Deciding if a variety forms an algebraic group

Let nn be a positive integer and let f1,…,frf_1, \ldots, f_r be polynomials in n2n^2 indeterminates over an algebraically closed field KK. We describe an algorithm to decide if the invertible matrices contained in the variety of f1,…,frf_1, \ldots, f_r form a subgroup of GL(n,K)GL(n,K); that is, we show how to decide if the polynomials f1,…,frf_1, \ldots, f_r define a linear algebraic group.

The isomorphism problem for graded algebras and its application to mod-p cohomology rings of small p-groups

The mod-p cohomology ring of a non-trivial finite p-group is an infinite dimensional, finitely presented graded unital algebra over the field with p elements, with generators in positive degrees. We describe an effective algorithm to test if two such algebras are graded isomorphic. As application, we determine all graded isomorphisms between the mod-p cohomology rings of all p-groups of order at most 100.

The Quillen category of finite p-groups and coclass theory

Coclass theory can be used to define infinite families of finite p-groups of a fixed coclass. It is conjectured that the groups in one of these infinite families all have isomorphic mod-p cohomology rings. Here we prove that almost all groups in one of these infinite families have equivalent Quillen categories. We also show how the Quillen categories of the groups in an infinite family are connected to the Quillen category of their associated infinite pro-p-group of finite coclass.

Coclass theory for nilpotent semigroups via their associated algebras

Coclass theory has been a highly successful approach towards the investigation and classification of finite nilpotent groups. Here we suggest a similar approach for finite nilpotent semigroups. This differs from the group theory setting in that we additionally use certain algebras associated to the considered semigroups. We propose a series of conjectures on our suggested approach. If these become theorems, then this would reduce the classification of nilpotent semigroups of a fixed coclass to a finite calculation. Our conjectures are supported by the classification of nilpotent semigroups of coclass 0 and 1. Computational experiments suggest that the conjectures also hold for the nilpotent semigroups of coclass 2 and 3.

Infinite sequences of pp-groups with fixed coclass

Eick & Leedham-Green sketched a construction for infinite sequences of finite pp-groups with fixed coclass. These infinite sequences have turned out to be very useful in the theory of finite pp-groups. We exhibit a detailed description for the construction of the finite sequences and we determine presentations for the infinite sequences for the primes and coclasses (2,1)(2,1), (2,2)(2,2) and (3,1)(3,1).
