Collective magnetic state induced by charge disorder in the non-Kramers rare-earth pyrochlore Tb2_{2}ScNbO7_{7}

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb2_{2}ScNbO7_{7} where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb5+^{5+}/Sc3+^{3+}. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb3+^{3+} non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb2_{2}ScNbO7_{7} stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically.

Signature of a randomness-driven spin-liquid state in a frustrated magnet

Collective behaviour of electrons, frustration induced quantum fluctuations and entanglement in quantum materials underlie some of the emergent quantum phenomena with exotic quasi-particle excitations that are highly relevant for technological applications. Herein, we present our thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation measurements, complemented by ab initio density functional theory and exact diagonalization results, on the recently synthesized frustrated antiferromagnet Li4CuTeO6, in which Cu2+ ions (S = 1/2) constitute disordered spin chains and ladders along the crystallographic [101] direction with weak random inter-chain couplings. Our thermodynamic experiments detect neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 45 mK despite the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments leading to a large effective Curie-Weiss temperature of -154 K. Muon spin relaxation results are consistent with thermodynamic results. The temperature and magnetic field scaling of magnetization and specific heat reveal a data collapse pointing towards the presence of random-singlets within a disorder-driven correlated and dynamic ground-state in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

The magnetic structure and field dependence of the cycloid phase mediating the spin reorientation transition in Ca3_3Ru2_2O7_7

We report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the magnetic structure of the cycloidal phase in Ca3_3Ru2_2O7_7, which mediates the spin reorientation transition, and establishes its magnetic phase diagram. In zero applied field, single-crystal neutron diffraction data confirms the scenario deduced from an earlier resonant x-ray scattering study: between 46.746.7~K <T<49.0< T < 49.0~K the magnetic moments form a cycloid in the a−ba-b plane with a propagation wavevector of (δ,0,1)(δ,0,1) with δ≃0.025δ\simeq 0.025 and an ordered moment of about 1 μBμ_{\rm{B}}, with the eccentricity of the cycloid evolving with temperature. In an applied magnetic field applied parallel to the bb-axis, the intensity of the (δ,0,1)(δ,0,1) satellite peaks decreases continuously up to about μ0H≃5μ_0 H \simeq 5 T, above which field the system becomes field polarised. Both the eccentricity of the cycloid and the wavevector increase with field, the latter suggesting an enhancement of the anti−-symmetric Dzyaloshinskii−-Moriya interaction via magnetostriction effects. Transitions between the various low-temperature magnetic phases have been carefully mapped out using magnetometry and resistivity. The resulting phase diagram reveals that the cycloid phase exists in a temperature window that expands rapidly with increasing field, before transitioning to a polarised paramagnetic state at 5 T. High-field magnetoresistance measurements show that below T≃70T\simeq 70 K the resistivity increases continuously with decreasing temperature, indicating the inherent insulating nature at low temperatures of our high-quality, untwinned, single-crystals. We discuss our results with reference to previous reports of the magnetic phase diagram of Ca3_3Ru2_2O7_7 that utilised samples which were more metallic and/or poly-domain.

Magnetic properties of the honeycomb oxide Na2_2Co2_2TeO6_6

We have studied the magnetic properties of Na2_2Co2_2TeO6_6, which features a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Co2+^{2+} ions, through macroscopic characterization and neutron diffraction on a powder sample. We have shown that this material orders in a zig-zag antiferromagnetic structure. In addition to allowing a linear magnetoelectric coupling, this magnetic arrangement displays very peculiar spatial magnetic correlations, larger in the honeycomb planes than between the planes, which do not evolve with the temperature. We have investigated this behavior by Monte Carlo calculations using the J1J_1-J2J_2-J3J_3 model on a honeycomb lattice with a small interplane interaction. Our model reproduces the experimental neutron structure factor, although its absence of temperature evolution must be due to additional ingredients, such as chemical disorder or quantum fluctuations enhanced by the proximity to a phase boundary.
