Electronic Scattering Effects in Europium-Based Iron Pnictides

In a comprehensive study, we investigate the electronic scattering effects in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In spite of the fact that Eu$^{2+}$ local moments order around $T_\text{Eu} \approx 20$\,K, the overall optical response is strikingly similar to the one of the well-known Ba-122 pnictides. The main difference lies within the suppression of the lower spin-density-wave gap feature. By analysing our spectra with a multi-component model, we find that the high-energy feature around 0.7\,eV -- often associated with Hund's rule coupling -- is highly sensitive to the spin-density-wave ordering, this further confirms its direct relationship to the dynamics of itinerant carriers. The same model is also used to investigate the in-plane anisotropy of magnetically detwinned EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, yielding a higher Drude weight and lower scattering rate along the crystallographic $a$-axis. Finally, we analyse the development of the room temperature spectra with isovalent phosphor substitution and highlight changes in the scattering rate of hole-like carriers induced by a Lifshitz transition.

Persistent detwinning of iron pnictides by small magnetic fields

Our comprehensive study on EuFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals a dramatic reduction of magnetic detwinning fields compared to other AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) iron pnictides by indirect magneto-elastic coupling of the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. We find that only 0.1T are sufficient for persistent detwinning below the local Eu$^{2+}$ ordering; above $T_\text{Eu}$ = 19K, higher fields are necessary. Even after the field is switched off, a significant imbalance of twin domains remains constant up to the structural and electronic phase transition (190K). This persistent detwinning provides the unique possibility to study the low temperature electronic in-plane anisotropy of iron pnictides without applying any symmetrybreaking external force.

Broadband electron spin resonance from 500 MHz to 40 GHz using superconducting coplanar waveguides

We present non-conventional electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments using microfabricated superconducting waveguides. We show that a very broad frequency range, from 0.5 to 40 GHz, becomes accessible with a high frequency accuracy of less than 1 MHz at low temperatures down to 1.6 K and in fields up to 1.4 T. This allows an accurate inspection of the ESR absorption position in the frequency domain, in contrast to the more common observation in the field domain. We demonstrate the applicability of frequency-swept ESR on Cr3+ atoms in ruby as well as on organic radicals of the Nitronyl-nitroxide family (using the 2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetra-methylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, a.k.a. NitPhOMe). Measurements between 1.6 and 30 K reveal a small frequency shift of the ESR and a resonance broadening below the critical temperature, which we both attribute to a modification of the magnetic field configuration due to the appearance of shielding currents.

Electrodynamic Response of the Charge Ordering Phase: Dielectric and Optical Studies of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

We report on the anisotropic response, the charge and lattice dynamics of normal and charge-ordered phases with horizontal stripes in single crystals of the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 determined by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy. An overdamped Drude response and a small conductivity anisotropy observed in optics is consistent with a weakly temperature dependent dc conductivity and anisotropy at high temperatures. The splitting of the molecular vibrations nu27(Bu) evidences the abrupt onset of static charge order below TCO=136 K. The drop of optical conductivity measured within the ab plane of the crystal is characterized by an isotropic gap that opens of approximately 75 meV with several phonons becoming pronounced below. Conversely, the dc conductivity anisotropy rises steeply, attaining at 50 K a value 25 times larger than at high temperatures. The dielectric response within this plane reveals two broad relaxation modes of strength Deltaepsilon_LD ~= 5000 and Deltaepsilon_SD ~= 400, centered at 1 kHz < f_LD < 100 MHz and f_SD ~= 1 MHz. The anisotropy of the large-mode (LD) mean relaxation time closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc conductivity ratio. We argue that this phason-like excitation is best described as a long-wavelength excitation of a 2kF bond-charge density wave expected theoretically for layered quarter-filled electronic systems with horizontal stripes. Conversely, based on the theoretically expected ferroelectric-like nature of the charge-ordered phase, we associate the small-mode (SD) relaxation with the motion of domain-wall pairs, created at the interface between two types of domains, along the a and b axes. We also consider other possible theoretical interpretations and discuss their limitations.

Reducing vortex losses in superconducting microwave resonators with microsphere patterned antidot arrays

We experimentally investigate the vortex induced energy losses in niobium coplanar waveguide resonators with and without quasihexagonal arrays of nanoholes (antidots), where large-area antidot patterns have been fabricated using self-assembling microsphere lithography. We perform transmission spectroscopy experiments around 6.25 and 12.5 GHz in magnetic field cooling and zero field cooling procedures with perpendicular magnetic fields up to B=27 mT at a temperature T=4.2 K. We find that the introduction of antidot arrays into resonators reduces vortex induced losses by more than one order of magnitude.

Collective Excitations in the Charge-Ordered Phase of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

The charge response of charge-ordered state in the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 is characterized by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy in different crystallographic directions within the two-dimensional conduction layer. Two dielectric modes are detected. The large mode is related to the phason-like excitation of the 2kF bond-charge density wave which forms in the ab plane. The small dielectric mode is associated with the motion of domain-wall pairs along the a- and b-axes between two types of domains which are created due to inversion symmetry breaking.
