Fe clusters (Fe$_n$, n=1-6) chemisorbed on vacancy defects in graphene: Stability, spin-dipole moment and magnetic anisotropy

In this work, we have studied the chemical and magnetic interactions of Fe$_n$ ; n=1-6 clusters with vacancy defects (monovacancy to correlated vacancies with six missing C atoms) in a graphene sheet by ab-initio density functional calculations combined with Hubbard U corrections for correlated Fe- d electrons. It is found that the vacancy formation energies are lowered in the presence of Fe, indicating an easier destruction of the graphene sheet. Due to strong chemical interactions between Fe clusters and vacancies, a complex distribution of magnetic moments appear on the distorted Fe clusters which results in reduced averaged magnetic moments compared to the free clusters. In addition to that, we have calculated spin-dipole moments and magnetic anisotropy energies. The calculated spin-dipole moments arising from anisotropic spin density distributions, vary between positive and negative values, yielding increased or decreased effective moments. Depending on the cluster geometry, the easy axis of magnetization of the Fe clusters shows in-plane or out-of-plane behavior.

Stability of quasi-two dimensional zigzag carbon and its reaction pathway to graphene

Using the density functional theory we investigate a quasi-two dimensional carbon allotrope, ZzC, formed by square carbon lattice buckled in zigzag manner. By analyzing the Kohn-Sham energy and phonon dispersion obtained by lattice dynamical calculations we show that ZzC is stable with binding energy of 7.46 eV per atom. To examine the possible route of formation we find out reaction pathway from ZzC to graphene using nudge elastic band method, generalized for solid state calculations. The reaction pathway shows the formation of carbyne as the intermediate state. Such a pathway is seen to exhibit two transitions states with reaction barriers of 0.21 eV/atom from ZzC to carbyne, and of 1.19 eV/atom from graphene to carbyne. Although ZzC is stable, upon hydrogenation it dissociates and prefers the carbyne-like structure by forming chains of polyacetylene.

Single-sided-hydrogenated graphene: Density functional theorypredictions

Hydrogenation has proven to be an effective tool to open the bandgap of graphene. In the present density functional study we demonstrate that single-side-hydrogenated graphene is a semiconductor with an indirect bandgap of 1.89 eV, in between the gapless graphene and wide bandgap graphane. We show that its electronic structure and lattice characteristics are substantially different from those of graphene, graphone, or graphane. The lattice parameter and C-C bond length are found to be lengthened by 15% of those of graphene. Our binding energy analysis confirms that such a single sided hydrogenation leads to thermodynamically stable material.

Exploiting Grids for applications in Condensed Matter Physics

Grids - the collection of heterogeneous computers spread across the globe - present a new paradigm for the large scale problems in variety of fields. We discuss two representative cases in the area of condensed matter physics outlining the widespread applications of the Grids. Both the problems involve calculations based on commonly used Density Functional Theory and hence can be considered to be of general interest. We demonstrate the suitability of Grids for the problems discussed and provide a general algorithm to implement and manage such large scale problems.

Interaction of iron clusters (Fe_n; n <= 6) with a divacancy in graphene

In this work, we have studied the chemical and magnetic interactions of Fe_n; n <= 6, clusters with a divacancy site in a graphene sheet by ab-initio density functional calculations. Our results show significant chemical interactions between the cluster and graphene. As a result, a complex distribution of magnetic moments appear on the distorted Fe clusters in presence of graphene and results in a lower average magnetic moments compared to the free clusters. The presence of cluster also prevents the formation of 5-8-5 ringed structure known to exhibit in a graphene sheet having a divacancy defect. The clusters induce electronic states primarily of d-character near the Fermi level.

Density functional investigations of defect induced mid-gap states in graphane

We have carried out ab initio electronic structure calculations on graphane (hydrogenated graphene) with single and double vacancy defects. Our analysis of the density of states reveal that such vacancies induce the mid gap states and modify the band gap. The induced states are due to the unpaired electrons on carbon atoms. Interestingly the placement and the number of such states is found to be sensitive to the distance between the vacancies. Furthermore we also found that in most of the cases the vacancies induce a local magnetic moment.
