Entanglement of Indistinguishable Particles and its Quantification

We introduce geometric measures of entanglement for indistinguishable particles, which apply to mixed states, multipartite systems, and arbitrary dimensions. They are based on generalized (i.e., not necessarily finite) norms on the set of quantum states and lead to the first necessary and sufficient computational separability criterion in this general setting. The coherent approach developed in the paper allows us to compare, in particular, entanglement for fermionic and distinguishable particles: The entanglement measure for fermionic particles coincides with the corresponding entanglement measure for distinguishable particles up to a factor of $k!$ where $k$ is the number of particles involved. By this result the amount of entanglement emerging from fermi statistics alone is clearly separated from the overall amount of entanglement. Finally, our techniques are applied to entanglement related to Schmidt and Slater numbers.

Diagonal Couplings of Quantum Markov Chains

In this article we extend the coupling method from classical probability theory to quantum Markov chains on atomic von Neumann algebras. In particular, we establish a coupling inequality, which allow us to estimate convergence rates by analyzing couplings. For a given tensor dilation we construct a self-coupling of a Markov operator. It turns out that on a dense subset the coupling is a dual version of the extended dual transition operator previously studied by Gohm etal. We deduce that this coupling is successful if and only if the dilation is asymptotically complete.

Ergodic Properties of Quantum Birth and Death Chains

We study a class of quantum Markov processes that, on the one hand, is inspired by the micromaser experiment in quantum optics and, on the other hand, by classical birth and death processes. We prove some general geometric properties and irreducibility for non-degenerated parameters. Furthermore, we analyze ergodic properties of the corresponding transition operators. For homogeneous birth and death rates we show how these can be fully determined by explicit calculation. As for classical birth and death chains we obtain a rich yet simple class of quantum Markov chains on an infinite space, which allow only local transitions while having divers ergodic properties.

A Coherent Approach to Recurrence and Transience for Quantum Markov Operators

We present a coherent approach to recurrence and transience, starting from a version of the Riesz decomposition theorem for superharmonic elements. Our approach allows straightforward proofs of some known results, entails new theorems, and has applications to other aspects of completely positive operators: It leads to a classification of idempotent Markov operators, thereby identifying concretely the Choi-Effros product, which can be introduced on the range of these maps. We obtain an abstract Poisson integral and a representation theorem for idempotent entanglement breaking channels.
