On the subalgebra of a Fourier-Steiltjes algebra generated by pure positive definite functions

For a locally compact group GG, the first-named author considered the closed subspace a0(G)a_0(G) which is generated by the pure positive definite functions. In many cases a0(G)a_0(G) is itself an algebra. We illustrate using Heisenburg groups and the 2×22\times 2 real special linear group, that this is not the case in general. We examine the structures of the algebras thereby created and examine properties related to amenability.

Projectivity of modules over Fourier algebras

In this paper we will study the homological properties of various natural modules associated to the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. We will show that projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete and give evidence to show that amenability also plays an important role.

Norm one idempotent cb-multipliers with applications to the Fourier algebra in the cb-multiplier norm

For a locally compact group GG, let A(G)A(G) be its Fourier algebra, let McbA(G)M_{cb}A(G) denote the completely bounded multipliers of A(G)A(G), and let AMcb(G)A_{Mcb}(G) stand for the closure of A(G)A(G) in McbA(G)M_{cb}A(G). We characterize the norm one idempotents in McbA(G)M_{cb}A(G): the indicator function of a set E⊂GE \subset G is a norm one idempotent in McbA(G)M_{cb}A(G) if and only if EE is a coset of an open subgroup of GG. As applications, we describe the closed ideals of AMcb(G)A_{Mcb}(G) with an approximate identity bounded by 1, and we characterize those GG for which AMcb(G)A_{Mcb}(G) is 1-amenable in the sense of B. E. Johnson. (We can even slightly relax the norm bounds.)
