On Kalton's interlaced graphs and nonlinear embeddings into dual Banach spaces

We study the nonlinear embeddability of Banach spaces and the equi-embeddability of the family of Kalton's interlaced graphs $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ into dual spaces. Notably, we define and study a modification of Kalton's property $\mathcal Q$ that we call property $\mathcal{Q}_p$ (with $p \in (1,+\infty]$). We show that if $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-coarse Lipschitzly embeds into $X^*$, then the Szlenk index of $X$ is greater than $ω$, and that this is optimal, i.e., there exists a separable dual space $Y^*$ that contains $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-Lipschitzly and so that $Y$ has Szlenk index $ω^2$. We prove that $c_0$ does not coarse Lipschitzly embed into a separable dual space by a map with distortion strictly smaller than $\frac{3}{2}$. We also show that neither $c_0$ nor $L_1$ coarsely embeds into a separable dual by a weak-to-weak$^*$ sequentially continuous map.

A Gelfand-type duality for coarse metric spaces with property A

We prove the following two results for a given uniformly locally finite metric space with Yu's property A: 1) The group of outer automorphisms of its uniform Roe algebra is isomorphic to its group of bijective coarse equivalences modulo closeness. 2) The group of outer automorphisms of its Roe algebra is isomorphic to its group of coarse equivalences modulo closeness. The main difficulty lies in the latter. To prove that, we obtain several uniform approximability results for maps between Roe algebras and use them to obtain a theorem about the `uniqueness' of Cartan masas of Roe algebras. We finish the paper with several applications of the results above to concrete metric spaces.

Coarse Baum-Connes conjecture and rigidity for Roe algebras

In this paper, we connect the rigidity problem and the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for Roe algebras. In particular, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ are two uniformly locally finite metric spaces such that their Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent provided either $X$ or $Y$ satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. It is well-known that coarse embeddability into a Hilbert space implies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. On the other hand, we provide a new example of a finitely generated group satisfying the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients but which does not coarsely embed into a Hilbert space.

General uniform Roe algebra rigidity

We generalize all known results on rigidity of uniform Roe algebras to the setting of arbitrary uniformly locally finite coarse spaces. For instance, we show that isomorphism between uniform Roe algebras of uniformly locally finite coarse spaces whose uniform Roe algebras contain only compact ghost projections implies that the base spaces are coarsely equivalent. Moreover, if one of the spaces has property A, then the base spaces are bijectively coarsely equivalent. We also provide a characterization for the existence of an embedding onto hereditary subalgebra in terms of the underlying spaces. As an application, we partially answer a question of White and Willett about Cartan subalgebras of uniform Roe algebras.

On Banach algebras of band-dominated operators and their order structure

The goal of this paper is to study band-dominated operators on Banach spaces with Schauder basis with respect to uniformly locally finite metric spaces as well as the Banach algebras generated by them: the so called uniform Roe algebras. We investigate several kinds of isomorphisms between those Banach spaces (e.g., isomorphisms preserving norm, order, algebraic structure, etc) and prove several rigidity results on when a certain kind of isomorphism between the uniform Roe algebras implies that the base metric spaces are (bijectively) coarsely equivalent.

On the rigidity of uniform Roe algebras over uniformly locally finite coarse spaces

Given a coarse space $(X,\mathcal{E})$, one can define a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ called the uniform Roe algebra of $(X,\mathcal{E})$. It has been proved by J. Špakula and R. Willett that if the uniform Roe algebras of two uniformly locally finite metric spaces with property A are isomorphic, then the metric spaces are coarsely equivalent to each other. In this paper, we look at the problem of generalizing this result for general coarse spaces and on weakening the hypothesis of the spaces having property A.

On the uniform Roe algebra as a Banach algebra and embeddings of $\ell_p$ uniform Roe algebras

We work on $\ell_p$ uniform Roe algebras associated to metric spaces, and on their mutual embedding. We generalize results of I. Farah and the authors to mutual embeddings of uniform Roe algebras of operators on $\ell_p$ spaces. Simultaneously, we obtain rigidity results for the classic uniform Roe $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras which depend only on their Banach algebra structure.

Coarse and uniform embeddings

In these notes, we study the relation between uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces. In order to understand this relation better, we also look at the problem of when a coarse embedding can be assumed to be topological. Among other results, we show that if a Banach space $X$ uniformly embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and uniformly embeds into $Y$, and if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and homeomorphically embeds into $Y$ by a map with uniformly continuous inverse.

Duality on Banach spaces and a Borel parametrized version of Zippin's theorem

Let SB be the standard coding for separable Banach spaces as subspaces of $C(Δ)$. In these notes, we show that if $\mathbb{B} \subset \text{SB}$ is a Borel subset of spaces with separable dual, then the assignment $X \mapsto X^*$ can be realized by a Borel function $\mathbb{B}\to \text{SB}$. Moreover, this assignment can be done in such a way that the functional evaluation is still well defined (Theorem $1$). Also, we prove a Borel parametrized version of Zippin's theorem, i.e., we prove that there exists $Z \in \text{SB}$ and a Borel function that assigns for each $X \in \mathbb{B}$ an isomorphic copy of $X$ inside of $Z$ (Theorem $5$).

On the complexity of some classes of Banach spaces and non-universality

These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounded operators, and the set of Banach spaces whose set of Banach-Saks opera- tors is complemented in its bounded operators, are all non Borel in SB. At last, we give several applications of those results to non-universality results.

On the complexity of some inevitable classes of separable Banach spaces

In this paper, we study the descriptive complexity of some inevitable classes of Banach spaces. Precisely, as shown in [Go], every Banach space either contains a hereditarily indecomposable subspace or an unconditional basis, and, as shown in [FR], every Banach space either contains a minimal subspace or a continuously tight subspace. In these notes, we study the complexity of those inevitable classes as well as the complexity of containing a subspace in any of those classes.
