Distribution of solids in the rings of the HD 163296 disk: a multiwavelength study

In this paper we analyze new observations from ALMA and VLA, at a high angular resolution corresponding to 5 - 8 au, of the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 to determine the dust spatial distribution and grain properties. We fit the spectral energy distribution as a function of the radius at five wavelengths from 0.9 to 9\,mm, using a simple power law and a physical model based on an analytic description of radiative transfer that includes isothermal scattering. We considered eight dust populations and compared the models' performance using Bayesian evidence. Our analysis shows that the moderately high optical depth ($τ$>1) at $λ\leq$ 1.3 mm in the dust rings artificially lower the millimeter spectral index, which should therefore not be considered as a reliable direct proxy of the dust properties and especially the grain size. We find that the outer disk is composed of small grains on the order of 200 $μ$m with no significant difference between rings at 66 and 100 au and the adjacent gaps, while in the innermost 30 au, larger grains ($\geq$mm) could be present. We show that the assumptions on the dust composition have a strong impact on the derived surface densities and grain size. In particular, increasing the porosity of the grains to 80\% results in a total dust mass about five times higher with respect to grains with 25\% porosity. Finally, we find that the derived opacities as a function of frequency deviate from a simple power law and that grains with a lower porosity seem to better reproduce the observations of HD163296. While we do not find evidence of differential trapping in the rings of HD163296, our overall results are consistent with the postulated presence of giant planets affecting the dust temperature structure and surface density, and possibly originating a second-generation dust population of small grains.

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at hadron colliders in nonrelativistic QCD

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ (n=1,2,3) production at the LHC is studied at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ in nonrelativistic QCD. Feeddown contributions from higher $χ_b$ and $Υ$ states are all considered for lower $Υ$ cross sections and polarizations. The long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are extracted from the yield data, and then used to make predictions for the $Υ(nS)$ polarizations, which are found to be consistent with the measured polarization data within errors. In particular, the $Υ(3S)$ polarization puzzle can be understood by a large feeddown contribution from $χ_b(3P)$ states. Our results may provide a good description for both cross sections and polarizations of prompt $Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at the LHC.

Scattering effect in proton beam windows at spallation targets

Proton beam window (PBW) is a boundary wall between a high vacuum area in the proton beam line and the helium atmosphere in a helium vessel at a high beam power target. The thermal and mechanical problems of the PBW have been studied in other spallation neutron sources; however, the scattering effect in PBW is seldom reported in literature but it may pose serious problems for the target design if not well treated. This paper will report the simulation studies of the scattering effect in PBW. Different materials and different structures of PBW are discussed. Taking CSNS as an example, a thin single-layer aluminum alloy PBW with edge cooling has been chosen for CSNS-I and CSNS-II, and a sandwiched aluminum alloy PBW has been chosen for CSNS-III. Simulations results of the scattering effect in the presence of beam uniformization at target by using non-linear magnets at the different CSNS PBWs are presented. The simulations show that the scattering effect at PBW is very important in the beam loss and the beam distribution at the target.

Yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ production in hadronic collisions

We give predictions of $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ yields and polarizations in prompt production at hadron colliders based on non-relativistic QCD factorization formula. We calculate short-distance coefficients of all important color-octet intermediate channels as well as color-singlet channels up to $\mathcal{O}(α_S^4)$, i.e. next-to-leading order in $α_S$. For prompt $\jpsi$ production, we also take into account feeddown contributions from $χ_{cJ}$(J=0,1,2) and $\psits$ decays. Color-singlet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are estimated by using potential model, and color-octet LDMEs are extracted by fitting the Tevatron yield data only. The predictions are satisfactory for both yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and prompt $\psits$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. In particular, we find our predictions for polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ production have only a little difference from our previous predictions for polarizations of direct $\jpsi$ production.
