Extreme eigenvalues and the emerging outlier in rank-one non-Hermitian deformations of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

Complex eigenvalues of random matrices $J=\text{GUE }+ iγ\diag (1, 0, \ldots, 0)$ provide the simplest model for studying resonances in wave scattering from a quantum chaotic system via a single open channel. It is known that in the limit of large matrix dimensions $N\gg 1$ the eigenvalue density of $J$ undergoes an abrupt restructuring at $γ= 1$, the critical threshold beyond which a single eigenvalue outlier (``broad resonance'') appears. We provide a detailed description of this restructuring transition, including the scaling with $N$ of the width of the critical region about the outlier threshold $γ=1$ and the associated scaling for the real parts (``resonance positions'') and imaginary parts (``resonance widths'') of the eigenvalues which are farthest away from the real axis. In the critical regime we determine the density of such extreme eigenvalues, and show how the outlier gradually separates itself from the rest of the extreme eigenvalues. Finally, we describe the fluctuations in the height of the eigenvalue outlier for large but finite $N$ in terms of the associated large deviation function.

Glass--like transition described by toppling of stability hierarchy

Building on the work of Fyodorov (2004) and Fyodorov and Nadal (2012) we examine the critical behaviour of population of saddles with fixed instability index $k$ in high dimensional random energy landscapes. Such landscapes consist of a parabolic confining potential and a random part in $N\gg 1$ dimensions. When the relative strength $m$ of the parabolic part is decreasing below a critical value $m_c$, the random energy landscapes exhibit a glass-like transition from a simple phase with very few critical points to a complex phase with the energy surface having exponentially many critical points. We obtain the annealed probability distribution of the instability index $k$ by working out the mean size of the population of saddles with index $k$ relative to the mean size of the entire population of critical points and observe toppling of stability hierarchy which accompanies the underlying glass-like transition. In the transition region $m=m_c + δN^{-1/2}$ the typical instability index scales as $k = κN^{1/4}$ and the toppling mechanism affects whole instability index distribution, in particular the most probable value of $κ$ changes from $κ= 0$ in the simple phase ($δ> 0 $) to a non-zero value $ κ_{\max} \propto (-δ)^{3/2}$ in the complex phase ($δ< 0$). We also show that a similar phenomenon is observed in random landscapes with an additional fixed energy constraint and in the $p$-spin spherical model.

Nonlinear Analogue of the May-Wigner Instability Transition

We study a system of $N\gg 1$ degrees of freedom coupled via a smooth homogeneous Gaussian vector field with both gradient and divergence-free components. In the absence of coupling, the system is exponentially relaxing to an equilibrium with rate $μ$. We show that, while increasing the ratio of the coupling strength to the relaxation rate, the system experiences an abrupt transition from a topologically trivial phase portrait with a single equilibrium into a topologically non-trivial regime characterised by an exponential number of equilibria, the vast majority of which are expected to be unstable. It is suggested that this picture provides a global view on the nature of the May-Wigner instability transition originally discovered by local linear stability analysis.

Truncations of Random Orthogonal Matrices

Statistical properties of non--symmetric real random matrices of size $M$, obtained as truncations of random orthogonal $N\times N$ matrices are investigated. We derive an exact formula for the density of eigenvalues which consists of two components: finite fraction of eigenvalues are real, while the remaining part of the spectrum is located inside the unit disk symmetrically with respect to the real axis. In the case of strong non--orthogonality, $M/N=$const, the behavior typical to real Ginibre ensemble is found. In the case $M=N-L$ with fixed $L$, a universal distribution of resonance widths is recovered.

Almost-Hermitian Random Matrices: Crossover from Wigner-Dyson to Ginibre eigenvalue statistics

By using the method of orthogonal polynomials we analyze the statistical properties of complex eigenvalues of random matrices describing a crossover from Hermitian matrices characterized by the Wigner- Dyson statistics of real eigenvalues to strongly non-Hermitian ones whose complex eigenvalues were studied by Ginibre. Two-point statistical measures (as e.g. spectral form factor, number variance and small distance behavior of the nearest neighbor distance distribution $p(s)$) are studied in more detail. In particular, we found that the latter function may exhibit unusual behavior $p(s)\propto s^{5/2}$ for some parameter values.

Almost-Hermitian Random Matrices: Eigenvalue Density in the Complex Plane

We consider an ensemble of large non-Hermitian random matrices of the form $\hat{H}+i\hat{A}_s$, where $\hat{H}$ and $\hat{A}_s$ are Hermitian statistically independent random $N\times N$ matrices. We demonstrate the existence of a new nontrivial regime of weak non-Hermiticity characterized by the condition that the average of $N\mbox{Tr} \hat{A}_s^2$ is of the same order as that of $\mbox{Tr} \hat{H}^2 $ when $N\to \infty$. We find explicitly the density of complex eigenvalues for this regime in the limit of infinite matrix dimension. The density determines the eigenvalue distribution in the crossover regime between random Hermitian matrices whose real eigenvalues are distributed according to the Wigner semi-circle law and random complex matrices whose eigenvalues are distributed in the complex plane according to the so-called ``elliptic law''.
