Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: stratification and Vandermonde integrals

We refine a recent heuristic developed by Keating and the second author. Our improvement leads to a new integral expression for the conjectured asymptotic formula for shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function. This expression is analogous to a formula, recently discovered by Brad Rodgers and Kannan Soundararajan, for moments of characteristic polynomials of random matrices from the unitary group.

Which numbers are not the sum plus the product of three positive integers?

We investigate the number R3(n)R_3(n) of representations of nn as the sum plus the product of three positive integers. On average, R3(n)R_3(n) is 12log⁡2n\frac{1}{2}\log^2 n. We give an upper bound for R3(n)R_3(n) and an upper bound for the number of n≤Nn \leq N such that R3(n)=0R_3(n) = 0. We conjecture that R3(n)=0R_3(n)= 0 infinitely often.

Intransitive Dice

We consider nn-sided dice whose face values lie between 11 and nn and whose faces sum to n(n+1)/2n(n+1)/2. For two dice AA and BB, define A≻BA \succ B if it is more likely for AA to show a higher face than BB. Suppose kk such dice A1,…,AkA_1,\dots,A_k are randomly selected. We conjecture that the probability of ties goes to 0 as nn grows. We conjecture and provide some supporting evidence that---contrary to intuition---each of the 2(k2)2^{k \choose 2} assignments of ≻\succ or ≺\prec to each pair is equally likely asymptotically. For a specific example, suppose we randomly select kk dice A1,…,AkA_1,\dots,A_k and observe that A1≻A2≻…≻AkA_1 \succ A_2 \succ \ldots \succ A_k. Then our conjecture asserts that the outcomes Ak≻A1A_k \succ A_1 and A1≺AkA_1 \prec A_k both have probability approaching 1/21/2 as n→∞n \rightarrow \infty.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: IV

In this series we examine the calculation of the 2k2kth moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper begins the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along [T,2T][T,2T] of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to T3T^3 with divisor functions as coefficients.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: I

We examine the calculation of the second and fourth moments and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. Previously this approach has proved unsuccessful in computing moments beyond the eighth, even heuristically. A careful analysis of the second and fourth moments illustrates the nature of the problem and enables us to identify the terms that are missed in the standard application of these methods.

Moments of zeta and correlations of divisor-sums: III

In this series we examine the calculation of the 2k2kth moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper is concerned with the precise input of the conjectural formula for the classical shifted convolution problem for divisor sums so as to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along [T,2T][T,2T] of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to T2T^2 with divisor functions as coefficients.

Period functions and cotangent sums

We investigate the period function of $\sum_{n=1}^\inftyσ_a(n)\e{nz}$, showing it can be analytically continued to ∣arg⁡z∣<π|\arg z|<π and studying its Taylor series. We use these results to give a simple proof of the Voronoi formula and to prove an exact formula for the second moments of the Riemann zeta function. Moreover, we introduce a family of cotangent sums, functions defined over the rationals, that generalize the Dedekind sum and share with it the property of satisfying a reciprocity formula. In particular, we find a reciprocity formula for the Vasyunin sum.
