Pressure induced isostructural phase transition in biskyrmion host hexagonal MnNiGa

Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like spin textures, which can be manipulated by external stress or pressure via magnetoelastic effects. Here, we present the observation of isostructural phase transition in a biskyrmion host hexagonal MnNiGa at a pressure around 4 GPa using pressure-dependent synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data analysis. Our XRD data reveals anisotropic compression behavior with pressure with different compression rates of the a-axis in the basal plane and the c-axis in the prismatic plane. However, the hexagonal symmetry remains unchanged for pressure up to 14 GPa. Fitting of unit cell volume with pressure using a second-order Birch-Murnagan equation of state reveals that the data to fall into two distinct curves for those above and below 4 GPa. The present study contributes to the understanding of crystal structure with the application of hydrostatic pressure in the biskyrmion host MnNiGa, wherein the skyrmion textures can be manipulated by pressure due to their magnetoelastic character.

Pressure-enhanced superconductivity in cage-type quasiskutterudite Sc5Rh6Sn18 single crystal

Sc5Rh6Sn18 with a cage-type quasiskutterudite crystal lattice and type II superconductivity, with superconducting transition temperature Tc = 4.99 K, was investigated under hydrostatic high-pressure (HP) using electrical transport, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Our data show that HP enhance the metallic nature and Tc of the system. Tc is found to show a continuous increase reaching to 5.24 K at 2.5 GPa. Athough the system is metallic in nature, Raman spectroscopy investigations at ambient pressure revealed the presence of three weak modes at 165.97, 219.86 and 230.35 cm-1, mostly related to the rattling atom Sc. The HP-XRD data revealed that the cage structure was stable without any structural phase transition up to ~7 GPa. The lattice parameters and volume exhibited a smooth decrease without any anomalies as a function of pressure in this pressure range. In particular, a second order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state can describe the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume well, yielding a bulk modulus of ~ 97 GPa. HP Raman investigations revealed a linear shift of all the three Raman modes to higher wavenumbers with increasing pressure up to ~8 GPa. As the pressure enhances the bond overlap, thus inducing more electronic charges into the system, HP-XRD and Raman results may indciate the possibility of obtaining higher Tc with increasing pressures in this pressure range.

Fe-As bond fluctuations in a double-well potential in LaFeAsO

While for a long time iron based superconductors have been investigated looking at the average crystalline structure there is now growing interest on the divergence of local from the average structure. Here we use advanced data analysis of EXAFS, a fast and local probe, which has key advantages compared to crystallographic measurements, in unveiling the dynamics of the local structure. The results show that the Fe-As pair oscillates in the double-well potential both in undoped and in cobalt doped LaFeAsO crystals. The parameters and the characteristics of the double-well potential are determined by curve fits of the polarized EXAFS data. Temperature dependent Fe-As pair distribution and tunneling frequency are derived from selected model of two potential wells. We observe the softening of the Fe-As oscillations at the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition at 150 K in LaFeAsO. A weak broad softening is observed while decreasing the temperature from 70 to 40 K in superconducting LaFe0.89Co0.11AsO which could be correlated with the onset of short range charge density wave order.

Temperature dependent As K-edge EXAFS studies of LaFe1-xCoxAsO (x = 0.0 and 0.11) single crystals

We report the experimental results of temperature dependent polarized As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of LaFe1-xCoxAsO (x=0.0 and 0.11) single-crystals. By aligning the Fe-As bond direction in the direction of the x-ray beam polarization we have been able to identify an anomaly in the Fe-As bond correlations at the tetragonal to orthorhombic transition at 150K, while previous investigations with standard unpolarized EXAFS of undoped LaFeAsO powder samples were not able to detect any such anomaly. Using our approach we have been able to identify in the superconducting doped sample, LaFe0.89Co0.11AsO, a broad anomaly around 60 K. The low temperature anomaly has good correlations with the temperature dependence of several properties like resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, linear thermal expansion, etc indicating the emergence of the dynamical oscillations of the Fe - As pairs

Role of the Ce valence in the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$, in which the superconductivity of the BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetism of the CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer are induced by the F-doping, in order to investigate the impact of the F-doping on the local electronic and lattice structures. The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-doping and completely disappears for $x>0.4$ where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-doping appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer.

Temperature dependent local atomic displacements in Ru substituted SmFe_{1-x}Ru_{x}AsO_{0.85}F_{0.15} superconductors

Local structure of SmFe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.05, 0.25 and 0.5) superconductors has been investigated by temperature dependent As $K$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure. The effect of Ru substitution remains confined to the iron-arsenide layer but neither the static disorder nor the Fe-As bond strength suffers any change for $x \le$ 0.25. With further Ru substitution the static disorder increases while the Fe-As bond strength remains unchanged. Also, the Ru-As distance ($\sim$2.42 Å), different from the Fe-As distance ($\sim$2.39 Å), does not show any change in its force constant with the Ru substitution. These observations suggest that the SmFe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ system breaks down to coexisting local electronic phases on isoelectric substitution in the active FeAs layer.

Transmittance and reflectance measurements at terahertz frequencies on a superconducting BaFe_{1.84}Co_{0.16}As_2 ultrathin film: an analysis of the optical gaps in the Co-doped BaFe_2As_2 pnictide

Here we report an optical investigation in the terahertz region of a 40 nm ultrathin BaFe$_{1.84}$Co$_{0.16}$As$_2$ superconducting film with superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ = 17.5 K. A detailed analysis of the combined reflectance and transmittance measurements showed that the optical properties of the superconducting system can be described in terms of a two-band, two-gap model. The zero temperature value of the large gap $Δ_B$, which seems to follow a BCS-like behavior, results to be $Δ_B$(0) = 17 cm$^{-1}$. For the small gap, for which $Δ_A$(0) = 8 cm$^{-1}$, the temperature dependence cannot be clearly established. These gap values and those reported in the literature for the BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_2$ system by using infrared spectroscopy, when put together as a function of T$_c$, show a tendency to cluster along two main curves, providing a unified perspective of the measured optical gaps. Below a temperature around 20 K, the gap-sizes as a function of T$_c$ seem to have a BCS-like linear behavior, but with different slopes. Above this temperature, both gaps show different supra-linear behaviors.

Anisotropic compression in the high pressure regime of pure and Cr-doped vanadium dioxide

We present structural studies of V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_2$ (pure, 0.7% and 2.5% Cr doped) compounds at room temperature in a diamond anvil cell for pressures up to 20 GPa using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. All the samples studied show a persistence of the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry between 4 and 12 GPa. Above 12 GPa, the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry changes to isostructural $M_x$ phase (space group $P2_1/c$) with a significant anisotropy in lattice compression of the $b$-$c$ plane of the $M_{1}$ phase. This behavior can be reconciled invoking the pressure induced charge-delocalization.

Large local disorder in the superconducting K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2} studied by extended x-ray absorption fine structure

We have measured local structure of superconducting K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2} chalcogenide (T_{c}=31.8 K) by temperature dependent polarized extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Fe and Se K-edges. We find that the system is characterized by a large local disorder. The Fe-Se and Fe-Fe distances are found to be shorter than the distances measured by diffraction, while the corresponding mean square relative displacements reveal large Fe-site disorder and relatively large c-axis disorder. The local force constant for Fe-Se bondlength (k ~ 5.8 eV/Å^{2}) is similar to the one found in the binary FeSe superconductor, however, the Fe-Fe bondlength appears to get flexible (k ~ 2.1 eV/Å^{2}) in comparison to the binary FeSe (k ~ 3.5 eV/Å^{2}), an indication of partly relaxed Fe-Fe networks in K_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Se_{2}. The results suggest glassy nature of the title system, with the superconductivity being similar to the one in the granular materials.

Intrinsic phase separation in superconducting K0.8Fe1.6Se2 (Tc= 31.8 K) single crystals

Temperature dependent single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) in transmission mode probing the bulk of the newly discovered K0.8Fe1.6Se2 superconductor (Tc = 31.8 K) using synchrotron radiation is reported. A clear evidence of intrinsic phase separation at 520 K between two competing phases, (i) a first majority magnetic phase with a ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal lattice modulated by the iron vacancy ordering and (ii) a minority non-magnetic phase having an in-plane compressed lattice volume and a weak superstructure, is reported. The XRD peaks due to the Fe vacancy ordering in the majority phase disappear by increasing the temperature at 580 K, well above phase separation temperature confirming the order-disorder phase transition. The intrinsic phase separation at 520K between a competing first magnetic phase and a second non-magnetic phase in the normal phase both having lattice superstructures (that imply different Fermi surface topology reconstruction and charge density) is assigned to a lattice-electronic instability of the K0.8Fe1.6Se2 system typical of a system tuned at a Lifshitz critical point of an electronic topological transition that gives a multi-gaps superconductor tuned a shape resonance.

Temperature dependent local structure of NdFeAsO1-xFx system using arsenic K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure

Local structure of NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ ($x$=0.0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.18) high temperature iron pnictide superconductor system is studied using arsenic $K$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements as a function of temperature. Fe-As bondlength shows only a weak temperature and F-substitution dependence, consistent with the strong covalent nature of this bond. The temperature dependence of the mean-square relative-displacements of the Fe-As bondlength are well described by the correlated-Einstein model for all the samples, but with different Einstein-temperatures for the superconducting and non-superconducting samples. The results indicate distinct local Fe-As lattice dynamics in the superconducting and non-superconducting iron-pnictide systems.
