Local correlations in dual-unitary kicked chains

We show that for dual-unitary kicked chains, built upon a pair of complex Hadamard matrices, correlators of strictly local, traceless operators vanish identically for sufficiently long chains. On the other hand, operators supported at pairs of adjacent chain sites, generically, exhibit nontrivial correlations along the light cone edges. In agreement with Bertini et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 210601 (2019)], they can be expressed through the expectation values of a transfer matrix $T$. Furthermore, we identify a remarkable family of dual-unitary models where an explicit information on the spectrum of $T$ is available. For this class of models we provide a closed analytical formula for the corresponding two-point correlators. This result, in turn, allows an evaluation of local correlators in the vicinity of the dual-unitary regime which is exemplified on the kicked Ising spin chain.

Transition from Quantum Chaos to Localization in Spin Chains

Recent years have seen an increasing interest in quantum chaos and related aspects of spatially extended systems, such as spin chains. However, the results are strongly system dependent, generic approaches suggest the presence of many-body localization while analytical calculations for certain system classes, here referred to as the ``self-dual case'', prove adherence to universal (chaotic) spectral behavior. We address these issues studying the level statistics in the vicinity of the latter case, thereby revealing transitions to many-body localization as well as the appearance of several non-standard random-matrix universality classes.

Role of NMDA conductance in average firing rate shifts caused by external periodic forcing

A widely accepted view of computations in the brain relies on population coding, where the neural ensemble firing rate is modulated in a stable manner to transmit information and perform various cognitive tasks. At the same time, oscillatory neural activity is specifically modulated in frequency, coherence and power during cognitive performance. How the firing rate and oscillations interact remains a salient question. In this paper, we develop a theory for the interactions between oscillatory signals and the firing rate of neural populations based on activity of non-linear voltage-dependent NMDA synapses. Notably, we show under which conditions oscillatory inputs can control the mean firing rate without loss of stability. Using mathematical analysis and simulations of mean-field models, we demonstrate that presence of NMDA synapses on both the excitatory and the inhibitory neurons is critical for sinusoidal oscillations to significantly and stably increase the firing rate. We characterize the oscillation-induced mean firing rate shift as a function of the fast and slow synaptic weights and demonstrate the parameter region, in which the effect under investigation is mostly pronounced. Results of our work may help identify the properties of neural circuits that allow for constructive control of the firing rate codes by large-scale neural oscillations.

Spreading in Integrable and Non--integrable Many--body Systems

We consider a finite, closed and selfbound many--body system in which a collective degree of freedom is excited. The redistribution of energy and momentum into a finite number of the non-collective degrees of freedom is referred to as spreading as opposed to damping in open systems. Spreading closely relates to thermalization, but while thermalization requires non-integrability, spreading can also present in integrable systems. We identify subtle features which determine the onset of spreading in an integrable model and compare the result with a non--integrable case.

Classical foundations of many-particle quantum chaos

In the framework of semiclassical theory the universal properties of quantum systems with classically chaotic dynamics can be accounted for through correlations between partner periodic orbits with small action differences. So far, however, the scope of this approach has been mainly limited to systems of a few particles with low-dimensional phase spaces. In the present work we consider N-particle chaotic systems with local homogeneous interactions, where N is not necessarily small. Based on a model of coupled cat maps we demonstrate emergence of a new mechanism for correlation between periodic orbit actions. In particular, we show the existence of partner orbits which are specific to many-particle systems. For a sufficiently large N these new partners dominate the spectrum of correlating periodic orbits and seem to be necessary for construction of a consistent many-particle semiclassical theory.

Spectral statistics of nearly unidirectional quantum graphs

The energy levels of a quantum graph with time reversal symmetry and unidirectional classical dynamics are doubly degenerate and obey the spectral statistics of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. These degeneracies, however, are lifted when the unidirectionality is broken in one of the graph's vertices by a singular perturbation. Based on a Random Matrix model we derive an analytic expression for the nearest neighbour distribution between energy levels of such systems. As we demonstrate the result agrees excellently with the actual statistics for graphs with a uniform distribution of eigenfunctions. Yet, it exhibits quite substantial deviations for classes of graphs which show strong scarring.

Clustering of periodic orbits and ensembles of truncated unitary matrices

Periodic orbits in chaotic systems form clusters, whose elements traverse approximately the same points of the phase space. The distribution of cluster sizes depends on the length n of orbits and the parameter p which controls closeness of orbits actions. We show that counting of cluster sizes in the baker's map can be turned into a spectral problem for an ensemble of truncated unitary matrices. Based on the conjecture of the universality for the eigenvalues distribution at the spectral edge of these ensembles, we obtain asymptotics of the second moment of cluster distribution in a regime where both n and p tend to infinity. This result allows us to estimate the average cluster size as a function of the number of encounters in periodic orbits.

Universality in spectral statistics of "open" quantum graphs

The unitary evolution maps in closed chaotic quantum graphs are known to have universal spectral correlations, as predicted by random matrix theory. In chaotic graphs with absorption the quantum maps become non-unitary. We show that their spectral statistics exhibit universality at the "soft" edges of the spectrum. The same spectral behavior is observed in many classical non-unitary ensembles of random matrices with rotationally invariant measures.

Counting of Sieber-Richter pairs of periodic orbits

In the framework of the semiclassical approach the universal spectral correlations in the Hamiltonian systems with classical chaotic dynamics can be attributed to the systematic correlations between actions of periodic orbits which (up to the switch in the momentum direction) pass through approximately the same points of the phase space. By considering symbolic dynamics of the system one can introduce a natural ultrametric distance between periodic orbits and organize them into clusters. Each cluster consists of orbits approaching closely each other in the phase space. We study the distribution of cluster sizes for the backer's map in the asymptotic limit of long trajectories. This problem is equivalent to the one of counting degeneracies in the length spectrum of the {\it de Bruijn} graphs. Based on this fact, we derive the probability $¶_k$ that $k$ randomly chosen periodic orbits belong to the same cluster. Furthermore, we find asymptotic behaviour of the largest cluster size $|\Cll_{\max}|$ and derive the probability $P(t)$ that a random periodic orbit belongs to a cluster of the size smaller than $t|\Cll_{\max}|$, $t\in[0,1]$.

Collective versus Single--Particle Motion in Quantum Many--Body Systems: Spreading and its Semiclassical Interpretation

We study the interplay between collective and incoherent single-particle motion in a model of two chains of particles whose interaction comprises a non-integrable part. In the perturbative regime, but for a general form of the interaction, we calculate the spectral density for collective excitations. We obtain the remarkable result that it always has a unique semiclassical interpretation. We show this by a proper renormalization procedure which allows us to map our system to a Caldeira-Leggett--type of model in which the bath is part of the system.

Spectral Statistics of "Cellular" Billiards

For a bounded planar domain $Ω^0$ whose boundary contains a number of flat pieces $Γ_i$ we consider a family of non-symmetric billiards $Ω$ constructed by patching several copies of $Ω^0$ along $Γ_i$'s. It is demonstrated that the length spectrum of the periodic orbits in $Ω$ is degenerate with the multiplicities determined by a matrix group $G$. We study the energy spectrum of the corresponding quantum billiard problem in $Ω$ and show that it can be split in a number of uncorrelated subspectra corresponding to a set of irreducible representations $α$ of $G$. Assuming that the classical dynamics in $Ω^0$ are chaotic, we derive a semiclassical trace formula for each spectral component and show that their energy level statistics are the same as in standard Random Matrix ensembles. Depending on whether $α$ is real, pseudo-real or complex, the spectrum has either Gaussian Orthogonal, Gaussian Symplectic or Gaussian Unitary types of statistics, respectively.

Quantum Corrections to Fidelity Decay in Chaotic Systems

By considering correlations between classical orbits we derive semiclassical expressions for the decay of the quantum fidelity amplitude for classically chaotic quantum systems, as well as for its squared modulus, the fidelity or Loschmidt echo. Our semiclassical results for the fidelity amplitude agree with random matrix theory (RMT) and supersymmetry predictions in the universal Fermi golden rule regime. The calculated quantum corrections can be viewed as arising from a static random perturbation acting on nearly self-retracing interfering paths, and hence will be suppressed for time-varying perturbations. Moreover, using trajectory-based methods we show a relation, recently obtained in RMT, between the fidelity amplitude and the cross-form factor for parametric level correlations. Beyond RMT, we compute Ehrenfest-time effects on the fidelity amplitude. Furthermore our semiclassical approach allows for a unified treatment of the fidelity, both in the Fermi golden rule and Lyapunov regimes, demonstrating that quantum corrections are suppressed in the latter.

Entropic bounds on semiclassical measures for quantized one-dimensional maps

Quantum ergodicity asserts that almost all infinite sequences of eigenstates of a quantized ergodic system are equidistributed in the phase space. On the other hand, there are might exist exceptional sequences which converge to different (non-Liouville) classical invariant measures. By the remarkable result of N. Anantharaman and S. Nonnenmacher math-ph/0610019, arXiv:0704.1564 (with H. Koch), for Anosov geodesic flows the metric entropy of any semiclassical measure must be bounded from below. The result seems to be optimal for uniformly expanding systems, but not in general case, where it might become even trivial if the curvature of the Riemannian manifold is strongly non-uniform. It has been conjectured by the same authors, that in fact, a stronger bound (valid in general case) should hold. In the present work we consider such entropic bounds using the model of quantized one-dimensional maps. For a certain class of non-uniformly expanding maps we prove Anantharaman-Nonnenmacher conjecture. Furthermore, for these maps we are able to construct some explicit sequences of eigenstates which saturate the bound. This demonstrates that the conjectured bound is actually optimal in that case.
