Evidence for Zc±Z_{c}^{\pm} decays into the ρ±ηcρ^{\pm} η_{c} final state

We study e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions with a π+π−π0ηcπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c} final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies s=4.226\sqrt{s}=4.226, 4.2584.258, 4.3584.358, 4.4164.416, and 4.6004.600 GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of 3.9σ3.9σ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at s=4.226\sqrt{s} = 4.226 GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be (48±11±11) pb(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Observation of a structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/c2c^2 in the γp→pπ0η\mathbf{γp \rightarrow p π^0 η} reaction

The reaction γp→pπ0ηγp \rightarrow p π^0 η has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the MNη_{Nη} invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/c2c^2. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for Eγ_γ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut Mpπ0≤1190_{pπ^0} \le 1190 MeV/c2c^2 a statistically significant structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/c2c^2 is observed with a width of Γ≈35Γ\approx 35 MeV/c2c^2 while the mass resolution is σresσ_{res} = 5 MeV/c2c^2. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from ≈\approx 1700MeV/c2^2 to ≈\approx 1725 MeV/c2c^2; the width increases to about 50 MeV/c2c^2 and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of ≈\approx 100 nb around Eγ≈_γ \approx 1490 MeV (W ≈\approx 1920 MeV), which coincides with the pa0p a_0 threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution. The most likely interpretation is that it is due to a triangular singularity in the γp→pa0→pπ0ηγp \rightarrow p a_0 \rightarrow p π^0 η reaction

Analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}

Using a data sample of 2.93 fb−12.93~fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions collected at s=3.773GeV\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV in the BESIII experiment, we perform an analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}. The Dalitz plot is analyzed using 1856±451856\pm 45 flavor-tagged signal decays. We find that the Dalitz plot is well described by a set of six resonances: a0(980)0a_0(980)^0, a0(980)+a_0(980)^+, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), a2(1320)+a_2(1320)^+, a2(1320)−a_2(1320)^- and a0(1450)−a_0(1450)^-. Their magnitudes, phases and fit fractions are determined as well as the coupling of a0(980)a_0(980) to KKˉK\bar{K}, gKKˉ=3.77±0.24(stat.)±0.35(sys.)GeVg_{K\bar{K}}=3.77\pm 0.24\text{(stat.)}\pm0.35\text{(sys.)} GeV. The branching fraction of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-} is measured using 11660±11811660\pm 118 untagged signal decays to be (4.51±0.05(stat.)±0.16(sys.))10−3(4.51\pm 0.05\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.16\text{(sys.)})10^{-3}. Both measurements are limited by their systematic uncertainties.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ from s=4.178\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.6004.600 GeV

The cross section of the process e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ is measured at center-of-mass energies from s=\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.600 GeV using data samples corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The dependence of the cross section on s\sqrt{s} shows an enhancement around 4.24.2 GeV. While the shape of the cross section cannot be fully explained with a single ψ(4160)ψ(4160) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) state, a coherent sum of the two states does provide a reasonable description of the data.

Determination of strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^-

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays to KS,L0π+π−K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- using a sample of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 with BB decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 measurement is expected to be between 0.7∘^{\circ} and 1.2∘^{\circ}, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZXYZ states at BESIII and BB factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835)X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

Inclusive charged and neutral particle multiplicity distributions in χcJχ_{cJ} and J/ψJ/ψ decays

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays, ψ(3686)→γχcJ(J=0,1,2)ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ} (J = 0, 1, 2) and ψ(3686)→γχcJ,χcJ→γJ/ψψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ} \to γJ/ψ (J=1,2)(J = 1, 2) events are utilized to study inclusive χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to anything, χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to hadrons, and J/ψ→J/ψ\to anything distributions, including distributions of the number of charged tracks, electromagnetic calorimeter showers, and π0π^0s, and to compare them with distributions obtained from the BESIII Monte Carlo simulation. Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection "produced" distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.

Measurement of {\boldmath J/ψ→Ξ(1530)−Ξˉ+J/ψ\toΞ(1530)^{-}\barΞ^{+}} and evidence for the radiative decay {\boldmath Ξ(1530)−→γΞ−Ξ(1530)^{-}\toγΞ^-}

The SU(3)-flavor violating decay J/ψ→Ξ(1530)−Ξˉ++c.c.J/ψ\toΞ(1530)^{-}\barΞ^{+}+c.c. is studied using (1310.6±7.0)×106 J/ψ(1310.6\pm7.0)\times 10^{6} ~J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII and the branching fraction is measured to be B(J/ψ→Ξ(1530)−Ξˉ++c.c.)=(3.17±0.02stat.±0.08syst.)×10−4{\cal{B}}(J/ψ\toΞ(1530)^{-}\barΞ^{+}+c.c.)=(3.17\pm0.02_{\rm stat.}\pm0.08_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-4}. This is consistent with previous measurements with an improved precision. The angular parameter for this decay is measured for the first time and is found to be α=−0.21±0.04stat.±0.06syst.α=-0.21\pm0.04_{\rm stat.}\pm0.06_{\rm syst.}. In addition, we report evidence for the radiative decay Ξ(1530)−→γΞ−Ξ(1530)^{-}\toγΞ^- with a significance of 3.9σσ, including the systematic uncertainties. The 90\% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be B(Ξ(1530)−→γΞ−)≤3.7\mathcal{B}(Ξ(1530)^{-}\toγΞ^- )\leq3.7\%.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb−1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉσ_{p\bar{p}}) of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (∣GE∣|G_E|) and magnetic (∣GM∣|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| and ∣GM∣|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and ∣GE∣|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics.

Measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} and observation of an excited ΞΞ baryon

Using a total of 11.0 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 GeV and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}, no significant ψ(4230)ψ(4230) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ−Ξˉ+Ξ^{-}\barΞ^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on ΓeeBΓ_{ee}\mathcal{B} for the processes ψ(4230)ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ−Ξˉ+ψ(4260)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited ΞΞ baryon at 1820 MeV/c2c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2 ∼\sim 6.5σσ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)M = (1825.5 \pm 4.7 \pm 4.7)~MeV/c2c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)Γ= (17.0 \pm 15.0 \pm 7.9)~MeV, which confirms the existence of the JP=32−J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-} state Ξ(1820)Ξ(1820).

Model-independent determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D0D^0 and Dˉ0→KS,L0π+π−\bar{D}^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3

Crucial inputs for a variety of CPCP-violation studies can be determined through the analysis of pairs of quantum-entangled neutral DD mesons, which are produced in the decay of the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. The relative strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 in the decays D0→KS,L0π+π−D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- are studied using 2.93~fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data delivered by the BEPCII collider and collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Results are presented in regions of the phase space of the decay. These are the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D \to K_{S,L}^0π^+π^- decays. Using these parameters, the associated uncertainty on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 is expected to be between 0.7∘0.7^\circ and 1.2∘1.2^\circ, for an analysis using the decay B±→DK±B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}, D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_Sπ^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D0ˉ\bar{D^0} states. This is a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. Furthermore, these results provide valuable input for charm-mixing studies, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Observation of a structure in e+e−→ϕη′e^+e^- \to ϕη^{\prime} at s\sqrt{s} from 2.05 to 3.08 GeV

The process e+e−→ϕη′e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕη^{\prime} has been studied for the first time in detail using data sample collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center of mass energies from 2.05 to 3.08 GeV. A resonance with quantum numbers JPC=1−−J^{PC}=1^{--} is observed with mass MM = (2177.5 ±\pm 4.8 (stat) ±\pm 19.5 (syst)) MeV/c2{ \it{c}^{\mathrm{2}}} and width ΓΓ = (149.0 ±\pm 15.6 (stat) ±\pm 8.9 (syst)) MeV with a statistical significance larger than 10σσ. The observed structure could be identified with the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170), then the ratio of partial width between the ϕη′ϕη^{\prime} by BESIII and ϕηϕη by BABAR is (BϕηRΓeeR)/(Bϕη′RΓeeR)\mathcal{B}^{R}_{ϕη}Γ^{R}_{ee})/{(\mathcal{B}^{R}_{ϕη^{\prime}}Γ^{R}_{ee})} = 0.23 ±\pm 0.10 (stat) ±\pm 0.18 (syst), which is smaller than the prediction of the ssˉgs\bar{s}g hybrid models by several orders of magnitude.

Partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}η

Using a sample of (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform the first partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^+K^-η. In addition to the well established states, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680), and K3∗(1780)K_3^*(1780), contributions from X(1750)X(1750), ρ(2150)ρ(2150), ρ3(2250)ρ_3(2250), and K2∗(1980)K^*_2(1980) are also observed. The X(1750)X(1750) state is determined to be a 1−−1^{--} resonance. The simultaneous observation of the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680) and X(1750)X(1750) indicates that the X(1750)X(1750), with previous observations in photoproduction, is distinct from the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680). The masses, widths, branching fractions of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^+K^-η and the intermediate resonances are also measured.

Technical Design Report for the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees suffcient safety margins.

Determination of the real part of the η'-Nb optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. The experiment has been performed with the combined Crystal Barrel and MiniTAPS detector system, using tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator. Information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η'-Nb potential has been extracted from a comparison of the data with model calculations. An attractive potential of -(41 \pm 10(stat) \pm 15(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density is deduced within model uncertainties. This value is consistent with the potential depth of -(37 \pm 10(stat) \pm 10(syst)) MeV obtained in an earlier measurement for a light nucleus (carbon). This relatively shallow η'-nucleus potential will make the search for η'-nucleus bound states more difficult.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion (πNπN) TDAs from pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair q2q^2, the amplitude of the signal channel pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 admits a QCD factorized description in terms of πNπN TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. pˉp→π+π−π0\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0 were performed for the center of mass energy squared s=5s = 5 GeV2^2 and s=10s = 10 GeV2^2, in the kinematic regions 3.0<q2<4.33.0 < q^2 < 4.3 GeV2^2 and 5<q2<95 < q^2 < 9 GeV2^2, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone ∣cos⁡θπ0∣>0.5| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of 5⋅1075\cdot 10^7 (1⋅1071\cdot 10^7) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=5s=5 GeV2^2, and of 1⋅1081\cdot 10^8 (6⋅1066\cdot 10^6) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=10s=10 GeV2^2, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around 40%40\%. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to 22 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel pˉp→e+e−\bar p p \to e^+ e^- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.\textit{i.e.} pˉp→π+π−\bar p p \to π^+ π^-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Momentum dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential

The photoproduction of ωω and η′η^\prime mesons off carbon and niobium nuclei has been measured as a function of the meson momentum for incident photon energies of 1.2-2.9 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified via the ω→π0γ→3γω\rightarrow π^0 γ\rightarrow 3 γ and η′→π0π0η→6γη^\prime\rightarrow π^0 π^0η\rightarrow 6 γ decays, respectively, registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. From the measured meson momentum distributions the momentum dependence of the transparency ratio has been determined for both mesons. Within a Glauber analysis the in-medium ωω and η′η^\prime widths and the corresponding absorption cross sections have been deduced as a function of the meson momentum. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium ωω width and η′η^\prime-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the η′η^\prime nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential, which makes the η′η^\prime meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the ωω meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of ωω mesic states very difficult experimentally.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Straw Tube Tracker

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.
