(O_8, O_8) contribution to $\bar{B} \to X_s γγ$ at O(α_s)

In this analysis, we present the contribution associated with the chromomagnetic dipole operator O_8 to the double differential decay width dΓ/(ds_1 ds_2) for the inclusive process $\bar{B} \to X_s γγ$. The kinematical variables s_1 and s_2 are defined as s_i=(p_b - q_i)^2/m_b^2, where p_b, q_1, q_2 are the momenta of b-quark and two photons. This contribution (taken at tree level) is of order α_s, like the recently calculated QCD corrections to the contribution of the operator O_7. In order to regulate possible collinear singularities of one of the photons with the strange quark, we introduce a non zero mass m_s for the strange quark. Our results are obtained for exact m_s, which we interpret as a constituent mass being varied between 400 and 600 MeV. Numerically it turns out that the effect of the (O_8, O_8) contribution to the branching ratio of $\bar{B} \to X_s γγ$ does not exceed +0.1 % for any kinematically allowed value of our physical cutoff parameter c, confirming the expected suppression of this contribution relative to the QCD corrections to dΓ_{77}/(ds_1 ds_2).

Updated NNLO QCD predictions for the weak radiative B-meson decays

Weak radiative decays of the B mesons belong to the most important flavor changing processes that provide constraints on physics at the TeV scale. In the derivation of such constraints, accurate standard model predictions for the inclusive branching ratios play a crucial role. In the current Letter we present an update of these predictions, incorporating all our results for the O(alpha_s^2) and lower-order perturbative corrections that have been calculated after 2006. New estimates of nonperturbative effects are taken into account, too. For the CP- and isospin-averaged branching ratios, we find B_{s gamma} = (3.36 +_ 0.23) * 10^-4 and B_{d gamma} = 1.73^{+0.12}_{-0.22} * 10^-5, for E_gamma > 1.6GeV. Both results remain in agreement with the current experimental averages. Normalizing their sum to the inclusive semileptonic branching ratio, we obtain R_gamma = ( B_{s gamma} + B_{d gamma})/B_{c l nu} = (3.31 +_ 0.22) * 10^-3. A new bound from B_{s gamma} on the charged Higgs boson mass in the two-Higgs-doublet-model II reads M_{H^+} > 480 GeV at 95%C.L.

NLL QCD contribution of the electromagnetic dipole operator to B -> X_s gamma gamma with a massive strange quark

We calculate the O(alpha_s) corrections to the double differential decay width dGamma_{77}/(ds_1 ds_2) for the process B -> X_s gamma gamma originating from diagrams involving the electromagnetic dipole operator O_7. The kinematical variables s_1 and s_2 are defined as s_i=(p_b - q_i)^2/m_b^2, where p_b, q_1, q_2 are the momenta of b-quark and two photons. We introduce a nonzero mass m_s for the strange quark to regulate configurations where the gluon or one of the photons become collinear with the strange quark and retain terms which are logarithmic in m_s, while discarding terms which go to zero in the limit m_s -> 0. When combining virtual- and bremsstrahlung corrections, the infrared and collinear singularities induced by soft and/or collinear gluons drop out. By our cuts the photons do not become soft, but one of them can become collinear with the strange quark. This implies that in the final result a single logarithms of m_s survives. In principle the configurations with collinear photon emission could be treated using fragmentation functions. In a related work we found that similar results can be obtained when simply interpreting m_s appearing in the final result as a constituent mass. We do so in the present paper and vary m_s between 400 MeV and 600 MeV in the numerics. This work extends a previous paper of us, where only the leading power terms w.r.t. the (normalized) hadronic mass s_3=(p_b-q_1-q_2)^2/m_b^2 were taken into account in the underlying triple differential decay width dGamma_{77}/(ds_1 ds_2 ds_3).

Tree-level contribution to \bar{B} -> X_d gamma using fragmentation functions

We evaluate the most important tree-level contributions connected with the b-> u \bar{u} d gamma transition to the inclusive radiative decay \bar{B}-> X_d gamma using fragmentation functions. In this framework the singularities arising from collinear photon emission from the light quarks (u, \bar{u} and d) can be absorbed into the (bare) quark-to-photon fragmentation function. We use as input the fragmentation function extracted by the ALEPH group from the two-jet cross section measured at LEP, where one of the jets is required to contain a photon. To get the quark-to-photon fragmentation function at the fragmentation scale μ_F \sim m_b, we use the evolution equation, which we solve numerically. We then calculate the (integrated) photon energy spectrum for b-> u \bar{u} d gamma related to the operators P^u_{1,2}. For comparison, we also give the corresponding results when using nonzero (constituent) masses for the light quarks.

NLL QCD contribution of the Electromagnetic Dipole operator to B-> X_s gamma gamma

We calculate the set of O(alpha_s) corrections to the double differential decay width dGamma_77/(ds_1*ds_2) for the process B -> X_s gamma gamma originating from diagrams involving the electromagnetic dipole operator O_7. The kinematical variables s_1 and s_2 are defined as s_i=(p_b - q_i)^2/m_b^2, where p_b, q_1, q_2 are the momenta of b-quark and two photons. While the (renormalized) virtual corrections are worked exactly for a certain range of s_1 and s_2, we retain in the gluon bremsstrahlung process only the leading power w.r.t. the (normalized) hadronic mass s_3=(p_b-q_1-q_2)^2/m_b^2 in the underlying triple differential decay width dGamma_77/(ds_1*ds_2*ds_3). The double differential decay width, based on this approximation is free of infrared- and collinear singularities when combining virtual- and bremsstrahlung corrections. The corresponding results are obtained analytically. When retaining all powers in s_3, the sum of virtual- and bremstrahlung corrections contains uncanceled 1/epsilon singularities (which are due to collinear photon emission from the s-quark) and other concepts, which go beyond perturbation theory, like parton fragmentation functions of a quark or a gluon into a photon, are needed which is beyond the scope of our paper.

Complete (O_7,O_8) contribution to B -> X_s gamma at order alpha_s^2

We calculate the set of O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the branching ratio and to the photon energy spectrum of the decay process B -> X_s gamma originating from the interference of diagrams involving the electromagnetic dipole operator O_7 with diagrams involving the chromomagnetic dipole operator O_8. The corrections evaluated here are one of the elements needed to complete the calculations of the B -> X_s gamma branching ratio at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. We conclude that this set of corrections does not change the central value of the Standard Model prediction for Br(B -> X_s gamma) by more than 1 %.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

NNLO corrections to B --> X_u l nu and the determination of |V_ub|

We study the impact of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections on partial decay rates in B --> X_u l nu decays, at leading-order in the 1/m_b expansion for shape-function kinematics. These corrections are implemented within a modified form of the BLNP framework, which allows for arbitrary variations of the jet scale mu_i \sim 1.5 GeV. Our analysis includes a detailed comparison between resummed and fixed-order perturbation theory, and between the complete NNLO results and those obtained in the large-$β_0$ approximation. For the default choice mu_i=1.5 GeV used in current extractions of |V_ub| within the BLNP framework, the NNLO corrections induce significant downward shifts in the central values of partial decay rates with cuts on the hadronic variable P_+, the hadronic invariant mass, and the lepton energy. At the same time, perturbative uncertainties are reduced, especially those at the jet scale, which are the dominant ones at next-to-leading order (NLO). For higher values of mu_i and in fixed-order perturbation theory, the shifts between NLO and NNLO are more moderate. We combine our new results with known power-suppressed terms in order to illustrate the implications of our analysis on the determination of |V_ub| from inclusive decays.

NNLL QCD Contribution of the Electromagnetic Dipole Operator to Gamma(anti-B -> X(s) gamma)

We present an independent calculation of that part of the O(α_s^2) contribution to the decay width Γ(\bar B -> X_s γ) which arises from the self-interference term of the electromagnetic dipole operator O_7. Using a different method, we find complete agreement with a previous calculation. This NNLL contribution is an important ingredient for the complete NNLL prediction of Γ(\bar B -> X_s γ) which will resolve the charm quark mass ambiguity appearing at NLL accuracy.

Reduction of Charm Quark Mass Scheme Dependence in $\bar B \to X_s γ$ at the NNLL Level

The uncertainty of the theoretical prediction of the $\bar B \to X_s γ$ branching ratio at NLL level is dominated by the charm mass renormalization scheme ambiguity. In this paper we calculate those NNLL terms which are related to the renormalization of $m_c$, in order to get an estimate of the corresponding uncertainty at the NNLL level. We find that these terms significantly reduce (by typically a factor of two) the error on ${BR}(\bar B \to X_s γ)$ induced by the definition of $m_c$. Taking into account the experimental accuracy of around 10% and the future prospects of the $B$ factories, we conclude that a NNLL calculation would increase the sensitivity of the observable $\bar B \to X_s γ$ to possible new degrees of freedom beyond the SM significantly.

preprint2005arXiv

Towards the NNLL precision in $\bar B \to X_s γ$

The present NLL prediction for the decay rate of the rare inclusive process $\bar B \to X_s γ$ has a large uncertainty due to the charm mass renormalization scheme ambiguity. We estimate that this uncertainty will be reduced by a factor of 2 at the NNLL level. This is a strong motivation for the on-going NNLL calculation, which will thus significantly increase the sensitivity of the observable $\bar B \to X_s γ$ to possible new degrees of freedom beyond the SM. We also give a brief status report of the NNLL calculation.

QCD corrections to the Wilson coefficients C9 and C10 in two-Higgs doublet models

In this letter we present the analytic results for the two-loop corrections to the Wilson coefficients C_9(mu_W) and C_10(mu_W) in type-I and type-II two-Higgs-doublet models at the matching scale mu_W. These corrections are important ingredients for next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic predictions of various observables related to the decays B -> X_s l^+ l^- in these models. In scenarios with moderate values of tan(beta) neutral Higgs boson contributions can be safely neglected for e,mu. Therefore we concentrate on the contributions mediated by charged Higgs bosons.

Virtual- and bremsstrahlung corrections to b -> d l+ l- in the standard model

We present the calculation of the virtual- and bremsstrahlung corrections of O(alpha_s) to the matrix elements <d l+ l-|O_i|b>. This is the missing piece in the NNLL results for various observables associated with the process B-> X_d l+ l-, like the branching ratio, the CP-rate asymmetry and the forward-backward asymmetry. This paper is an extension of analogous calculations done by some of us for the process B-> X_s l+ l-. As the contributions of the diagrams induced by the operators O_1^u and O_2^u with a u-quark running in the quark loop are strongly CKM suppressed, they were omitted in the analysis of B->X_s l+ l-. This is no longer possible for B-> X_d l+ l-, as the corresponding contributions are not suppressed. The main new work therefore consists of calculating the O(alpha_s) corrections to <d l+ l-|O_{1,2}^u|b>. In this paper we restrict ourselves to the range 0.05 < s/m_b^2 < 0.25 (s is the invariant mass of the lepton pair), which lies above the rho- and omega-resonances and below the J/psi-resonance. We present the analytic results for the mentioned observables related to the process B-> X_d l+ l- as expansions in the small parameters s/m_b^2, z = m_c^2/m_b^2 and s/(4 m_c^2). In the phenomenological analysis at the end of the paper we discuss the impact of the NNLL corrections on the observables mentioned above.

Calculation of two-loop virtual corrections to b --> s l+ l- in the standard model

We present in detail the calculation of the virtual O(alpha_s) corrections to the inclusive semi-leptonic rare decay b --> s l+ l-. We also include those O(alpha_s) bremsstrahlung contributions which cancel the infrared and mass singularities showing up in the virtual corrections. In order to avoid large resonant contributions, we restrict the invariant mass squared s of the lepton pair to the range 0.05 < s/mb^2 < 0.25. The analytic results are represented as expansions in the small parameters s/mb^2, z = mc^2/mb^2 and s/(4 mc^2). The new contributions drastically reduce the renormalization scale dependence of the decay spectrum. For the corresponding branching ratio (restricted to the above s-range) the renormalization scale uncertainty gets reduced from +/-13% to +/-6.5%.

Complete gluon bremsstrahlung corrections to the process b -> s l+ l-

In a recent paper, we presented the calculation of the order (alpha_s) virtual corrections to b->s l+ l- and of those bremsstrahlung terms which are needed to cancel the infrared divergences. In the present paper we work out the remaining order(alpha_s) bremsstrahlung corrections to b->s l+ l- which do not suffer from infrared and collinear singularities. These new contributions turn out to be small numerically. In addition, we also investigate the impact of the definition of the charm quark mass on the numerical results.

Improved Model-Independent Analysis of Semileptonic and Radiative Rare B Decays

We update the branching ratios for the inclusive decays $B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ and the exclusive decays $B\to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, with $\ell=e, \m$, in the standard model by including the explicit $O(\a_s)$ and $Λ_{\hbox{\tiny QCD}} / m_b$ corrections. This framework is used in conjunction with the current measurements of the branching ratios for $B\to X_s \g$ and $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays and upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays $B\to (K^*,X_s) \ell^+ \ell^-$ to work out bounds on the Wilson coefficients $C_7$, $C_8$, $C_9$ and $C_{10}$ appearing in the effective Hamiltonian formalism. The resulting bounds are found to be consistent with the predictions of the standard model and some variants of supersymmetric theories. We illustrate the constraints on supersymmetric parameters that the current data on rare B decays implies in the context of minimal flavor violating model and in more general scenarios admitting additional flavor changing mechanisms. Precise measurements of the dilepton invariant mass distributions in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*,K) \ell^+ \ell^-$, in particular in the lower dilepton mass region, and the forward-backward asymmetry in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, will greatly help in discriminating among the SM and various supersymmetric theories.

Two-loop virtual corrections to B --> X_s l^+ l^- in the standard model

We calculate O(alpha_s) two-loop virtual corrections to the differential decay width dGamma(B --> X_s l^+ l^-)/ds, where s is the invariant mass squared of the lepton pair. We also include those contributions from gluon bremsstrahlung which are needed to cancel infrared and collinear singularities present in the virtual corrections. Our calculation is restricted to the range 0.05 < s/m_b^2 < 0.25 where the effects from resonances are small. The new contributions drastically reduce the renormalization scale dependence of existing results for dGamma(B --> X_s l^+ l^-)/ds. For the corresponding branching ratio (restricted to the above s-range) the renormalization scale uncertainty gets reduced from +/- 13% to +/- 6.5%.

Calculation of next-to-leading QCD corrections to b -> s gluon

A detailed standard model (SM) calculation of the O(alpha_s) virtual corrections to the decay width for b -> s g is presented (g denotes a gluon). Also the complete expressions for the corresponding bremsstrahlung corrections are given. Taking into account the existing next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) result for the Wilson coefficient C_8^eff, a complete NLL result for the branching ratio BR(b->sg) is derived. Numerically, we obtain BR(b->sg)=(5.0 +/- 1.0) * 10^(-3), which is more than a factor of two larger than the leading logarithmic result. The impact of these corrections on the inclusive charmless hadronic branching ratio of B-mesons, which can be used to extract |V_(ub)/V_(cb)|, is shown to be of similar importance as NLL corrections to b-quark decay modes with three quarks in the final state. Finally, the impact of the NLL corrections to b->sg on the charmless hadronic branching ratio is investigated in scenarios, where the Wilson coefficient C_8 is enhanced by new physics.

Gluino Contribution to Radiative B Decays: Organization of QCD Corrections and Leading Order Results

The gluino-induced contributions to the decay b-> s gamma are investigated in supersymmetric frameworks with generic sources of flavour violation. It is shown that, when QCD corrections are taken into account, the relevant operator basis of the Standard Model effective Hamiltonian gets enlarged to contain: i) magnetic and chromomagnetic operators with a factor of alpha_s and weighted by a quark mass m_b or m_c; ii) magnetic and chromomagnetic operators of lower dimensionality, also containing alpha_s; iii) four-quark operators weighted by a factor alpha_s^2. Numerical results are given, showing the effects of the leading order QCD corrections on the inclusive branching ratio for b-> s gamma. Constraints on supersymmetric sources of flavour violation are derived.

The rare decay b--> s gluon beyond leading logarithms

We calculate the alpha_s virtual corrections to the decay width for b --> s gluon in the standard model. Also the corresponding order alpha_s bremsstrahlung corrections are systematically calculated in this paper. The combined result is free of infrared and collinear singularities, in accordance with the KLN theorem. Taking into account the existing next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) result for the Wilson coefficient C_8^(eff), a complete NLL result for the branching ratio B(b -> s gluon) is derived. Numerically, we obtain B^(NLL)=(5.0 +/- 1.0) * 10^{-3}, which is more than a factor of two larger than the leading logarithmic result B^(LL)=(2.2 +/- 0.8) * 10^{-3}.

2HDMs predictions for $B \to X_s γ$ in NLO QCD

The decay $B \to X_s γ$ is studied at the Next to Leading Order in QCD in a class of models containing at least two Higgs doublets and with only one charged Higgs boson non-decoupled at low-energy. The two-loop matching condition is calculated and it is found to agree with existing results. The complete dependence of the Wilson coefficients on the matching scale is given. The size of the Next to Leading Order corrections is extensively discussed. Results for branching ratios, possible CP asymmetries and lower bounds on the charged Higgs mass are presented when the convergence of the perturbative series appears fast enough to yield reliable predictions. Regions in the parameter space of these models where the Next to Leading Order calculation is still not a good approximation of the final result for these observables are singled out.

Contribution of $b \to sgg$ through the QCD anomaly in exclusive decays $B^{\pm}\to (η^{\prime},η)(K^{\pm}, K^{*\pm})$ and $B^{0}\to (η^{\prime},η)(K^{0},K^{*0})$

We compute the decay rates for the exclusive decays $B^{\pm} \to (η^{\prime},η) (K^{\pm}, K^{*\pm})$ and $B^{0}\to (η^{\prime},η) (K^{0}, K^{*0})$ in a QCD-improved factorization framework by including the contribution from the process $b\to sgg \to s (η^{\prime}, η)$ through the QCD anomaly. This method provides an alternative estimate of the contribution $b \to s c\bar{c} \to s(η,η^\prime)$ to these decays as compared to the one using the intrinsic charm content of the $η^{\prime}$ and $η$ mesons determined through the decays $J/ψ\to (η,η^\prime ,η_c) γ$. The resulting branching ratios are compared with the CLEO data on $B^{\pm} \to η^{\prime} K^{\pm}$ and $B^{0} \to η^{\prime} K^{0}$ and predictions are made for the rest.

Inclusive Decay Rate for $B \to X_d + γ$ in Next-to-Leading Logarithmic Order and CP Asymmetry in the Standard Model

We compute the decay rate for the CKM-suppressed electromagnetic penguin decay $B \to X_d + γ$ (and its charge conjugate) in NLO QCD, including leading power corrections in $1/m_b^2$ and $1/m_c^2$ in the standard model. The average branching ratio of the decay $B \to X_dγ$ and its charge conjugate is estimated to be in the range $6.0 \times 10^{-6} \leq <BR(B \to X_d γ)> \leq 2.6 \times 10^{-5}$, obtained by varying the CKM-Wolfenstein parameters $ρ$ and $η$ in the range $-0.1 \leq ρ\leq 0.4$ and $0.2 \leq η\leq 0.46$ and taking into account other parametric dependence. In the stated range of the CKM parameters, we find the ratio $R(dγ/sγ) = <BR(B \to X_dγ)>/<BR(B \to X_sγ)>$ to lie in the range between 0.017 and 0.074. Theoretical uncertainties in this ratio are found to be small. Hence, this ratio is well suited to provide independent constraints on the CKM parameters. The CP-asymmetry in the $B \to X_d γ$ decay rates is found to be in the range $(7 - 35)%$. Both the decay rates and CP asymmetry are measurable in forthcoming experiments at $B$ factories and possibly at HERA-B.

Radiative corrections in inclusive rare B decays

We report recent theoretical progress in the analysis of radiative corrections in inclusive rare B-decays. In view of the B-factories, currently under construction at SLAC and KEK, and of the upgraded CESR experiment, the experimental status of rare B decays is expected to improve significantly in the near future. We review the complete NLL QCD calculations of the inclusive b -> s gamma and the b -> d gamma decay rates. We also discuss recently computed electroweak corrections and further improvements which lead to the current theoretical prediction of B(B -> X_s gamma) = (3.32 +/- 0.30) * 10^{-4}. We shortly comment on the theoretical uncertainty and on implications to physics beyond the SM. We collect the experimental data already available from CESR and LEP and discuss experimental and theoretical problems regarding the photon energy spectrum.

$B \to X_s gamma$ in the Standard Model

We give a summary about the various contributions which have to be calculated in order to obtain the next-to-leading logarithmic result for the branching ratio $BR(B \to X_s γ)$. Combining all these ingredients, which were obtained by different groups, a complete next-to-leading-logarithmic prediction of the inclusive decay rate was recently presented in the literature. The theoretical uncertainty in the partonic decay rate is now at the 10% level, i.e., less than half of the error in the previous leading-logarithmic result. We also mention the impact of non-perturbative corrections which scale like $1/m_b^2$ and discuss in some more detail the recently discovered corrections which scale like $1/m_c^2$. It turns out that the $1/m_b^2$- and the $1/m_c^2$ terms lead to corrections to the branching ratio $BR(B \to X_s γ)$ well below the 10% level.

An analysis of two-body non-leptonic B decays involving light mesons in the standard model

We report a theoretical analysis of the exclusive non-leptonic decays of B mesons into two light mesons, some of which have been measured recently by the CLEO collaboration. Our analysis is carried out in the context of an effective Hamiltonian based on the Standard Model using next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. Using a factorization ansatz for the hadronic matrix elements, we show that existing data are accounted for in this approach. Thus, theoretical scenarios with a substantially enhanced Wilson coefficient of the chromomagnetic dipole operator (as compared to the SM) and/or those with a substantial color-singlet $c\bar{c}$ component in the wave function of $η^\prime$ are not required by these data. Implications of some of these measurements for the parameters of the CKM matrix are presented.

Heavy Majorana neutrinos in e^-e^- collisions

We discuss the process $e^-e^- \to W^- W^-$ mediated by heavy Majorana neutrino exchange in the t- and u channel. In our model the cross section for this reaction is a function of the masses (m_N) of the heavy Majorana neutrinos and mixing parameters (U_{eN}) originating from mixing between the ordinary left-handed standard model neutrinos and additional singlet right-handed neutrino fields. Taking into account the standard model background and contraints from low energy measurements, we present discovery limits in the (m_N,U_{eN}^2) plane. We also discuss how to measure in principle the CP violating phases, i.e., the relative phases between the mixing parameters.

Virtual corrections to the decay $b \to s γ$

We calculate the $O(\a_s)$ virtual corrections to the matrix element for $b \to s γ$, taking into account the contributions of the four-Fermi operator $O_2$ and the electromagnetic and color dipole-type operators. The results are combined with existing $O(\a_s)$ Bremsstrahlung corrections in order to obtain the relevant inclusive rate. The new result drastically reduces the large scale dependence of the leading logarithmic approximation. It implies that a very accurate prediction for the branching ratio for $B \to X_s \g $ will become possible once also the corrections to the Wilson coefficients are available.

Photon Energy Spectrum in $B \to X_s γ$ and Comparison with Data

A comparison of the inclusive photon energy spectrum in the radiative decay $\BGAMAXS$, measured recently by the CLEO collaboration, with the standard model is presented, using a $B$-meson wave function model and improving earlier perturbative QCD-based computations of the same. The dependence of the photon energy spectrum on the non-perturbative model parameters, $p_F$, the $b$-quark Fermi momentum in the $B$ hadron, and $m_q$, the spectator quark mass, is explicitly shown, allowing a comparison of these parameters with the ones obtained from the analysis of the lepton energy spectrum in semileptonic $B$ decays. Taking into account present uncertainties, we estimate $\BBGAMAXS = (2.55 \pm 1.28) \times 10^{-4}$ in the standard model, assuming $\absvts/\absvcb= 1.0$. Comparing this with the CLEO measurement $\BBGAMAXS = (2.32 \pm 0.67) \times 10^{-4}$ implies $\absvts/\absvcb= 1.1 \pm 0.43$, in agreement with the CKM unitarity.

Branching ratio and direct CP-violating rate asymmetry of the rare decays $B \to K^\ast γ$ and $B \to ργ$

We calculate CP-violating rate asymmetries in the rare radiative decays $B^\pm\rightarrow K^{\ast\pm} γ$ and $B^\pm\rightarrow ρ^\pm γ$. They arise because of the interference between leading-order penguin amplitudes and one-gluon corrections with absorptive phases, and provide unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation. Complementing earlier studies, we also investigate gluon exchange with the `spectator' quark. The bound state effects in the exclusive matrix elements are taken into account by a covariant model, which yields a branching ratio $BR(B\rightarrow K^\ast γ) = (4-5)\times 10^{-5}$ in good agreement with the observed value. The bound state effects increase the CP asymmetry, which is of order $1 \%$ in the channel $B\rightarrow K^\ast γ$ and $15 \%$ for $B \to ργ$.

Effects of non-standard couplings, radiative corrections and neutrino masses on the lepton spectrum in $μ$ and $τ$ decays

We investigate the combined effect of neutrino masses and non-standard couplings on the various lepton spectra in $μ$ and $τ$ decays. We emphasize the energy spectra of the neutrinos, which can be measured in the new KARMEN experiment and hence will yield novel information on deviations from the $V-A$ structure. To constrain these couplings, QED radiative corrections have to be taken into account. We evaluated them and found small corrections to the neutrino spectra.
