Einstein vs Hawking: Black hole binaries and cosmological expansion

This note aims at investigating two different situations where the classical general relativistic dynamics competes with the evolution driven by Hawking evaporation. We focus, in particular, on binary systems of black holes emitting gravitational waves and gravitons, and on the cosmological evolution when black holes are immersed in their own radiation bath. Several non-trivial features are underlined in both cases.

Learning to Factorize and Relight a City

We propose a learning-based framework for disentangling outdoor scenes into temporally-varying illumination and permanent scene factors. Inspired by the classic intrinsic image decomposition, our learning signal builds upon two insights: 1) combining the disentangled factors should reconstruct the original image, and 2) the permanent factors should stay constant across multiple temporal samples of the same scene. To facilitate training, we assemble a city-scale dataset of outdoor timelapse imagery from Google Street View, where the same locations are captured repeatedly through time. This data represents an unprecedented scale of spatio-temporal outdoor imagery. We show that our learned disentangled factors can be used to manipulate novel images in realistic ways, such as changing lighting effects and scene geometry. Spatial Strength Centrality and the Effect of Spatial Embeddings on Network Architecture

For many networks, it is useful to think of their nodes as being embedded in a latent space, and such embeddings can affect the probabilities for nodes to be adjacent to each other. In this paper, we extend existing models of synthetic networks to spatial network models by first embedding nodes in Euclidean space and then modifying the models so that progressively longer edges occur with progressively smaller probabilities. We start by extending a geographical fitness model by employing Gaussian-distributed fitnesses, and we then develop spatial versions of preferential attachment and configuration models. We define a notion of "spatial strength centrality" to help characterize how strongly a spatial embedding affects network structure, and we examine spatial strength centrality on a variety of real and synthetic networks.

Intransitive Dice

We consider $n$-sided dice whose face values lie between $1$ and $n$ and whose faces sum to $n(n+1)/2$. For two dice $A$ and $B$, define $A \succ B$ if it is more likely for $A$ to show a higher face than $B$. Suppose $k$ such dice $A_1,\dots,A_k$ are randomly selected. We conjecture that the probability of ties goes to 0 as $n$ grows. We conjecture and provide some supporting evidence that---contrary to intuition---each of the $2^{k \choose 2}$ assignments of $\succ$ or $\prec$ to each pair is equally likely asymptotically. For a specific example, suppose we randomly select $k$ dice $A_1,\dots,A_k$ and observe that $A_1 \succ A_2 \succ \ldots \succ A_k$. Then our conjecture asserts that the outcomes $A_k \succ A_1$ and $A_1 \prec A_k$ both have probability approaching $1/2$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$.
