Observation of concentrating paraxial beams

We report,to the best of our knowledge, the first observation of concentrating paraxial beams of light in a linear nondispersive medium. We have generated this intriguing class of light beams, recently predicted by one of us, in both one- and two-dimensional configurations. As we demonstrate in our experiments, these concentrating beams display unconventional features, such as the ability to strongly focus in the focal spot of a thin lens like a plane wave, while keeping their total energy finite.

Achieving quantum-limited optical resolution

We establish a simple method to assess the quantum Fisher information required for resolving two incoherent point sources with an imaging system. The resulting Cramér-Rao bound shows that the standard Rayleigh limit can be surpassed by suitable coherent measurements. We explicitly find these optimal strategies and present a realization for Gaussian and slit apertures. This involves a projection onto the optimal bases that is accomplished with digital holographic techniques and is compared with a CCD position measurement. Our experimental results unequivocally confirm unprecedented sub-Rayleigh precision.

Incomplete quantum state estimation: a comprehensive study

We present a detailed account of quantum state estimation by joint maximization of the likelihood and the entropy. After establishing the algorithms for both perfect and imperfect measurements, we apply the procedure to data from simulated and actual experiments. We demonstrate that the realistic situation of incomplete data from imperfect measurements can be handled successfully.
