Atomic scale visualization of the p-d hybridization in III-V semiconductors doped with transition metal impurities

p-d hybridization of transition metal impurities in a semiconductor host is the mechanism that couples valence-band electrons and localized spins. We use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy combined with density functional theory to probe at the atomic scale hybridization of Cr single impurities with GaAs host. Combining spatial density of states mapping and in-gap states spectroscopy of the Cr substituted at the surface of the semiconductor, we give a detailed picture of the spatial extension and the electronic structure of the strongly anisotropic wave function of Cr on GaAs(110). First principles calculations allow to identify electronic character and origin of each states and show that the main resonance peaks and the wave function with "drop-eyes" lobes experimentally observed for 3d metal impurities in III-V semiconductor are direct local evidences of the p-d hybridization.

Experimental validation of density functional theory calculations on the Zr/Al oxide nanocluster formation in bcc Fe

Ab initio simulations carried out in different atomic cluster configurations in bcc Fe matrix containing Zr and Al suggest energetic favorability of Y-Zr-O phase nucleation, preferably with trigonal Y4Zr3O12 structure. Subsequently, the HRTEM investigation of the as-prepared Fe - 14 Cr-0.3 Y2O3 - 0.6 Zr - 4Al oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy shows 78% of precipitates with Y4Zr3O12 structure, thereby confirming the predictive power of ab initio simulations on the secondary formation in multi-component alloys.

Timing performance of a multi-pad PICOSEC-Micromegas detector prototype

The multi-pad PICOSEC-Micromegas is an improved detector prototype with a segmented anode, consisting of 19 hexagonal pads. Detailed studies are performed with data collected in a muon beam over four representative pads. We demonstrate that such a device, scalable to a larger area, provides excellent time resolution and detection efficiency. As expected from earlier single-cell device studies, we measure a time resolution of approximately 25 picoseconds for charged particles hitting near the anode pad centers, and up to 30 picoseconds at the pad edges. Here, we study in detail the effect of drift gap thickness non-uniformity on the timing performance and evaluate impact position based corrections to obtain a uniform timing response over the full detector coverage.

Nano-Fabricated Free-Standing Wire-Scanners with Sub-Micrometer Resolution

Diagnostics of the beam transverse profile with ever more demanding spatial resolution is required by the progress on novel particle accelerators - such as laser and plasma driven accelerators - and by the stringent beam specifications of the new generation of X-ray facilities. In a linac driven Free-Electron-Laser (FEL), the spatial resolution constraint joins with the further requirement for the diagnostics to be minimally invasive in order to protect radiation sensitive components - such as the undulators - and to preserve the lasing mechanism. As for high resolution measurements of the beam transverse profile in a FEL, wire-scanners (WS) are the top-ranked diagnostics. Nevertheless, conventional WS consisting of a metallic wire (beam-probe) stretched onto a frame (fork) can provide at best a rms spatial resolution at the micrometer scale along with an equivalent surface of impact on the electron beam. In order to improve the spatial resolution of a WS beyond the micrometer scale along with the transparency to the lasing, PSI and FERMI are independently pursuing the technique of the nano-lithography to fabricate a free-standing and sub-micrometer wide WS beam-probe fully integrated into a fork. Free-standing WS with a geometrical resolution of about 250 nm have been successfully tested at SwissFEL where low charge electron beams with a vertical size of 400-500 nm have been characterized. Further experimental tests carried out at SwissFEL at the nominal beam charge of 200 pC confirmed the resilience to the heat-loading of the nano-fabricated WS. In this work, details on the nano-fabrication of free-standing WS as well as results of the electron-beam characterization are presented.

Enhanced ULF electromagnetic activity detected by DEMETER above seismogenic regions

In this paper we present results of a comparison between ultra low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic (EM) radiation, recorded by an electric field instrument (ICE) onboard the satellite DEMETER in the topside ionosphere, and the seismicity of regions with high and lower seiismic activity. In particular we evaluated the energy variations of the ULF Ez-electric field component during a period of four years (2006-2009), in order to examine check the possible relation of ULF EM radiation with seismogenic regions located in central America, Indonesia, Eastern Mediterranean Basin and Greece. As a tool of evaluating the ULF Ez energy variations we used Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) techniques. The results of our analysis clearly show a significant increase of the ULF EM energy emmited from regions of highest seismic activity at the tectonic plates boundaries. We interpret these results as suggesting that the highest ULF EM energy detected in the topside ionosphere is originated from seismic processes within Earth's crust. We understand the results of the present study as confirming previous evidence that the ULF EM anomalous wave activity in the ionosphere can be considered a useful earthquake precursory signal

Dark-field Tomography: Modeling and Reconstruction

Dark-field images are formed by small-angle scattering of x-ray photons. The small-angle scattering signal is particularly sensitive to structural variations and density fluctuation on a length scale of several ten to hundred nanometers, offering a new contrast mechanism to reveal subtle structural variation of object. In this paper, we derive a novel physical model to describe x-ray absorption and small-angle scattering, and use the proposed model to reconstruct the volumetric small-angle scattering images. The numerical experiments and test experiments demonstrate that the reconstructed scattering images reveal unique features with a high contrast resolution. The proposed approach has great potential in biomedical imaging, nondestructive detections, and other applications.
