Equivariant geometry of odd-dimensional complete intersections of two quadrics

Fix a finite group $G$. We seek to classify varieties with $G$-action equivariantly birational to a representation of $G$ on affine or projective space. Our focus is odd-dimensional smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, relating the equivariant rationality problem with analogous Diophantine questions over nonclosed fields. We explore how invariants -- both classical cohomological invariants and recent symbol constructions -- control rationality in some cases.

Reduction of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces, rationality and derived equivalence

We consider the reduction of Brauer classes on surfaces over number fields, with a view toward applications to rationality and derived equivalence. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial upon reduction for a set of places of positive natural density. As a consequence, there are cubic fourfolds which become rational upon reduction for a positive proportion of places, and there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent upon reduction for a positive proportion of places.

Balanced line bundles and equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces

Manin's conjecture predicts an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on a smooth projective variety in terms of its global geometric invariants. The strongest form of the conjecture implies certain inequalities among geometric invariants of the variety and of its subvarieties. We provide a general geometric framework explaining these phenomena, via the notion of balanced line bundles, and prove the required inequalities for a large class of equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces.

Embedding pointed curves in K3 surfaces

We analyze morphisms from pointed curves to K3 surfaces with a distinguished rational curve, such that the marked points are taken to the rational curve, perhaps with specified cross ratios. This builds on work of Mukai and others characterizing embeddings of curves into K3 surfaces via non-abelian Brill-Noether theory. Our study leads naturally to enumerative problems, which we solve in several specific cases. These have applications to the existence of sections of del Pezzo fibrations with prescribed invariants.

Quartic del Pezzo surfaces over function fields of curves

We classify quartic del Pezzo surface fibrations over the projective line via numerical invariants, giving explicit examples for small values of the invariants. For generic such fibrations, we describe explicitly the geometry of spaces of sections to the fibration, and mappings to the intermediate Jacobian of the total space. We exhibit examples where these are birational, which has applications to arithmetic questions, especially over finite fields.

Failure of the Hasse principle on general K3 surfaces

We show that transcendental elements of the Brauer group of an algebraic surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We construct a general K3 surface X of degree 2 over Q, together with a two-torsion Brauer class A that is unramified at every finite prime, but ramifies at real points of X. Motivated by Hodge theory, the pair (X,A) is constructed from a double cover of P^2 x P^2 ramified over a hypersurface of bi-degree (2,2).

Spaces of sections of quadric surface fibrations over curves

We consider quadric surface fibrations over curves, defined over algebraically closed and finite fields. Our goal is to understand, in geometric terms, spaces of sections for such fibrations. We analyze varieties of maximal isotropic subspaces in the fibers as P^1-bundles over the discriminant double cover. When the P^1-bundle is suitably stable, we deduce effective estimates for the heights of sections over finite fields satisfying various approximation conditions. We also discuss the behavior of the spaces of sections as the base of the fibration acquires singularities.

Characterizing projective spaces on deformations of Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces

We seek to characterize homology classes of Lagrangian projective spaces embedded in irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds, up to the action of the monodromy group. This paper addresses the case of manifolds deformation-equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-three subschemes of a K3 surface. The class of the projective space in the cohomology ring has prescribed intersection properties, which translate into Diophantine equations. Possible homology classes correspond to integral points on an explicit elliptic curve; our proof entails showing that the only such point is two-torsion.

Rational curves on holomorphic symplectic fourfolds

Let F be a polarized irreducible holomorphic symplectic fourfold, deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme parametrizing length-two zero-dimensional subschemes of a K3 surface. The homology group H^2(F,Z) is equipped with an integral symmetric nondegenerate form, the Beauville form. We give precise conjectures for the structure of the cone of effective curves - and by duality - the cone of ample divisors. Formally they are completely analogous to the results known for K3 surfaces, and they are expressed entirely in terms of the integers represented by the Beauville form restricted to Pic(F). We prove that these conjectures are true in an open subset of the moduli space using deformation theory. The Fano variety of lines contained in a cubic fourfold is an example of a holomorphic symplectic fourfold. Our conjectures imply many concrete geometric statements about cubic fourfolds which may be verified using projective geometry.
