Variation of the 2175 Å extinction feature in Andromeda galaxy

Extinction curves contain key information on interstellar dust composition and size distribution, with the 2175 Å bump being the most prominent feature. We analyze 20 sightlines toward M31 using HST/STIS UV spectroscopy combined with multi-band photometry to characterize this feature. The extinction curves show substantial diversity, from MW-like shapes to flatter profiles with $R_V$ reaching up to $\sim5.8$. The strength of the 2175 Å feature varies widely, including two sightlines where the bump is essentially absent. The bump central wavelength spans a broader range than previously reported, while its width remains consistent with earlier studies. A moderate positive correlation is found between bump strength ($c_3$) and width ($γ$). We derive an average UV extinction curve toward M31 with $R_V \approx 3.53$. These results provide new constraints on dust properties and their spatial variations in this galaxy.

Highly curved reflective W-shape and J-shape photonic hook induced by light interaction with partially coated microfluidic channels

Photonic hook (PH) is a new type of artificial self-bending beam focused by a dielectric particle-lens with a curved waist smaller than the wavelength, which has the potential to revolutionize mesoscale photonics in many applications, e.g., optical trapping, signal switching, imaging, etc. In this paper, we discover a new mechanism that the highly curved PHs can be realised by the light interaction with the fully or partially metal-coated microchannels. The generated W-shaped and J-shaped PHs have bending angles exceeding 80-degree. Compared to other PH setups, the proposed design has a larger range to flexibly control the bending angle through the coating process and can be easily integrated with the established microfluidic systems.

Optical super-resonances in dielectric microsphere particles

Extreme field localization and giant field enhancement are often achieved by using plasmonic nanostructures and metamaterials such as strongly coupled silver nanoparticles.Dielectric particles and structures can focus light beyond the diffraction limit (photonic nanojet effect), but with much weaker strengths. Recently, we showed that dielectric microspheres could support high-order Mie resonance modes ("super resonance mode") that can generate similar level of electric field intensity enhancement as plasmonic structures on the order of 10^4 - 10^7. In this work, we aim to further advance our understanding of the super-resonance modes. New results on the effects of size parameter and refractive index on optical super-resonances across a wide parameter range and with improved numerical accuracies is presented. The results suggest that the electric field intensity enhancement could reach a record high level of 10^9-10^11 at specific conditions that surpass plasmonic enhancements. Moreover, super-resonance-enabled focusing by microsphere lens under different lighting sources (e.g., different color LEDs or lasers, halogen lamps) is investigated and compared for the first time. These results are important in understanding the super-resolution mechanism for microsphere nanoscopy and will find numerous potential applications in photonics.

Photonic Lenses with Whispering Gallery Waves at Janus Particles

We show that electric field on the plane surface of truncated sphere or cylinders (so called Janus particles) have sharp resonances versus the depth of removed segment of a sphere or cylinder. These resonances are related to the excited whispering gallery waves caused by truncation. It is a new mechanism of the field localization. Optimization of this effect for cylinders permits to reach a super resolution in the line thickness what can be used for contacting optical lithography.

A wide-angle metamaterial narrow-band-stop filter for 532 nm wavelength green light

Traditional optical interference narrow-band-stop filters do not possess wide-angle property, because peaks and troughs of filter spectrum would be moved at a non-normal angle of incidence (AOI), which could result in functional failure in particular cases, e.g. blocking of laser for pilot in cockpit during premeditated laser pointer direct. For this reason, we designed a wide-angle metamaterial narrow-band-stop filter assembled by cross shaped units to block 532 nm green light, which is firstly reported in the world. Unnecessary shift of spectrum caused by AOI change is effectively inhibited, and angular tolerance of wide-angle capability achieves to 35 degrees non-normal AOIs.

Spider Silk: The Mother Nature's Biological Superlens

This paper demonstrates a possible new microfiber bio near field lens that uses minor ampullate spider silk, spun from the Nephila edulis spider, to create a real time image of a surface using near field optical techniques. The microfiber bio lens is the world's first natural superlens created by exploring biological materials. The resolution of the surface image overcomes the diffraction limit, with the ability to resolve patterns at 100 nm under a standard white light source in reflection mode. This resolution offers further developments in superlens technology and paves the way for new bio optics.
