this work we have shown that it is possible to construct non-Abelian field theories employing, in a systematic way, the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism. This approach follows two steps. In the first step, the original Abelian fields are modified in order to introduce the non-Abelian algebra. After that, the Faddeev-Jackiw method is implemented and the gauge symmetry relative to some non-Abelian symmetry group, is introduced through the zero-mode of the symplectic matrix. We construct the SU(2) and SU(2)xU(1) Yang-Mills theories having as starting point the U(1) Maxwell electromagnetic theory.

Duality in nonlinear B$\wedge$F models: equivalence between self-dual and topologically massive Born-Infeld B$\wedge$F models

We study the dual equivalence between the nonlinear generalization of the self-dual ($NSD_{B\wedge F}$) and the topologically massive $B\wedge F$ models with particular emphasis on the nonlinear electrodynamics proposed by Born and Infeld. This is done through a dynamical gauge embedding of the nonlinear self-dual model yielding to a gauge invariant and dynamically equivalent theory. We clearly show that nonpolinomial $NSD_{B\wedge F}$ models can be mapped, through a properly defined duality transformation, into $TM_{B\wedge F}$ actions. The general result obtained is then particularized for a number of examples, including the Born-Infeld-BF (BIBF) model that has experienced a revival in the recent literature.

On the dual equivalence of the self-dual and topologically massive $B\wedge F$ models coupled to dynamical fermionic matter

We study the equivalence between the $B\wedge F$ self-dual ($SD_{B\wedge F}$) and the $B\wedge F$ topologically massive ($TM_{B\wedge F}$) models including the coupling to dynamical, U(1) charged fermionic matter. This is done through an iterative procedure of gauge embedding that produces the dual mapping. In the interactive cases, the minimal coupling adopted for both vector and tensor fields in the self-dual representation is transformed into a non minimal magnetic like coupling in the topologically massive representation but with the currents swapped. It is known that to establish this equivalence a current-current interaction term is needed to render the matter sector unchanged. We show that both terms arise naturally from the embedding procedure.

Bosonisation and Soldering of Dual Symmetries in Two and Three Dimensions

We develop a technique that solders the dual aspects of some symmetry following from the bosonisation of two distinct fermionic models, thereby leading to new results which cannot be otherwise obtained. Exploiting this technique, the two dimensional chiral determinants with opposite chirality are soldered to reproduce either the usual gauge invariant expression leading to the Schwinger model or, alternatively, the Thirring model. Likewise, two apparently independent three dimensional massive Thirring models with same coupling but opposite mass signatures, in the long wavelegth limit, combine by the process of bosonisation and soldering to yield an effective massive Maxwell theory. The current bosonisation formulas are given, both in the original independent formulation as well as the effective theory, and shown to yield consistent results for the correlation functions. Similar features also hold for quantum electrodynamics in three dimensions.

ON THE COVARIANTIZATION OF THE CHIRAL CONSTRAINT

We show that a complete covariantization of the chiral constraint in the Floreanini-Jackiw necessitates an infinite number of auxiliary Wess-Zumino fields otherwise the covariantization is only partial and unable to remove the nonlocality in the chiral boson operator. We comment on recent works that claim to obtain covariantization through the use of Batalin-Fradkin-Tyutin method, that uses just one Wess-Zumino field.
