Multiple-Order Singularity Expansion Method

Physical systems and signals are often characterized by complex functions of frequency in the harmonic-domain. The extension of such functions to the complex frequency plane has been a topic of growing interest as it was shown that specific complex frequencies could be used to describe both ordinary and exceptional physical properties. In particular, expansions and factorized forms of the harmonic-domain functions in terms of their poles and zeros under multiple physical considerations have been used. In this work, we start from a general property of continuity and differentiability of the complex functions to derive the multiple-order singularity expansion method. We rigorously derive the common singularity and zero expansion and factorization expressions, and generalize them to the case of singularities of arbitrary order, whilst deducing the behaviour of these complex frequencies from the simple hypothesis that we are dealing with physically realistic signals.

Non-classical properties of the e.m. near field of an atom in spontaneous light emission

We use Glauber's correlation function as well as the Green functions formalism to investigate, in the case of a dipolar atomic transition, the causal behaviour of the spontaneously emitted electromagnetic field, in the A.p coupling. This brings us to examine the role played by the longitudinal electric field, which is not described in terms of photonic (transverse) degrees of freedom.

Long-lifetime coherence in a quantum emitter induced by a metasurface

An anisotropic quantum vacuum (AQV) has been predicted to induce quantum interferences during the spontaneous emission process in an atomic $V$-transition [G. S. Agarwal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5500 (2000)]. Nevertheless, the finite lifetime of the excited states is expected to strongly limit the observability of this phenomenon. In this paper, we predict that an AQV can induce a long-lifetime coherence in an atomic $Λ$-transition from the process of spontaneous emission, which has an additional advantage of removing the need for coherent laser excitation. We also carry out two metasurface designs and compare their respective efficiencies for creating an AQV over remote distances. The detection of this coherence induced by a metasurface, in addition to being yet another vindication of quantum electrodynamics, could pave the way towards the remote distance control of coherent coupling between quantum emitters, which is a key requirement to produce entanglement in quantum technology applications.

Modal Expansion of the Impulse Response Function for Predicting the Time Dynamics of Open Optical Cavities

Light interaction with optical cavities is of fundamental interest to enhance the light-matter interaction and to shape the spectral features of the electromagnetic fields. Important efforts have been carried out to develop modal theories of open optical cavities relying on an expansion of the fields on the eigen-fields of the cavity. Here, we show how such an expansion predicts the temporal dynamics of optical resonators. We consider a Fabry-Perot cavity to derive the full analytical expressions of the internal and scattered field on the quasi-normal modes basis together with the complex eigen-frequencies. We evince the convergence and accuracy of this expansion before deriving the impulse response function (IRF) of the open cavity. We benefit from this modal expansion and IRF to demonstrate that the eigen-modes of the open cavity impact the signals only during the transient regimes and not in the permanent regime.

Equalizing the near and far electromagnetic fields around particles made of different materials

We demonstrate that the electromagnetic fields scattered by particles made of different materials can be equalized. Emphasize is placed first in metallic nanoparticles that host localized surface plasmons and it is shown that their electromagnetic fields can be identically reproduced with dielectric particles. We derive the explicit formulas relating the different constitutive parameters that yield identical electromagnetic responses. This method provides the dielectric permittivities of spherical particles that reproduce the strong near electric field intensities observed around metallic particles featuring localized surface plasmon resonances in optics or near infrared frequencies. We also demonstrate the ability of homogenous dielectric particles to host the magnetic resonances predicted for exotic materials with negative permeability.

Optimal interactions of light with magnetic and electric resonant particles

This work studies the limits of far and near-field electromagnetic response of sub-wavelength scatterers, like the unitary limit and of lossless scatterers, and the ideal absorption limit of lossy particles. These limit behaviors are described in terms of analytic formulas that approximate finite size effects while rigorously including radiative corrections. This analysis predicts the electric and/or magnetic limit responses of both metallic and dielectric nanoparticles while quantitatively describing near-field enhancements.

Automorphism loci for the moduli space of rational maps

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ and $\mathcal{M}_d$ the moduli space of rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d$ over $k$. This paper describes the automorphism loci $A\subset \mathrm{Rat}_d$ and $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{M}_d$ and the singular locus $\mathcal{S}\subset\mathcal{M}_d$. In particular, we determine which groups occur as subgroups of the automorphism group of some $[ϕ]\in\mathcal{M}_d$ for a given $d$ and calculate the dimension of the locus. Next, we prove an analogous theorem to the Rauch-Popp-Oort characterization of singular points on the moduli scheme for curves. The results concerning these distinguished loci are used to compute the Picard and class groups of $\mathcal{M}_d, \mathcal{M}^s_d,$ and $\mathcal{M}^{ss}_d$.

Endomorphisms of Bounded Height and Resultant

Let K be an algebraic number field. For a degree d rational morphism of projective n-space defined over K let R denote its minimal resultant ideal. For a fixed height function on the moduli space of dynamical systems this paper shows that all such morphisms of bounded height and resultant are contained in finitely many PGL(K) equivalence classes. This answers a question of Silverman in the affirmative.

Optimizing Nanoparticle Designs to Reach Ideal Light Absorption

Ideal absorption describes a particular means of optimizing light-matter interactions with a host of potential applications. This work presents new analytic formulas and describes semi-analytical methods for the design of electric or magnetic ideal absorption in nanoparticles. These formulas indicate that ideal absorption is attainable in homogeneous spheres with known materials at specific sizes and frequencies. They also provide a means of designing core-shell particles to produce ideal absorption at virtually any frequency in the visible and near infrared range.

Controllable emission of a dipolar source coupled with a magneto-dielectric resonant subwavelength scatterer

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that a local excitation of a single scatterer of relative dielectric permittivity ε = 6 permits to excite broad dipolar and quadrupolar electric and magnetic resonances that shape the emission pattern in an un- precedented way. By suitably positioning the feed with respect to the sphere at a ?=3 distance, this compact antenna is able to spectrally sort the electromagnetic emission ei- ther in the forward or in the backward direction, together with a high gain in directivity. Materials with ε = 6 can be found in the whole spectrum of frequencies promising Mie antennas to become an enabling technology in numbers of applications, ranging from quantum single photon sources to telecommunications.

The Off-Shell Electromagnetic T-matrix: momentum-dependent scattering from spherical inclusions with both dielectric and magnetic contrast

The momentum- and frequency-dependent T-matrix operator for the scattering of electromagnetic waves by a dielectric/conducting and para- or diamagnetic sphere is derived as a Mie-type series, and presented in a compact form emphasizing various symmetry properties, notably the unitarity identity. This result extends to magnetic properties one previously obtained for purely dielectric contrasts by other authors. Several situations useful to spatially-dispersive effective-medium approximations to one-body order are examined. Partial summation of the Mie series is achieved in the case of elastic scattering.

Compact metallo-dielectric optical antenna for ultra directional and enhanced radiative emission

We report the design of highly efficient optical antennas employing a judicious synthesis of metallic and dielectric materials. In the proposed scheme, a pair of metallic coupled nanoparticles permits large enhancements in both excitation strength and radiative decay rates, while a high refractive index dielectric microsphere is employed to efficiently collect light without spoiling the emitter quantum efficiency. Our simulations indicate potential fluorescence rate enhancements of 3 orders of magnitude over the entire optical frequency range.

Mode-balancing far field control of light localization in nanoantennas

Light localization is controlled at a scale of lambda/10 in the harmonic regime from the far field domain in a plasmonic nanoantenna. The nanoantenna under study consists of 3 aligned spheres 50 nm in diameter separated by a distance of 5 nm. By simply tuning the orientation of an incident plane wave, symmetric and antisymmetric mode-balancing induces a strong enhancement of the near field intensity in one cavity while nullifying the light intensity in the other cavity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the dipolar moment of a plasmonic particle can be fully extinguished when strongly coupled with a dimer of identical nanoparticles. Consequently, optical transparency can be achieved in an ultra-compact symmetric metallic structure.
