We construct new invariants of equivariant birational isomorphisms taking values in equivariant Burnside groups.
An equivariant stable birational invariant of an action of a finite group on a smooth projective variety is the first cohomology group of the Picard module. Bogomolov-Prokhorov and Shinder computed this for actions of cyclic groups on rational surfaces, with maximal stabilizers, in terms of the geometry of the fixed point locus. Using the Brauer group of the quotient stack, we extend the computation to more general actions and relate it to the equivariant Burnside group formalism.
We introduce equivariant Burnside groups, new invariants in equivariant birational geometry, generalizing birational symbols groups for actions of finite abelian groups, due to Kontsevich, Pestun, and the second author, and study their properties. We establish a specialization map for the equivariant birational type of a smooth algebraic variety with an action of a finite group.
We prove a conjecture of Knutson asserting that the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology ring of a two-step flag variety are equal to the number of puzzles with specified border labels that can be created using a list of eight puzzle pieces. As a consequence, we obtain a puzzle formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants defining the small quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmann variety of type A. The proof of the conjecture proceeds by showing that the puzzle formula defines an associative product on the cohomology ring of the two-step flag variety. It is based on an explicit bijection of gashed puzzles that is analogous to the jeu de taquin algorithm but more complicated.
We prove that given any $n$-pointed prestable curve $C$ of genus $g$ with linearly reductive automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(C)$, there exists an ${\rm Aut}(C)$-equivariant miniversal deformation of $C$ over an affine variety $W$. In other words, we prove that the algebraic stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ parametrizing $n$-pointed prestable curves of genus $g$ has an étale neighborhood of $[C]$ isomorphic to the quotient stack $[W / {\rm Aut}(C)]$.
We study stable rationality properties of conic bundles over rational surfaces.
We study irreducibility of families of degree 4 Del Pezzo surface fibrations over curves.
Let X be an orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in an even dimensional vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the singular and quantum cohomology ring of X as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. Our analysis reveals a surprising relation between the Schubert calculus on even and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. We also study eta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X.
Using the Kuga-Satake correspondence we provide an effective algorithm for the computation of the Picard and Brauer groups of K3 surfaces of degree 2 over number fields.
We construct a new compactification of the moduli space of maps from pointed nonsingular projective stable curves to a nonsingular projective variety with prescribed ramification indices at the points. It is shown to be a proper Deligne-Mumford stack equipped with a natural virtual fundamental class.
Let X be a symplectic or odd orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in a vector space equipped with a nondegenerate (skew) symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in H^*(X,Z) as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. We study theta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X. Furthermore, we prove that theta polynomials are special cases of Billey-Haiman Schubert polynomials and use this connection to express the former as positive linear combinations of products of Schur Q-functions and S-polynomials.
We study Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and to weak approximation on algebraic surfaces over number fields.
We study the three point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants on the Grassmannians which parametrize non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric form. We establish Pieri rules for the classical cohomology and the small quantum cohomology ring of these varieties, which give a combinatorial formula for the product of any Schubert class with certain special Schubert classes. We also give presentations of these rings, with integer coefficients, in terms of special Schubert class generators and relations.
We formulate a nonrecursive combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of [Fomin-Kirillov '94] in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions. This gives a common generalization, as well as new proofs of the rule of [Fomin-Greene '98] for the expansion of the stable Schubert polynomials into Schur polynomials, and the K-theoretic Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule of [Buch '02]. The proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted and Edelman-Greene insertion algorithms. Our results are applied to prove a number of new formulas and properties for K-theoretic quiver polynomials, and the Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82]. In particular, we provide the first $K$-theoretic analogue of the factor sequence formula of [Buch-Fulton '99] for the cohomological quiver polynomials.
Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials give cohomology formulas for a class of degeneracy loci, which generalize Schubert varieties. The K-theoretic quiver formula of Buch expresses the structure sheaves of these loci as integral linear combinations of products of stable Grothendieck polynomials. We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the coefficients, which shows that they have alternating signs. Our result is applied to obtain new expansions for the Grothendieck polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.
This paper proves a result on the existence of finite flat scheme covers of Deligne-Mumford stacks. This result is used to prove that a large class of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with affine moduli space are quotient stacks, and in the case of quasi-projective moduli space, to reduce the question to one concerning Brauer groups of schemes.
We consider the operation of intersecting with a locally principal Cartier divisor (i.e., a Cartier divisor which is principal on some neighborhood of its support). We describe this operation explicitly on the level of cycles and rational equivalences and as a corollary obtain a formula for rational equivalence between intersections of two locally principal Cartier divisors. Such canonical rational equivalence applies quite naturally to the setting of algebraic stacks. We present two applications: (i) a simplification of the development of Fulton-MacPherson-style intersection theory on Deligne-Mumford stacks, and (ii) invariance of a key rational equivalence under a certain group action (which is used in developing the theory of virtual fundamental classes via intrinsic normal cones).
