Non-Hermitian tuned topological band gap

Externally controllable band gap properties of a material is crucial in designing optoelectronic devices with desirable properties on-demand. Here, a possibility of single parameter tuning of trivial to non-trivial topological band gap by the introduction of linear gain in an otherwise trivial insulator is investigated. Gain is selectively injected into a one dimensional lattice of dimers such that the resulting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is symmetric under space-inversion but not under time-reversal. Inversion-symmetry of the lattice renders to probe the bulk-boundary correspondence and topological invariance by the bi-orthogonal Zak phase associated with a bulk Hamiltonian. Topological trivial to nontrivial phase transition and emergence of protected edge states are analytically shown to occur when the gain parameter is tuned across a non-Hermitian degeneracy. Tuneability of edge state location both at the boundary and inside the bulk by altering the gain distribution is discussed. Confirmation of gain-controlled topological edge state is reported in a realistic design of InGaAsP semiconductor cavity array.

Modes and exceptional points in waveguides with impedance boundary conditions

A planar waveguide with impedance boundary, composed of non-perfect metallic plates, and with passive or active dielectric filling is considered. We show the possibility of selective mode guiding and amplification when homogeneous pump is added to the dielectric, and analyze differences in TE and TM mode propagation. Such a non-conservative system is also shown to feature exceptional points, for specific and experimentally tunable parameters, which are described for a particular case of transparent dielectric.

Supersymmetric inversion of effective-range expansions

A complete and consistent inversion technique is proposed to derive an accurate interaction potential from an effective-range function for a given partial wave in the neutral case. First, the effective-range function is Taylor or Padé expanded, which allows high precision fitting of the experimental scattering phase shifts with a minimal number of parameters on a large energy range. Second, the corresponding poles of the scattering matrix are extracted in the complex wave-number plane. Third, the interaction potential is constructed with supersymmetric transformations of the radial Schrödinger equation. As an illustration, the method is applied to the experimental phase shifts of the neutron-proton elastic scattering in the $^1S_0$ and $^1D_2$ channels on the $[0-350]$ MeV laboratory energy interval.

Analytical stable Gaussian soliton supported by a parity-time-symmetric potential with power-law nonlinearity

We address the existence and stability of spatial localized modes supported by a parity-time-symmetric complex potential in the presence of power-law nonlinearity. The analytical expressions of the localized modes, which are Gaussian in nature, are obtained in both (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions. A linear stability analysis corroborated by the direct numerical simulations reveals that these analytical localized modes can propagate stably for a wide range of the potential parameters and for various order nonlinearities. Some dynamical characteristics of these solutions, such as the power and the transverse power-flow density, are also examined.

Dirac electron in graphene under supersymmetry generated magnetic fields

We use supersymmetry transformations to obtain new one parameter family of inhomogeneous magnetic fields $\mathbf{B} = \widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(x,λ) \hat{e}_z$ for which the massless Dirac electron possesses exact solution. The inhomogeneity appearing in $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(x,λ)$ can be controlled by the parameter $λ$. The obtained magnetic fields are interpreted as deformed variants of some physically attainable well known magnetic fields. A particular example, when a constant magnetic field is deformed, is considered to show that equidistant Landau levels exist even in the presence of an infinite number of specially designed inhomogeneous magnetic fields.

Supersymmetry generated one-way invisible PT-symmetric optical crystals

We use supersymmetry transformations to design transparent and one-way reflectionless (thus unidirectionally invisible) complex crystals with balanced gain and loss profiles. The scattering coefficients are investigated using the transfer matrix approach. It is shown that the amount of reflection from the left can be made arbitrarily close to zero whereas the reflection from the right is enhanced arbitrarily (or vice versa).

Infinite families of (non)-Hermitian Hamiltonians associated with exceptional $X_m$ Jacobi polynomials

Using an appropriate change of variable, the Schrödinger equation is transformed into a second-order differential equation satisfied by recently discovered Jacobi type $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. This facilitates the derivation of infinite families of exactly solvable Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian trigonometric Scarf potentials and finite number of Hermitian and infinite number of non-Hermitian PT-symmetric hyperbolic Scarf potentials. The bound state solutions of all these potentials are associated with the aforesaid exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These infinite families of potentials are shown to be extensions of the conventional trigonometric and hyperbolic Scarf potentials by the addition of some rational terms characterized by the presence of classical Jacobi polynomials. All the members of a particular family of these 'rationally extended polynomial-dependent' potentials have the same energy spectrum and possess translational shape invariant symmetry. The obtained non-Hermitian trigonometric Scarf potentials are shown to be quasi-Hermitian in nature ensuring the reality of the associated energy spectra.

Nonlinear localized modes in PT-symmetric optical media with competing gain and loss

The existence and stability of the nonlinear spatial localized modes are investigated in parity-time symmetric optical media characterized by a generic complex hyperbolic refractive index distribution with competing gain and loss profile. The exact analytical expressions of the localized modes are found for all values of the competing parameter and in the presence of both the self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. The effect of competing gain/loss profile on the stability structure of these localized modes are discussed with the help of linear stability analysis followed by the direct numerical simulation of the governing equation. The spatial localized modes in two-dimensional geometry as well as the transverse power-flow density associated with these localized modes are also examined.

Nonlinear localized modes in PT-symmetric Rosen-Morse potential well

We report the existence and properties of localized modes described by nonlinear Schroedinger equation with complex PT-symmetric Rosen-Morse potential well. Exact analytical expressions of the localized modes are found in both one dimensional and two-dimensional geometry with self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. Linear stability analysis reveals that these localized modes are unstable for all real values of the potential parameters although corresponding linear Schroedinger eigenvalue problem possesses unbroken PT-symmetry. This result has been verified by the direct numerical simulation of the governing equation. The transverse power flow density associated with these localized modes has also been examined.

Effect of Position-dependent Mass on Dynamical Breaking of Type B and Type X_2 N-fold Supersymmetry

We investigate effect of position-dependent mass profiles on dynamical breaking of N-fold supersymmetry in several type B and type X_2 models. We find that N-fold supersymmetry in rational potentials in the constant-mass background are steady against the variation of mass profiles. On the other hand, some physically relevant mass profiles can change the pattern of dynamical N-fold supersymmetry breaking in trigonometric, hyperbolic, and exponential potentials of both type B and type X_2. The latter results open the possibility of detecting experimentally phase transition of N-fold as well as ordinary supersymmetry at a realistic energy scale.

Quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonians associated with exceptional orthogonal polynomials

Using the method of point canonical transformation, we derive some exactly solvable rationally extended quantum Hamiltonians which are non-Hermitian in nature and whose bound state wave functions are associated with Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These Hamiltonians are shown, with the help of imaginary shift of co-ordinate: $ e^{-αp} x e^{αp} = x+ i α$, to be both quasi and pseudo-Hermitian. It turns out that the corresponding energy spectra is entirely real.

Non-isospectrality of the generalized Swanson Hamiltonian and harmonic oscillator

The generalized Swanson Hamiltonian $H_{GS} = w (\tilde{a}\tilde{a}^†+ 1/2) + α\tilde{a}^2 + β\tilde{a}^{†^2}$ with $\tilde{a} = A(x)d/dx + B(x)$, can be transformed into an equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian with the help of a similarity transformation. It is shown that the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian can be further transformed into the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian so long as $[\tilde{a},\tilde{a}^†]=$ constant. However, the main objective of this paper is to show that though the commutator of $\tilde{a}$ and $\tilde{a}^†$ is constant, the generalized Swanson Hamiltonian is not necessarily isospectral to the harmonic oscillator. Reason for this anomaly is discussed in the frame work of position dependent mass models by choosing $A(x)$ as the inverse square root of the mass function.

Nonsingular potentials from excited state factorization of a quantum system with position dependent mass

The modified factorization technique of a quantum system characterized by position-dependent mass Hamiltonian is presented. It has been shown that the singular superpotential defined in terms of a mass function and a excited state wave function of a given position-dependent mass Hamiltonian can be used to construct non-singular isospectral Hamiltonians. The method has been illustrated with the help of a few examples.

A note on the PT-invariant periodic potential V(x)=4 cos^2 x + 4 i V_0 sin 2x

It is shown that the PT symmetric Hamiltonian with the periodic potential V(x) = 4 cos^2 x + 4 i V_0 sin 2x can be mapped into a Hermitian Hamiltonian for $V_0<0.5$, by a similarity transformation. It is also shown that there exist a second critical point of the potential V(x), apart from the known critical point $V_0=0.5$, for $V_0^c ~ .888437$ after which no part of the eigenvalues and the band structure remains real. Relevant physical consequence of this finding has been pointed out.

Position Dependent Mass Schroedinger Equation and Isospectral Potentials : Intertwining Operator approach

Here we have studied first and second-order intertwining approach to generate isospectral partner potentials of position-dependent (effective) mass Schroedinger equation. The second-order intertwiner is constructed directly by taking it as second order linear differential operator with position depndent coefficients and the system of equations arising from the intertwining relationship is solved for the coefficients by taking an ansatz. A complete scheme for obtaining general solution is obtained which is valid for any arbitrary potential and mass function. The proposed technique allows us to generate isospectral potentials with the following spectral modifications: (i) to add new bound state(s), (ii) to remove bound state(s) and (iii) to leave the spectrum unaffected. To explain our findings with the help of an illustration, we have used point canonical transformation (PCT) to obtain the general solution of the position dependent mass Schrodinger equation corresponding to a potential and mass function. It is shown that our results are consistent with the formulation of type A N-fold supersymmetry [14,18] for the particular case N = 1 and N = 2 respectively.

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials and exactly solvable potentials in position dependent mass Schroedinger Hamiltonians

Some exactly solvable potentials in the position dependent mass background are generated whose bound states are given in terms of Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These potentials are shown to be shape invariant and isospectral to the potentials whose bound state solutions involve classical Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials.
