Three-nucleon contact forces in the Jacobi partial-wave basis

We construct the three-nucleon contact potentials in the Jacobi partial-wave basis. The potentials are built in the separable form as the products of the antisymmetrized three-nucleon states in which the nucleons are arbitrarily close to each other. We compile the three-nucleon contact potentials up to $\mathcal{O}(Q^2)$. These contact potentials are by construction independent operators under exchanges of any nucleon pairs.

Constructing chiral effective field theory around unnatural leading-order interactions

A momentum-dependent formulation based on a stationary spin-0 and isospin-1 dibaryon field is proposed to improve convergence of chiral effective field theory in the $\cs{1}{0}$ channel of $NN$ scattering. Although the two-parameter leading-order interaction appears to be unnatural, it nevertheless has the necessary features of an effective field theory. A rapid order-by-order convergence is found in $\cs{1}{0}$. As an application beyond the two-body level, the triton binding energy is studied and compared to standard chiral effective field theory with partly perturbative pions. The consistency of the chiral Lagrangian for the new formulation is examined by working out the pionic radiative corrections, and consequences of nontrivial chiral-connection terms are discussed.

Perturbative Calculations of Deuteron Form Factors

We calculate the deuteron charge, electric quadrupole, and magnetic form factors up to next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory, treating subleading corrections, especially that of chiral nuclear forces, in perturbation theory. We examine the power counting based on naive dimensional analysis by investigating the ultraviolet cutoff variation of these form factors. We find that the N${}^2$LO magnetic form factor shows significant cutoff dependence, suggesting the contact current operator responsible be enhanced. After promotion to N${}^2$LO, it indeed renormalizes the magnetic form factor. This is in agreement with a previous work based on renormalization-group analysis. For the charge and quadrupole moments, perturbative calculation allows us to study how they scale with multiple low-energy parameters such as the pion mass, deuteron binding momentum, and momentum transfer.

Renormalization of One-Pion Exchange in Chiral Effective Field Theory for Antinucleon-Nucleon Scattering

The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) is studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($χ$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}\!N$) system. The OPE potential is cut off at a certain distance and contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well with the same radius. We investigate the dependence on the cutoff radius of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the low partial waves in $\overline{N}\!N$ scattering. We show that renormalization requires additional contact interactions compared to the expectation based on naive dimensional analysis. Results after renormalization are compared with the state-of-the-art energy-dependent partial-wave analysis of $\overline{N}\!N$ data. We compare our conclusions with applications of $χ$EFT to the nucleon-nucleon system.

Nuclear reactions in artificial traps

Coupled-channel two-particle systems bound by a harmonic trap are discussed in the present paper. We derive the formula that relates the energy levels of such trapped systems to phase shifts and inelasticity of coupled-channel reactions. The formula makes it possible to extract amplitudes of inelastic nuclear reactions from ab initio calculations of discrete levels of many-nucleon systems in a harmonic trap.

Multi-$π^+$ systems in finite volume

We present a formalism to describe two-$π^+$ and three-$π^+$ dynamics in finite volume, the formalism is based on combination of a variational approach and the Faddeev method. Both pair-wise and three-body interactions are included in the presentation. Impacts of finite lattice spacing and the cubic lattice symmetry are also discussed. To illustrate application of the formalism, the pair-wise contact interaction that resembles the leading order interaction terms in chiral effective theory is used to analyze recent lattice results.

Chiral dynamics of S-wave baryon resonances

As the pion mass approaches a critical value $m_π^\star$ from below, an $S$-wave resonance crosses pion-baryon threshold and becomes a bound state with arbitrarily small binding energy, thus driving the scattering length to diverge. I explore the consequences of chiral symmetry for the values of $m_π$ close to $m_π^\star$. It turns out that chiral symmetry is crucial for an $S$-wave resonance to be able to stand very near threshold and in the meantime to remain narrow, provided that the mass splitting is reasonably small. The effective range of pion-baryon scattering is unexpectedly large, proportional to $ 4πf_π^2/m_π^3$ when $m_π$ is around $m_π^\star$. As a result, this unexpected large length scale causes universality relations to break down much sooner than naively expected.

Cutoff regulators in chiral nuclear effective field theory

Three-dimensional cutoff regulators are frequently employed in multi-nucleon calculations, but they violate chiral symmetry and Lorentz invariance. A cutoff regularization scheme is proposed to compensate systematically at subleading orders for these symmetry violations caused by regulator artifacts. This is especially helpful when a soft momentum cutoff has to be used for technical reasons. It is also shown that dimensional regularization can still be used for some Feynman (sub)diagrams while cutoff regulators are used for the rest.

Improved convergence of chiral effective field theory for 1S0 of NN scattering

It is argued that the fine-tuning due to the unnaturally large, generalized effective range in the 1S0 channel of NN scattering must be incorporated in order for one to obtain satisfactory convergence for chiral effective field theory. Without the proposition of perturbative one-pion exchange, an effective field theory with the spin-0, isospin-1 dibaryon is developed to account for this fine-tuning, and is demonstrated up to O(Q) where the leading irreducible two-pion exchange arises. The approach shown in the paper results in rapid convergence of the 1S0 partial-wave amplitude.

Short-range nuclear forces in singlet channels

Continuing our effort to build a consistent power counting for chiral nuclear effective field theory (EFT), we discuss the subleading contact interactions, or counterterms, in the singlet channels of nucleon-nucleon scattering, with renormalization group invariance as the constraint. We argue that the rather large cutoff error of the leading amplitude requires O(Q) of the EFT expansion to be nonvanishing, contrary to Weinberg's original power counting. This, together with the ultraviolet divergences of two-pion exchanges in the distorted-wave expansion, leads to enhancement of the 1S0 counterterms and results in a pionless-theory-like power counting for the singlet channels.

Renormalizing Chiral Nuclear Forces: A Case Study of 3P0

We discuss in this paper the subleading contact interactions, or counterterms, in the 3P0 channel of nucleon-nucleon scattering up to O(Q^3), where, already at leading order, Weinberg's original power counting (WPC) scheme fails to fulfill renormalization group invariance due to the singular attraction of one-pion exchange. Treating the subleading interactions as perturbations and using renormalization group invariance as the criterion, we investigate whether WPC, although missing the leading order, could prescribe correct subleading counterterms. We find that the answer is negative and, instead, that the structure of counterterms agrees with a modified version of naive dimensional analysis. Using 3P0 as an example, we also study the cutoffs where the subleading potential can be iterated together with the leading one.

Renormalizing Chiral Nuclear Forces: Triplet Channels

We discuss the subleading contact interactions, or counterterms, of the triplet channels of nucleon-nucleon scattering in the framework of chiral effective field theory, with S and P waves as the examples. The triplet channels are special in that they allow the singular attraction of one-pion exchange to modify Weinberg's original power counting (WPC) scheme. With renormalization group invariance as the constraint, our power counting for the triplet channels can be summarized as a modified version of naive dimensional analysis in which, when compared with WPC, all of the counterterms in a given partial wave (leading or subleading) are enhanced by the same amount. More specifically, this means that WPC needs no modification in 3S1-3D1 and 3P1, whereas a two-order enhancement is necessary in both 3P0 and 3P2 - 3F2.

Heavy-particle formalism with Foldy-Wouthuysen representation

Utilizing the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, we use a bottom-up approach to construct heavy-baryon Lagrangian terms, without employing a relativistic Lagrangian as the starting point. The couplings obtained this way feature a straightforward $1/m$ expansion, which ensures Lorentz invariance order by order in effective field theories. We illustrate possible applications with two examples in the context of chiral effective field theory: the pion-nucleon coupling, which reproduces the results in the literature, and the pion-nucleon-delta coupling, which does not employ the Rarita-Schwinger field for describing the delta isobar, and hence does not invoke any spurious degrees of freedom. In particular, we point out that one of the subleading $πN Δ$ couplings used in the literature is, in fact, redundant, and discuss the implications of this. We also show that this redundant term should be dropped if one wants to use low-energy constants fitted from $πN$ scattering in calculations of $NN\to NNπ$ reactions.
