A search for feebly-interacting particles in BB decays with missing energy at Belle

We present a search for an invisible hidden-sector particle Xinv X_{\rm{inv}}, produced in B0→Dˉ0XinvB^0 \to \bar{D}^0 X_{\rm{inv}} and B±→hXinvB^\pm\to h X_{\rm{inv}} decays, where h=π±h = π^\pm, K±K^\pm, Ds±D_{s}^\pm, p±p^\pm. The search is performed using e+e−e^+ e^- collision data recorded with the Belle detector, corresponding to 711~fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. We set 90\% confidence level upper limits ranging between 10−410^{-4} and 10−610^{-6} on the branching fraction B(B→hXinv)\mathcal{B}(B \to h X_{\rm{inv}}) as a function of mXinvm_{ X_{\rm{inv}}}. Corresponding limits are set on B(B→hX)×B(X→γγ)\mathcal{B}(B \to hX)\times\mathcal{B}(X\toγγ) for lifetimes cτXcτ_X between 10 μ10~μm and 10 m. Many of these limits are the first direct constraints on their respective decays. Our results provide the most stringent exclusion limits to date on the branching fractions for all search channels, and exclude previously unexplored regions of parameter space relevant to several new physics models.

Search for an Axion-Like Particle in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle aa in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711fb−1711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}} data sample collected at the Υ4SΥ4S resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772×106772\times10^6 Υ4SΥ4S events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, a→γγa \rightarrow γγ. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV/c2−4.50 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the KK modes and 0.16 GeV/c2−4.20 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the K∗K^{*} modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the WW boson, gaWg_aW, as a function of aa mass. The limits range from 3×10−6GeV−13 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} to 3×10−5GeV−13 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}, improving the current constraints on gaWg_aW by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct CPCP asymmetries for B→KπB \to Kπ and B→ππB\toππ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetries of the decays B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+ π^-, B+→K+π0B^+ \to K^+ π^0, B+→K0π+B^+ \to K^0 π^+, and B0→K0π0B^0 \to K^0 π^0, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetry of the decay B+→π+π0B^+ \to π^+π^0 and the branching fraction of the decay B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387×106387\times 10^6 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain −0.03±0.13±0.04-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04 for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} branching ratio and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with a fully reconstructed accompanying BB meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,μ) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed BB meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 189.3 \,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| and ρ2ρ^{2} are extracted, where ηEWη_{\rm EW} is an electroweak correction, F(1)F(1) is a normalization factor and ρ2ρ^{2} is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain B(B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓ)=(5.27±0.22 (stat)±0.38 (syst))%\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%, ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣×103=34.6±1.8 (stat)±1.7 (syst)η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}, and ρ2=0.94±0.18 (stat)±0.11 (syst)ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}.

BB-flavor tagging at Belle II

We report on new flavor tagging algorithms developed to determine the quark-flavor content of bottom (BB) mesons at Belle II. The algorithms provide essential inputs for measurements of quark-flavor mixing and charge-parity violation. We validate and evaluate the performance of the algorithms using hadronic BB decays with flavor-specific final states reconstructed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62.862.8 fb−1^{-1}, collected at the ΥΥ(4SS) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We measure the total effective tagging efficiency to be εeff=(30.0±1.2(stat)±0.4(syst))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(30.0 \pm 1.2(\text{stat}) \pm 0.4(\text{syst})\big)\% for a category-based algorithm and εeff=(28.8±1.2(stat)±0.4(syst))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(28.8 \pm 1.2(\text{stat}) \pm 0.4(\text{syst})\big)\% for a deep-learning-based algorithm.

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, e+e−→τ+τ−e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}, from the subsequent 3-prong (τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ) and 1-prong (τ−→ℓ−νˉℓνττ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ, τ−→h−νττ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ or τ−→π−π0νττ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy s=mΥ(4S)\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the ττ-lepton mass mτm_τ in the 3-prong τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ decay, resulting in mτ=1777.28±0.75 (stat.)±0.33 (sys.) MeV/c2m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}.

Performance of production modules of the Belle II pixel detector in a high-energy particle beam

The Belle II experiment at the Super B factory SuperKEKB, an asymmetric e+e−e^+e^- collider located in Tsukuba, Japan, is tailored to perform precision B physics measurements. The centre of mass energy of the collisions is equal to the rest mass of the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance of mΥ(4S)=10.58 GeVm_{Υ(4S)} = 10.58\,\rm GeV. A high vertex resolution is essential for measuring the decay vertices of B mesons. Typical momenta of the decay products are ranging from a few tens of MeV to a few GeV and multiple scattering has a significant impact on the vertex resolution. The VerteX Detector (VXD) for Belle II is therefore designed to have as little material as possible inside the acceptance region. Especially the innermost two layers, populated by the PiXel Detector (PXD), have to be ultra-thin. The PXD is based on DEpleted P-channel Field Effect Transistors (DEPFETs) with a thickness of only 75 μm75\,\rmμm. Spatial resolution and hit efficiency of production detector modules were studied in beam tests performed at the DESY test beam facility. The spatial resolution was investigated as a function of the incidence angle and improvements due to charge sharing are demonstrated. The measured module performance is compatible with the requirements for Belle II.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing BB meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of BB meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side BB decays by measuring a signal side decay, B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν, in 34.634.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side BB multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are 0.65±0.020.65 \pm 0.02 and 0.83±0.030.83 \pm 0.03 for tag-side B+B^{+} and B0B^{0} mesons, respectively.

Charmless BB decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless BB decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the BB candidate energy (in the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+π^-, B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-, B+→KS0(→π+π−)π+B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+, B+→K+π0(→γγ)B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ), B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, and B+→K+π−π+B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II BB-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4{\rm S}) resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed BB-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side BB~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}^0 mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be εeff=(33.8±3.6(stat)±1.6(sys))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle in B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive BB decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element ∣Vcb∣|{V_{cb}}| and mass of the bb-quark mbm_b in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  fb−134.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, is used for this measurement. The decay Υ(4S)→BB‾Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B} is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one BB meson. The second BB meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The XcX_c system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle with n=1,…,6n=1,\dots,6, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal BB rest frame.

Measurement of the B0B^0 lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of B0B^0 meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7±0.28.7 \pm 0.2 fb−1^{-1}. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. B0B^0 lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side B0B^0 candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is τB0=1.48±0.28±0.06τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless BB decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~(B\mathcal{B}) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~(A\mathcal{A}) in charmless BB decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance and corresponding to 34.634.6\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The ΔEΔE distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in MbcM_{\rm bc}, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Rediscovery of B→ϕK(∗)B \to ϕK^{(*)} decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L in B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^{*} decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, to search for the B+→ϕK+B^+ \to ϕK^+, B+→ϕK∗+B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}, B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK^0_S, and B0→ϕK∗0B^0 \to ϕK^{*0} decays. Search for an invisibly decaying Z′Z^{\prime} boson at Belle II in e+e−→μ+μ−(e±μ∓)e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′Z^{\prime}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′Z^{\prime} in the process e+e−→μ+μ−Z′e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′Z^{\prime} in e+e−→e±μ∓Z′e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ−LτL_μ-L_τ theory, into upper limits on the Z′Z^{\prime} coupling constant at the level of 5×10−25 \times 10^{-2} -- 11 MZ′≤6M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6 GeV/c2c^2.

We report measurements of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l and B−→D0ℓ−νˉlB^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l processes using 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. For the B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l branching fraction and obtain B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl)=(4.60±0.05stat±0.17syst±0.45πs)%{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter ww for Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

EUDAQ −- A Data Acquisition Software Framework for Common Beam Telescopes

EUDAQ is a generic data acquisition software developed for use in conjunction with common beam telescopes at charged particle beam lines. Providing high-precision reference tracks for performance studies of new sensors, beam telescopes are essential for the research and development towards future detectors for high-energy physics. As beam time is a highly limited resource, EUDAQ has been designed with reliability and ease-of-use in mind. It enables flexible integration of different independent devices under test via their specific data acquisition systems into a top-level framework. EUDAQ controls all components globally, handles the data flow centrally and synchronises and records the data streams. Over the past decade, EUDAQ has been deployed as part of a wide range of successful test beam campaigns and detector development applications.

Radiation length images with a sufficient spatial resolution can be used to measure and disentangle complex radiation length XX/X0X_0 profiles and contribute to the understanding of vertex detector systems. Test beam experiments with multi GeV particle beams and high-resolution tracking telescopes provide an opportunity to obtain precise 2D images of the radiation length of thin planar objects. At the heart of the XX/X0X_0 imaging is a spatially resolved measurement of the scattering angles of particles traversing the object under study. The main challenges are the alignment of the reference telescope and the calibration of its angular resolution. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of XX/X0X_0 imaging, a test beam experiment has been conducted. The devices under test were two mechanical prototype modules of the Belle II vertex detector. A data sample of 100 million tracks at 4 GeV4\, \mathrm{GeV} has been collected, which is sufficient to resolve complex material profiles on the 30 μ30\,μm scale.

DEPFET active pixel detectors for a future linear e+e−e^+e^- collider

The DEPFET collaboration develops highly granular, ultra-transparent active pixel detectors for high-performance vertex reconstruction at future collider experiments. The characterization of detector prototypes has proven that the key principle, the integration of a first amplification stage in a detector-grade sensor material, can provide a comfortable signal to noise ratio of over 40 for a sensor thickness of 50-75 μm\mathrm{\mathbf{μm}}. ASICs have been designed and produced to operate a DEPFET pixel detector with the required read-out speed. A complete detector concept is being developed, including solutions for mechanical support, cooling and services. In this paper the status of DEPFET R & D project is reviewed in the light of the requirements of the vertex detector at a future linear e+e−\mathbf{e^+ e^-} collider.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

Forward tracking at the next e+ e- collider part I: the physics case

In a series of notes we explore the detector requirements of the forward tracking region for a future e+e− e^+ e^- collider with a center-of-mass energy in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV. In this first part we investigate the relevance of the forward region for a range of physics processes that are likely to be relevant in such a machine. We find that many examples can be found where excellent performance of the forward detector system may lead to a considerable increase of the physics output of the experiment. A particularly clear physics case can be made for the reconstruction of electrons at small polar angle.
