Emergent anisotropy in magnetic metamaterials

We demonstrate directional dependence of the self-modification of internal mesospin textures in magnetic metamaterials, arising from the coupling of the atomic- and mesoscopic length-scales. Dressing the mesospins in different directions enables the quantification of the degree of texture in the internal magnetization and its impact on the interaction energy of the mesospins. The emerging anisotropy is manifested in a directional dependence of the remanent magnetization with temperature.

Steering light with magnetic textures

We study the steering of visible light using a combination of magneto-optical effects and the reconfigurability of magnetic domains in Yttrium-Iron Garnet films. The spontaneously formed stripe domains are used as a field-controlled optical grating, allowing for active spatiotemporal control of light. We discuss the basic ideas behind the approach and provide a quantitative description of the field dependence of the obtained light patterns. Finally, we calculate and experimentally verify the efficiency of our magneto-optical grating.

Texture fluctuations and emergent dynamics in coupled nanomagnets

We analyse the thermal fluctuations of magnetization textures in two stray field coupled elements, forming mesospins. To this end, the energy landscape associated with the thermal dynamics of the textures is mapped out and asymmetric energy barriers are identified. These barriers are modified by changing the gap that separates the mesospins. Moreover, the coupling between the edges leads to an anisotropy in the curvature of the energy surface at the metastable minima. This yields a dynamic mode splitting of the edge modes and affects the attempt switching frequencies. Thus, we elucidate the mechanism with which the magnons in the thermal bath generate the stochastic fluctuations of the magnetization at the edges.

Collective magnetic dynamics in artificial spin ice probed by AC susceptibility

We report on the study of the thermal dynamics of square artificial spin ice, probed by means of temperature and frequency dependent AC susceptibility. Pronounced influence of the inter-island coupling strength was found on the frequency response of the samples. Through the subsequent analysis of the frequency- and coupling-dependent freezing temperatures, we discuss the phenomenological parameters obtained in the framework of Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law in terms of the samples microscopic features. The high sensitivity and robust signal to noise ratio of AC susceptibility validates the latter as a promising and simple experimental technique for resolving the dynamics and temperature driven dynamics crossovers for the case of artificial spin ice.

The impact of nanoscale compositional variation on the properties of amorphous alloys

The atomic distribution in amorphous FeZr alloys is found to be close to random, nevertheless, the composition can not be viewed as being homogenous at the nm-scale. The spatial variation of the local composition is identified as the root of the unusual magnetic properties in amorphous Fe$_{1-x}$Zr$_{x}$ alloys. The findings are discussed and generalised with respect to the physical properties of amorphous and crystalline materials.

Enabling atomic resolution in convergent beam EMCD measurements by the use of patterned apertures

We give an experimental demonstration of two types of recently proposed ventilator apertures which can be used to acquire electron magnetic circular dichroic (EMCD) signals in zone axis orientation with high spatial resolution. To simplify the experimental procedures, we propose a third type of aperture and experimentally demonstrate the use of this modified ventilator aperture for the case of multiple symmetries in the diffraction patterns. To show the feasibility of the atomic resolution EMCD, EMCD signals are acquired for a range of beam convergence angles. High quality EMCD signals with convergence angles corresponding to atomic resolution electron probes are obtained.

A new look on the two-dimensional Ising model: thermal artificial spins

We present a direct experimental investigation of the thermal ordering in an artificial analogue of an asymmetric two dimensional Ising system composed of a rectangular array of nano-fabricated magnetostatically interacting islands. During fabrication and below a critical thickness of the magnetic material the islands are thermally fluctuating and thus the system is able to explore its phase space. Above the critical thickness the islands freeze-in resulting in an arrested thermalized state for the array. Determining the magnetic state of the array we demonstrate a genuine artificial two-dimensional Ising system which can be analyzed in the context of nearest neighbour interactions.

Quantitative analysis of magnetic spin and orbital moments from an oxidized iron (1 1 0) surface using electron magnetic circular dichroism

Understanding the ramifications of reduced crystalline symmetry on magnetic behavior is a critical step in improving our understanding of nanoscale and interfacial magnetism. However, investigations of such effects are often controversial largely due to the challenges inherent in directly correlating nanoscale stoichiometry and structure to magnetic behavior. Here, we describe how to use Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to obtain Electron Magnetic Circular Dichroism (EMCD) signals as a function of scattering angle to locally probe the magnetic behavior of thin oxide layers grown on an Fe (1 1 0) surface. Experiments and simulations both reveal a strong dependence of the magnetic orbital to spin ratio on its scattering vector in reciprocal space. We exploit this variation to extract the magnetic properties of the oxide cladding layer, showing that it locally may exhibit an enhanced orbital to spin moment ratio. This finding is supported here by both spatially and angularly resolved EMCD measurements, opening up the way for compelling investigations into how magnetic properties are affected by nanoscale features.

Effect of uniaxial strain on the site occupancy of hydrogen in vanadium from density-functional calculations

We investigate the influence of uniaxial strain on site occupancy of hydrogen vanadium, using density functional theory. The site occupancy is found to be strongly influenced by the strain state of the lattice. The results provide the conceptual framework of the atomistic description of the observed hysteresis in the alpha to beta phase transition in bulk, as well as the preferred octahedral occupancy of hydrogen in strained V layers.

Hydrogen site occupancy and strength of forces in nano-sized metal hydrides

The dipole force components in nano-sized metal hydrides are quantitatively determined with curvature and x-ray diffraction measurements. Ab-initio density functional theory is used to calculate the dipole components and the symmetry of the strain field. The hydrogen occupancy in a 100 nm thick V film is shown to be tetrahedral with a slight asymmetry at low concentration and a transition to octahedral occupancy is shown to take place at around 0.07 [H/V] at 360 K. When the thickness of the V layer is reduced to 3 nm and biaxially strained, in a Fe_0.5V_0.5/V superlattice, the hydrogen unequivocally occupies octahedral z-like sites, even at and below concentrations of 0.02 [H/V].

Influence of the magnetic field on the plasmonic properties of transparent Ni anti-dot arrays

Extraordinary optical transmission is observed due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in 2-Dimensional hexagonal anti-dot patterns of pure Ni thin films, grown on sapphire substrates. A strong enhancement of the polar Kerr rotation is recorded at the surface plasmon related transmission maximum. Angular resolved reflectivity measurements under an applied field, reveal an enhancement and a shift of the normalized reflectivity difference upon reversal of the magnetic saturation (transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect-TMOKE). The change of the TMOKE signal clearly shows the magnetic field modulation of the dispersion relation of SPPs launched in a 2D patterned ferromagnetic Ni film.

Melting artificial spin ice

Artificial spin ice arrays of micromagnetic islands are a means of engineering additional energy scales and frustration into magnetic materials. Despite much progress in elucidating the properties of such arrays, the `spins' in the systems studied so far have no thermal dynamics as the kinetic constraints are too high. Here we address this problem by using a material with an ordering temperature near room temperature. By measuring the temperature dependent magnetization in different principal directions, and comparing with simulations of idealized statistical mechanical models, we confirm a dynamical `pre-melting' of the artificial spin ice structure at a temperature well below the intrinsic ordering temperature of the island material. We thus create a spin ice array that has real thermal dynamics of the artificial spins over an extended temperature range.

Surface plasmons and magneto-optic activity in hexagonal Ni anti-dot arrays

The influence of surface plasmons on the magneto-optic activity in a two-dimensional hexagonal array is addressed. The experiments were performed using hexagonal array of circular holes in a ferromagnetic Ni film. Well pronounced troughs are observed in the optical reflectivity, resulting from the presence of surface plasmons. The surface plasmons are found to strongly enhance the magneto-optic response (Kerr rotation), as compared to a continuous film of the same composition. The influence of the hexagonal symmetry of the pattern on the coupling between the plasmonic excitations is demonstrated, using optical diffraction measurements and theoretical calculations of the magneto-optic and of the angular dependence of the optical activity.
