Angular analysis of bottom-flavored hadron production in semileptonic decays of polarized top quarks

We study the inclusive production of bottom-flavored hadrons from semileptonic decays of polarized top quarks at next-to-leading order in QCD using fragmentation functions recently determined from a global fit to $e^+e^-$ data. We provide the relevant differential decay widths at parton level in analytic form. These results fill an important gap in the theoretical interpretation of recent measurements of the top-quark polarization and the $t\bar{t}$ spin correlations using dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. As an illustration, we study the distributions in the scaled bottom-hadron energy of the polarized-top-quark decay widths for different $W$-boson helicities.

Bilinear quark operators in the RI/SMOM scheme at three loops

We consider the renormalization of the matrix elements of the bilinear quark operators $\barψψ$, $\barψγ_μψ$, and $\barψσ_{μν}ψ$ at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory at the symmetric subtraction point. This allows us to obtain conversion factors between the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and the regularization invariant symmetric momentum subtraction (RI/SMOM) scheme. The obtained results can be used to reduce the errors in determinations of quark masses from lattice QCD simulations. The results are given in Landau gauge.

Inclusive $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ production in $Υ$ decay at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$ in nonrelativistic QCD factorization

We study $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ inclusive production in $Υ$ decay within the framework of nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization. In the latter case, for which no experimental data exist so far, we also include the $h_c$ feed-down contribution. We calculate the short distance coefficients completely through $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$. The NRQCD predictions for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Υ\to J/ψ+X)$ via direct production, evaluated with different sets of long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs), all agree with the experimental data in a reasonable range of renormalization scale. Using $η_c$ and $h_c$ LDMEs obtained from $J/ψ$ and $χ_c$ ones via heavy-quark spin symmetry, we find that the bulk of $\mathcal{B}(Υ\toη_c+X)$ via prompt production arises from the $c\bar{c}({}^3\!S_1^{[8]})$ Fock state. The experimental study of this decay process would, therefore, provide a particularly clean probe of the color octet mechanism of heavy-quarkonium production.

Dipole subtraction at next-to-leading order in nonrelativistic-QCD factorization

We describe an implementation of a subtraction scheme in the nonrelativistic-QCD treatment of heavy-quarkonium production at next-to-leading-order in the strong-coupling constant, covering $S$- and $P$-wave bound states. It is based on the dipole subtraction in the massless version by Catani and Seymour and its extension to massive quarks by Phaf and Weinzierl. Important additions include the treatment of heavy-quark bound states, in particular due to the more complicated infrared-divergence structure in the case of $P$-wave states.

Complete Nonrelativistic-QCD Prediction for Prompt Double $J/ψ$ Hadroproduction

We perform a complete study of prompt double $J/ψ$ hadroproduction at leading order in the nonrelativistic-QCD factorization framework by including all possible pairings of the $c\bar{c}$ Fock states ${}^1\!S_0^{[8]}$, ${}^3\!S_1^{[1,8]}$, and ${}^3\!P_J^{[1,8]}$ with $J=0,1,2$. We find that the ${}^1\!S_0^{[8]}$ and ${}^3\!P_J^{[8]}$ channels of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ production and the ${}^3\!P_J^{[1]}$ and ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ channels of $χ_{cJ}$ production, which have been overlooked so far, greatly dominate at large invariant masses and rapidity separations of the $J/ψ$ pair, and that their inclusion nearly fills the large gap between previous incomplete predictions within the color-singlet model and the recent measurement by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC, leaving room for next-to-leading-order corrections of typical size.

mr: a C++ library for the matching and running of the Standard Model parameters

We present the C++ program library mr that allows us to reliably calculate the values of the running parameters in the Standard Model at high energy scales. The initial conditions are obtained by relating the running parameters in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ renormalization scheme to observables at lower energies with full two-loop precision. The evolution is then performed in accordance with the renormalization group equations with full three-loop precision. Pure QCD corrections to the matching and running are included through four loops. We also provide a Mathematica interface for this program library.

On a four-loop form factor in N=4

We report on progress toward computing a four-loop supersymmetric form factor in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. A representative example particle content from the involved supermultiplets is a stress-tensor operator with two on-shell gluons. In previous work, the integrand for this form factor was obtained using color-kinematic duality in a particularly simple form. Here the result of applying integration-by-parts identities is discussed and cross-checks of the result is performed. Rational IBP relations and their reduction are introduced as a potentially useful aide.

Towards a four-loop form factor

The four-loop, two-point form factor contains the first non-planar correction to the lightlike cusp anomalous dimension. This anomalous dimension is a universal function which appears in many applications. Its planar part in N = 4 SYM is known, in principle, exactly from AdS/CFT and integrability while its non-planar part has been conjectured to vanish. The integrand of the form factor of the stress-tensor multiplet in N = 4 SYM including the non-planar part was obtained in previous work. We parametrise the difficulty of integrating this integrand. We have obtained a basis of master integrals for all integrals in the four-loop, two-point class in two ways. First, we computed an IBP reduction of the integrand of the N = 4 form factor using massive computer algebra (Reduze). Second, we computed a list of master integrals based on methods of the Mint package, suitably extended using Macaulay2 / Singular. The master integrals obtained in both ways are consistent with some minor exceptions. The second method indicates that the master integrals apply beyond N = 4 SYM, in particular to QCD. The numerical integration of several of the master integrals will be reported and remaining obstacles will be outlined

$η_c$ production at the LHC challenges nonrelativistic-QCD factorization

We analyze the first measurement of $η_c$ production, performed by the LHCb Collaboration, in the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong-coupling constant $α_s$ and the relative velocity $v$ of the bound quarks including the feeddown from $h_c$ mesons. Converting the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) extracted by various groups from $J/ψ$ yield and polarization data to the $η_c$ case using heavy-quark spin symmetry, we find that the resulting NLO NRQCD predictions greatly overshoot the LHCb data, while the color-singlet model provides an excellent description.

Master integrals for the four-loop Sudakov form factor

The light-like cusp anomalous dimension is a universal function in the analysis of infrared divergences. In maximally ($\mathcal{N}=4$) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in the planar limit, it is known, in principle, to all loop orders. The non-planar corrections are not known in any theory, with the first appearing at the four-loop order. The simplest quantity which contains this correction is the four-loop two-point form factor of the stress tensor multiplet. This form factor was largely obtained in integrand form in a previous work for $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, up to a free parameter. In this work, a reduction of the appearing integrals obtained by solving integration-by-parts (IBP) identities using a modified version of Reduze is reported. The form factor is shown to be independent of the remaining parameter at integrand level due to an intricate pattern of cancellations after IBP reduction. Moreover, two of the integral topologies vanish after reduction. The appearing master integrals are cross-checked using independent algebraic-geometry techniques explored in the Mint package. The latter results provide the basis of master integrals applicable to generic form factors, including those in Quantum Chromodynamics. Discrepancies between explicitly solving the IBP relations and the MINT approach are highlighted. Remaining bottlenecks to completing the computation of the four-loop non-planar cusp anomalous dimension in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and beyond are identified.

Relativistic corrections to $J/ψ$ polarization in photo- and hadroproduction

We systematically calculate the relativistic corrections to the polarization variables of prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction and hadroproduction using the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. Specifically, we include the ${}^3\!S_1^{[1]}$ and ${}^3\!P_{J}^{[1]}$ color-singlet and the ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$, ${}^1\!S_{0}^{[8]}$, and ${}^3\!P_{J}^{[8]}$ color-octet channels as well as the effects due to the mixing between the ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ and ${}^3\!D_1^{[8]}$ channels. We provide all the squared hard-scattering amplitudes in analytic form. Assuming the nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements to satisfy the velocity scaling rules, we find the relativistic corrections to be appreciable, especially at small transverse momentum $p_T$ and large inelasticity $z$. The results obtained here and in our previous work on the unpolarized yield [Phys. Rev. D 90, 014045 (2014)] will help to render global analyses of prompt $J/ψ$ production data more complete and hopefully to shed light on the $J/ψ$ polarization puzzle.

We systematically calculate the relativistic corrections to prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction and hadroproduction using the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. We provide all the squared hard-scattering amplitudes in analytic form. Assuming the nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements to satisfy the velocity scaling rules, we find the relativistic corrections to be appreciable, except in the ${}^3\!S_1^{[1]}$ color-singlet channel of hadroproduction. We also observe significant differences in the line shapes of the relativistic corrections between photoproduction and hadroproduction.

Two-loop electroweak threshold corrections in the Standard Model

We study the relationships between the basic parameters of the on-shell renormalization scheme and their counterparts in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme at full order ${\cal O}(α^2)$ in the Standard Model. These enter as threshold corrections the renormalization group analyses underlying, e.g., the investigation of the vacuum stability. To ensure the gauge invariance of the parameters, in particular of the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ masses, we work in $R_ξ$ gauge and systematically include tadpole contributions. We also consider the gaugeless-limit approximation and compare it with the full two-loop electroweak calculation.

Two-loop electroweak threshold corrections to the bottom and top Yukawa couplings

We study the relationship between the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ Yukawa coupling and the pole mass for the bottom and top quarks at the two-loop electroweak order ${\cal O}(α^2)$ in the gaugeless limit of the standard model. We also consider the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ to pole mass relationships at this order, which include tadpole contributions to ensure the gauge independence of the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ masses. In order to suppress numerically large tadpole contributions, we propose a redefinition of the running heavy-quark mass in terms of the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ Yukawa coupling. We also present $Δr$ in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme at ${\cal O}(α^2)$ in the gaugeless limit. As an aside, we also list the exact two-loop expression for the mass counterterms of the bottom and top quarks.

Considerations concerning the generalization of the Dirac equations to unstable fermions

We discuss the generalization of the Dirac equations and spinors in momentum space to free unstable spin-$1/2$ fermions taking into account the fundamental requirement of Lorentz covariance. We derive the generalized adjoint Dirac equations and spinors, and explain the very simple relation that exists, in our formulation, between the unstable and stable cases. As an application of the generalized spinors, we evaluate the probability density. We also discuss the behavior of the generalized Dirac equations under time reversal.

Propagator mixing renormalization for Majorana fermions

We consider a mixed system of unstable Majorana fermions in a general parity-nonconserving theory and renormalize its propagator matrix to all orders in the pole scheme, in which the squares of the renormalized masses are identified with the complex pole positions and the wave-function renormalization (WFR) matrices are adjusted in compliance with the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism. In contrast to the case of unstable Dirac fermions, the WFR matrices of the in and out states are uniquely fixed, while they again bifurcate in the sense that they are no longer related by pseudo-Hermitian conjugation. We present closed analytic expressions for the renormalization constants in terms of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and pseudovector parts of the unrenormalized self-energy matrix, which is computable from the one-particle-irreducible Feynman diagrams of the flavor transitions, as well as their expansions through two loops. In the case of stable Majorana fermions, the well-known one-loop results are recovered.

About the EW contribution to the relation between pole and MS-masses of the top-quark in the Standard Model

Results of our recent re-analysis of the electroweak contribution to the relation between pole and running masses of top-quark within the Standard Model is reviewed. We argue, that if vacuum of SM is stable, then there exists an optimal value of renormalization group scale (IR-point), at which the radiative corrections to the matching condition between parameters of Higgs sector and pole masses is minimal or equal to zero. Within the available accuracy, we find the IR-point to lie in an interval between value of Z-boson mass and twice the value of W-boson mass. The value of scale is relevant for extraction of Higgs self-coupling from cross-section as well as for construction of effective Lagrangian.

All-order renormalization of propagator matrix for fermionic system with flavor mixing

We consider a mixed system of Dirac fermions in a general parity-nonconserving theory and renormalize the propagator matrix to all orders in the pole scheme, in which the squares of the renormalized masses are identified with the complex pole positions and the wave-function renormalization (WFR) matrices are adjusted in compliance with the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism. We present closed analytic all-order expressions and their expansions through two loops for the renormalization constants in terms of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and pseudovector parts of the unrenormalized self-energy matrix, which is computable from the one-particle-irreducible Feynman diagrams of the flavor transitions. We identify residual degrees of freedom in the WFR matrices and propose an additional renormalization condition to exhaust them. We then explain how our results may be generalized to the case of unstable fermions, in which we encounter the phenomenon of WFR bifurcation. In the special case of a solitary unstable fermion, the all-order-renormalized propagator is presented in a particularly compact form.

Average gluon and quark jet multiplicities at higher orders

We develop a new formalism for computing and including both the perturbative and nonperturbative QCD contributions to the scale evolution of average gluon and quark jet multiplicities. The new method is motivated by recent progress in timelike small-x resummation obtained in the MS-bar factorization scheme. We obtain next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) resummed expressions, which represent generalizations of previous analytic results. Our expressions depend on two nonperturbative parameters with clear and simple physical interpretations. A global fit of these two quantities to all available experimental data sets that are compatible with regard to the jet algorithms demonstrates by its goodness how our results solve a longstandig problem of QCD. We show that the statistical and theoretical uncertainties both do not exceed 5% for scales above 10 GeV. We finally propose to use the jet multiplicity data as a new way to extract the strong-coupling constant. Including all the available theoretical input within our approach, we obtain alpha_s^(5)(M_Z)=0.1199 +- 0.0026 in the MS-bar scheme in an approximation equivalent to next-to-next-to-leading order enhanced by the resummations of ln(x) terms through the NNLL level and of ln(Q^2) terms by the renormalization group, in excellent agreement with the present world average.

Color-kinematic Duality for Form Factors

Recently a powerful duality between color and kinematics has been proposed for integrands of scattering amplitudes in quite general gauge theories. In this paper the duality proposal is extended to the more general class of gauge theory observables formed by form factors. After a discussion of the general setup the existence of the duality is verified in two- and three-loop examples in four dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory which involve the stress energy tensor multiplet. In these cases the duality reproduces known results in a particularly transparent and uniform way. As a non-trivial application we obtain a very simple form of the integrand of the four-loop two-point (Sudakov) form factor which passes a large set of unitarity cut checks.

Inclusive J/psi and psi(2S) production from b-hadron decay in p anti-p and pp collisions

We study the inclusive production of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons originating from the decays of bottom-flavored hadrons produced in p anti-p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron and in pp collisions at the CERN LHC. We work at next-to-leading order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme (GM-VFNS) implemented with nonperturbative fragmentation functions fitted to e^+e^- data of inclusive b-hadron production exploiting their universality. The three-momentum distributions of the charmonia used were extracted from B-decay data in the framework of nonrelativistic-QCD factorization. Comparing the theoretical predictions thus obtained with transverse-momentum distributions measured by the CDF II, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb Collaborations, we find excellent overall agreement as for both absolute normalization and lineshape, which provides a nontrivial test of the GM-VFNS over wide ranges of center-of-mass energy, transverse momentum, and rapidity.

Next-to-leading-order tests of nonrelativistic-QCD factorization with $J/ψ$ yield and polarization

We report on recent progress in testing the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) at next-to-leading order (NLO) for $J/ψ$ yield and polarization. We demonstrate that it is possible to unambiguously determine the leading color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) in compliance with the velocity scaling rules through a global fit to experimental data of unpolarized $J/ψ$ production in $pp$, $p\bar{p}$, $ep$, $γγ$, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.Three data sets not included in the fit, from hadroproduction and from photoproduction in the fixed-target and colliding-beam modes, are nicely reproduced. The polarization observables measured in different frames at DESY HERA and CERN LHC reasonably agree with NLO NRQCD predictions obtained using the LDMEs extracted from the global fit, while measurements from the FNAL Tevatron exhibit severe disagreement. We demonstrate that alternative LDME sets recently obtained in two other NLO NRQCD analyses of $J/ψ$ yield and polarization, with different philosophies, also fail to reconcile the Tevatron polarization data with the other available world data.

NLO NRQCD disfavors the interpretation of X(3872) as $χ_{c1}(2P)$

We study $χ_{c1}(2P)$ inclusive hadroproduction at next-to-leading order (NLO), both in $α_s$ and $v^2$, within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), including the color-singlet $^3P_1^{[1]}$ and color-octet $^3S_1^{[8]}$ $c\bar c$ Fock states as well as the mixing of the latter with the $^3D_1^{[8]}$ state. Assuming the recently discovered X(3872) hadron to be the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ charmonium state $χ_{c1}(2P)$, we perform a fit to the cross sections measured by the CDF, CMS, and LHCb Collaborations. We either obtain an unacceptably high value of $χ^2$, a value of $|R_{2P}^\prime(0)|$ incompatible with well-established potential models, or an intolerable violation of the NRQCD velocity rules. We thus conclude that NLO NRQCD is inconsistent with the hypothesis $X(3872)\equivχ_{c1}(2P)$.

On the difference between the pole and the MSbar masses of the top quark at the electroweak scale

We argue that for a Higgs boson mass M_H ~125 GeV, as suggested by recent Higgs searches at the LHC, the inclusion of electroweak radiative corrections in the relationship between the pole and MS-bar masses of the top quark reduces the difference to about 1 GeV. This is relevant for the scheme dependence of electroweak observables, such as the rho parameter, as well as for the extraction of the top quark mass from experimental data. In fact, the value currently extracted by reconstructing the invariant mass of the top quark decay products is expected to be close to the pole mass, while the analysis of the total cross section of top quark pair production yields a clean determination of the MS-bar mass.

Bottom-flavored hadrons from top-quark decay at next-to-leading order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme

We study the scaled-energy (x_B) distribution of bottom-flavored hadrons (B) inclusively produced in top-quark decays at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme endowed with realistic, nonperturbative fragmentation functions that are obtained through a global fit to e^+e^- data from CERN LEP1 and SLAC SLC exploiting their universality and scaling violations. Specifically, we study the effects of gluon fragmentation and finite bottom-quark and B-hadron masses. We find the NLO corrections to be significant. Gluon fragmentation leads to an appreciable reduction in the partial decay width at low values of x_B. Hadron masses are responsible for the low-x_B threshold, while the bottom-quark mass is of minor importance. Neglecting the latter, we also study the doubly differential distribution d^2Gamma/[dx_B dcos(theta)] of the partial width of the decay t -> b W^+ -> B l^+ nu_l + X, where theta is the decay angle of the charged lepton in the W-boson rest frame.

Higgs boson mass and new physics

We discuss the lower Higgs boson mass bounds which come from the absolute stability of the Standard Model (SM) vacuum and from the Higgs inflation, as well as the prediction of the Higgs boson mass coming from asymptotic safety of the SM. We account for the 3-loop renormalization group evolution of the couplings of the Standard Model and for a part of two-loop corrections that involve the QCD coupling alpha_s to initial conditions for their running. This is one step above the current state of the art procedure ("one-loop matching--two-loop running"). This results in reduction of the theoretical uncertainties in the Higgs boson mass bounds and predictions, associated with the Standard Model physics, to 1-2 GeV. We find that with the account of existing experimental uncertainties in the mass of the top quark and alpha_s (taken at 2sigma level) the bound reads M_H>=M_min (equality corresponds to the asymptotic safety prediction), where M_min=129+-6 GeV. We argue that the discovery of the SM Higgs boson in this range would be in agreement with the hypothesis of the absence of new energy scales between the Fermi and Planck scales, whereas the coincidence of M_H with M_min would suggest that the electroweak scale is determined by Planck physics. In order to clarify the relation between the Fermi and Planck scale a construction of an electron-positron or muon collider with a center of mass energy ~200+200 GeV (Higgs and t-quark factory) would be needed.

J/psi polarization at Tevatron and LHC: Nonrelativistic-QCD factorization at the crossroads

We study the polarization observables of J/psi hadroproduction at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. We complete the present knowledge of the relativistic corrections by also providing the contribution due to the intermediate ^3P_J^{[8]} color-octet states at this order, which turns out to be quite significant. Exploiting the color-octet long-distance matrix elements previously extracted through a global fit to experimental data of unpolarized J/psi production, we provide theoretical predictions in the helicity and Collins-Soper frames and compare them with data taken by CDF at Fermilab Tevatron I and II and by ALICE at CERN LHC. The notorious CDF J/psi polarization anomaly familiar from leading-order analyses persists at the quantum level, while the situation looks promising for the LHC, which is bound to bring final clarification.

J/psi production in NRQCD: A global analysis of yield and polarization

We present a rigorous next-to-leading order analysis of J/psi yield and polarization within the factorization theorem of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). To the orders considered, this framework depends on three free parameters, the color-octet long-distance matrix elements. We extract their values in a global fit to inclusive J/psi production data from various hadroproduction, photoproduction, two-photon scattering and electron-positron annihilation experiments. We show that this fit is constrained and stable and describes all data sufficiently well. We then make predictions for J/psi polarization in photo- and hadroproduction and compare them to the currently available data. As for photoproduction, HERA data is not precise enough to draw definite conclusions. But as for hadroproduction, CDF data measured at Tevatron run II is in strong conflict with NRQCD predictions. With early ALICE data being however compatible with NRQCD, the future, more precise polarization measurements at the LHC will thus have the potential to clearly confirm or dismiss LDME universality.

Low-mass Higgs decays to four leptons at one loop and beyond

The ongoing searches for Higgs-boson signals in data taken at the CERN LHC and the Fermilab Tevatron crucially rely on the decay channels H -> Z l l and H -> W l nu. We present a precision study of the partial widths of these decay channels including the full one-loop electroweak corrections and the dominant contributions at two and three loops, of O(G_F^2 m_t^4), O(G_F m_t^2 alpha_s), and O(G_F m_t^2 alpha_s^2). Since the invariant mass of the off-shell intermediate boson is relatively low in the mass window 115 GeV < m_H < 129 GeV of current interest, lepton mass effects are relevant, especially for the tau lepton.

Mellin-Barnes representations of Feynman diagrams, linear systems of differential equations, and polynomial solutions

We argue that the Mellin-Barnes representations of Feynman diagrams can be used for obtaining linear systems of homogeneous differential equations for the original Feynman diagrams with arbitrary powers of propagators without recourse to the integration-by-parts technique. These systems of differential equations can be used (i) for the differential reductions to sets of basic functions and (ii) for counting the numbers of master integrals.

Renormalization in general theories with inter-generation mixing

We derive general and explicit expressions for the unrenormalized and renormalized dressed propagators of fermions in parity-nonconserving theories with inter-generation mixing. The mass eigenvalues, the corresponding mass counterterms, and the effect of inter-generation mixing on their determination are discussed. Invoking the Aoki-Hioki-Kawabe-Konuma-Muta renormalization conditions and employing a number of very useful relations from Matrix Algebra, we show explicitly that the renormalized dressed propagators satisfy important physical properties.

Finding new relationships between hypergeometric functions by evaluating Feynman integrals

Several new relationships between hypergeometric functions are found by comparing results for Feynman integrals calculated using different methods. A new expression for the one-loop propagator-type integral with arbitrary masses and arbitrary powers of propagators is derived in terms of only one Appell hypergeometric function F_1. From the comparison of this expression with a previously known one, a new relation between the Appell functions F_1 and F_4 is found. By comparing this new expression for the case of equal masses with another known result, a new formula for reducing the F_1 function with particular arguments to the hypergeometric function _3F_2 is derived. By comparing results for a particular one-loop vertex integral obtained using different methods, a new relationship between F_1 functions corresponding to a quadratic transformation of the arguments is established. Another reduction formula for the F_1 function is found by analysing the imaginary part of the two-loop self-energy integral on the cut. An explicit formula relating the F_1 function and the Gaussian hypergeometric function _2F_1 whose argument is the ratio of polynomials of degree six is presented.

Probing nonrelativistic QCD factorization in polarized J/psi photoproduction at next-to-leading order

We analyze the polarization observables of J/psi photoproduction at next-to-leading order (NLO) within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). This is the first NLO study of heavy-quarkonium polarization including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate ^1S_0^{[8]}, ^3S_1^{[8]}, and ^3P_J^{[8]} color-octet (CO) states in the worldwide endeavor to test NRQCD factorization at the quantum level. We present theoretical predictions in the helicity, target, and Collins-Soper frames of DESY HERA, evaluated using the CO long-distance matrix elements previously extracted through a global fit to experimental data of unpolarized J/psi production, and confront them with recent measurements by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations. We find the overall agreement to be satisfactory, but the case for NRQCD to be not as strong as for the J/psi yield.

Quark mixing renormalization effects in the determination of |V_{tq}|

We study the numerical effects of several renormalization schemes of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix on the top-quark decay widths. We then employ these results to infer the relative shifts in the CKM parameters |V_{tq}|^2 due to the quark mixing renormalization corrections, assuming that they are determined directly from the top-quark partial decay widths, without imposing unitarity constraints. We also discuss the implications of these effects on the ratio R = Gamma(t -> Wb) / Gamma_t and the determination of |V_{tb}|^2.

Reconciling J/psi production at HERA, RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC with NRQCD factorization at next-to-leading order

We perform a combined fit of the color-octet (CO) long-distance matrix elements to the transverse-momentum (p_T) distributions measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron and H1 at DESY HERA and demonstrate that they also successfully describe the p_T distributions from PHENIX at BNL RHIC and CMS at the CERN LHC as well as the photon-proton c.m. energy and (with worse agreement) the inelasticity distributions from H1. This provides a first rigorous test of NRQCD factorization at NLO. In all experiments, the CO processes are shown to be indispensable.

We present a simple formula for the total cross section sigma^{nu N} of neutral- and charged-current deep-inelastic scattering of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos on isoscalar nuclear targets, which is proportional to the structure function F_2^{nu N}(M_V^2/s, M_V^2), where M_V is the intermediate-boson mass and s is the square of the center-of-mass energy. The coefficient in the front of F_2^{nu N}(x, Q^2) depends on the asymptotic low-x behavior of F_2^{nu N}. It contains an additional ln(s) term if F_2^{nu N} scales with a power of ln(1/x). Hence, an asymptotic low-x behavior F_2^{nu N} propto ln^2(1/x), which is frequently assumed in the literature, already leads to a violation of the Froissart bound on sigma^{nu N}.

World data of J/psi production consolidate NRQCD factorization at NLO

We calculate the cross sections of inclusive J/psi production in photoproduction and two-photon scattering, involving both direct and resolved photons, and in e^+e^- annihilation at next-to-leading order (NLO) within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate ^1S_0^{[8]}, ^3S_1^{[8]}, and ^3P_J^{[8]} color-octet (CO) states. Exploiting also our previous results on hadroproduction, we perform a combined fit of the respective CO long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) to all available high-quality data of inclusive J/psi production, from KEKB, LEP~II, RHIC, HERA, the Tevatron, and the LHC, comprising a total of 194 data points from 26 data sets.

Analytic result for the one-loop scalar pentagon integral with massless propagators

The method of dimensional recurrences proposed by one of the authors [1,2] is applied to the evaluation of the pentagon-type scalar integral with on-shell external legs and massless internal lines. For the first time, an analytic result valid for arbitrary space-time dimension d and five arbitrary kinematic variables is presented. An explicit expression in terms of the Appell hypergeometric function F_3 and the Gauss hypergeometric function_2F_1, both admitting one-fold integral representations, is given. In the case when one kinematic variable vanishes, the integral reduces to a combination of Gauss hypergeometric functions_2F_1. For the case when one scalar invariant is large compared to the others, the asymptotic values of the integral in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions_2F_1 are presented in d = 2 - 2 epsilon, 4 - 2 epsilon, and 6 - 2 epsilon dimensions. For multi-Regge kinematics, the asymptotic value of the integral in d = 4 - 2 epsilon dimensions is given in terms of the Appell function F_3 and the Gauss hypergeometric function_2F_1.

Complete next-to-leading-order corrections to J/psi photoproduction in nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics

We calculate the cross section of inclusive direct J/psi photoproduction at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, for the first time including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate ^1S_0^[8], ^3S_1^[8], and ^3P_J^[8] color-octet states. A comparison of our results to recent H1 data suggests that the color octet mechanism is indeed realized in J/psi photoproduction, although the predictivity of our results still suffers from uncertainties in the color-octet long-distance matrix elements.

Differential reduction of generalized hypergeometric functions from Feynman diagrams: One-variable case

The differential-reduction algorithm, which allows one to express generalized hypergeometric functions with parameters of arbitrary values in terms of such functions with parameters whose values differ from the original ones by integers, is discussed in the context of evaluating Feynman diagrams. Where this is possible, we compare our results with those obtained using standard techniques. It is shown that the criterion of reducibility of multiloop Feynman integrals can be reformulated in terms of the criterion of reducibility of hypergeometric functions. The relation between the numbers of master integrals obtained by differential reduction and integration by parts is discussed.

J/psi production with NRQCD: HERA, Tevatron, RHIC and LHC

We report on our recent calculation of the inclusive direct photo- and hadroproduction of the J/psi meson at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. We fit the color-octet (CO) long-distance matrix elements <O^(J/psi)(1S0[8])>, <O^(J/psi)(3S1[8])> and <O^(J/psi)(3P0[8])> to the transverse momentum (p_T) distributions measured by CDF at Fermilab Tevatron and by H1 at DESY HERA and show that they also successfully describe the p_T distributions from PHENIX at BNL RHIC and CMS at the CERN LHC as well as the photon-proton c.m. energy and (with worse agreement) the inelasticity distributions from H1. In all experiments, the CO processes are shown to be indispensable.

On-shell renormalization of the mixing matrices in Majorana neutrino theories

We generalize a recently proposed on-shell approach to renormalize the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix to the case of an extended leptonic sector that includes Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the framework of the seesaw mechanism. An important property of this formulation is the gauge independence of both the renormalized and bare lepton mixing matrices. Also, the texture zero in the neutrino mass matrix is preserved.

Charmed-Hadron Fragmentation Functions from CERN LEP1 Revisited

In Phys. Rev. D 58, 014014 (1998) and 71, 094013 (2005), we determined non-perturbative D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, D_s^+, and Lambda_c^+ fragmentation functions, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme, by fitting e^+e^- data taken by the OPAL Collaboration at CERN LEP1. The starting points for the evolution in the factorization scale mu were taken to be mu_0 = 2m_Q, where Q = c,b. For the reader's convenience, in this Addendum, we repeat this analysis for mu_0 = m_Q, where the flavor thresholds of modern sets of parton density functions are located.

Prompt J/psi plus photon associated electroproduction at DESY HERA

We study the production of a prompt J/psi meson in association with a prompt photon in ep deep-inelastic scattering within the factorisation formalism of non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) and demonstrate that this process provides a clean probe of the colour-octet mechanism at DESY HERA. Our analysis is based on an updated set of non-perturbative NRQCD matrix elements obtained through a joint fit to data on charmonium inclusive hadroproduction from runs I and II at the Fermilab Tevatron.

Prompt J/psi production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering

We calculate the cross section of J/psi inclusive production in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering via the weak charged current within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. The hadronic system produced in association with the J/psi meson can be of light-quark origin or contain charm. We take into account both direct production and feed-down from directly-produced heavier charmonia. We provide the cross sections of all contributing partonic subprocesses in analytic form. We present theoretical predictions for the J/psi transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions, which can be measured in current neutrino-nucleon scattering experiments at CERN and Fermilab, and possibly at the future electron-proton collider THERA at DESY. We find the cross section to be at the edge of observability at DESY HERA.

J/psi Inclusive Production in nu N Neutral-Current Deep-Inelastic Scattering

We calculate the cross section of J/psi inclusive production in neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering via the weak neutral current within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. Besides J/psi single production via the Z-gluon fusion mechanism, we also consider J/psi plus hadron-jet associated production. We take into account both direct production and feed-down from directly-produced heavier charmonia. We present theoretical predictions for the J/psi transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions, which can be measured in the CHORUS and NOMAD experiments at CERN, including conservative error estimates. In order to interpret a recent CHORUS measurement of the total cross section, we also estimate the contribution due to J/psi prompt production via diffractive processes using the vector-meson dominance model.

QCD Corrections to t anti-b H^- Associated Production in e^+ e^- Annihilation

We calculate the QCD corrections to the cross section of e^+ e^- -> t anti-b H^- and its charge-conjugate counterpart within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. This process is particularly important if m_t < m_H + m_b and root(s) < 2 m_H, so that t -> b H^+ and e^+ e^- -> H^+ H^- are not allowed kinematically. Large logarithmic corrections that arise in the on-mass-shell scheme of quark mass renormalization, especially from the t anti-b H^- Yukawa coupling for large values of tan(beta), are resummed by adopting the modified minimal-subtraction scheme, so that the convergence behavior of the perturbative expansion is improved. The inclusion of the QCD corrections leads to a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainties due to scheme and scale dependences.

J/psi Inclusive Production in ep Deep-Inelastic Scattering at DESY HERA

We calculate the cross section of J/psi plus jet associated production in ep deep-inelastic scattering within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. Our analytic results disagree with previous analyses, both for the colour-singlet and colour-octet channels. Our theoretical predictions agree reasonably well with recent data taken by the H1 Collaboration at DESY HERA, significantly better than those obtained within the colour-singlet model.

Theoretical Aspects of Inclusive Light-Hadron Production

We summarize the key results of a recent global analysis of inclusive single-charged-hadron production in high-energy colliding-beam experiments. In the framework of the parton model of quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order (NLO), fragmentation functions (FFs) for charged pions, charged kaons, and (anti) protons are extracted from experimental data of e^+e^- annihilation at the Z-boson resonance and at centre-of-mass energy root(s) = 29 GeV. This fit also yields a new NLO value for the strong-coupling constant, namely alpha_s^(5)(M_Z) = 0.1170 +- 0.0073. The scaling violations encoded in the FFs through the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations are tested by confronting (e^+e^-)-annihilation data from DESY DORIS, DESY PETRA, and CERN LEP2 with NLO predictions based on these FFs. Comparisons of p p-bar data from CERN S p p-bar S and the Fermilab Tevatron, gamma p data from DESY HERA, and gamma gamma data from LEP2 with the corresponding NLO predictions allow us to test the universality of the FFs predicted by the factorization theorem.

Order alpha^7 ln(1/alpha) Contribution to Positronium Hyperfine Splitting

The logarithmically enhanced alpha^7 ln(1/alpha) contribution to the hyperfine splitting of the positronium ground-state energy levels is calculated in the framework of dimensionally regularized nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. The correction is negative and amounts to about 1/3 of the leading logarithmic alpha^7 ln^2(1/alpha) one. The discrepancy between the experimental measurements and the theoretical prediction is reduced.

Polarization of Prompt J/psi at the Tevatron

The polarization of prompt J/psi at the Fermilab Tevatron is calculated within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework. The contribution from radiative decays of P-wave charmonium states decreases, but does not eliminate, the transverse polarization at large transverse momentum. The angular distribution parameter alpha for leptonic decays of the J/ψis predicted to increase from near 0 at p_T = 5 GeV to about 0.5 at p_T = 20 GeV. The prediction is consistent with measurements by the CDF Collaboration at intermediate values of p_T, but disagrees by about 3 standard deviations at the largest values of p_T measured.

Polarized J/psi from chi_{cJ} and psi' Decays at the Tevatron

We calculate the partonic cross sections for the hadroproduction of polarized chi_{cJ} mesons using the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. We also describe how the polarization is passed on to the J/psi mesons in the radiative feed-down chi_{cJ} -> J/psi + gamma and in the double-cascade decays of psi' mesons via chi_{cJ} intermediate states. These represent the missing ingredients needed to predict the polarization of prompt J/psi mesons at the Fermilab Tevatron.

TEVATRON-HERA Colour-Octet Charmonium Anomaly Versus Higher-Order QCD Effects

Approximately taking into account the higher-order effects due to multiple-gluon initial-state radiation, we extract from the latest Tevatron data of prompt J/psi hadroproduction the leading colour-octet matrix elements within the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage. We find that the matrix elements which describe the formation of J/psi mesons from colour-octet cc-bar pairs in the angular-momentum states ^{2S+1}L_J = ^1S_0 and ^3P_J, with J = 0,1,2, which are responsible for the excess of the predicted cross section of inelastic J/psi photoproduction over the existing HERA data at high values of the inelasticity variable z, are significantly reduced. We conclude that it is premature to proclaim a discrepancy between the Tevatron and HERA measurements of inclusive J/psi production in the NRQCD framework. We also consider J/psi mesons originating from the radiative feed down of promptly produced chi_{cJ} mesons.

Two-Loop O(alpha_s G_F M_Q^2) Heavy-Quark Corrections to the Interactions between Higgs and Intermediate Bosons

By means of a low-energy theorem, we analyze at O(alpha_s G_F M_Q^2) the shifts in the Standard-Model W^+W^-H and ZZH couplings induced by virtual high-mass quarks, Q, with M_Q >> M_Z, M_H, which includes the top quark. Invoking the improved Born approximation, we then find the corresponding corrections to various four- and five-point Higgs-boson production and decay processes which involve the W^+W^-H and ZZH vertices with one or both of the gauge bosons being connected to light-fermion currents, respectively. This includes e^+e^- -> f anti-f H via Higgs-strahlung, via W^+W^- fusion (with f = nu_e), and via ZZ fusion (with f = e), as well as H -> 2V -> 4f (with V = W, Z).

SEMILEPTONIC LEPTON-NUMBER/FLAVOUR-VIOLATING tau DECAYS IN MAJORANA NEUTRINO MODELS

Motivated by the recent investigation of neutrinoless $τ$-lepton decays by the CLEO collaboration, we perform a systematic analysis of such decays in a possible new-physics scenario with heavy Dirac/Majorana neutrinos, including heavy-neutrino nondecoupling effects, finite quark masses, and quark as well as meson mixings. We find that $τ$-lepton decays into an electron or muon and a pseudoscalar or vector meson can have branching ratios close to the experimental sensitivity. Numerical estimates show that the predominant decay modes of this kind are $τ^-\to e^-ϕ$, $τ^-\to e^-ρ^0$, and $τ^-\to e^-π^0$, with branching ratios of order $10^{-6}$.

Two-Loop ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ Corrections to Higgs Production at LEP

We evaluate the two-loop ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ correction to the $ZZH$ coupling in the Standard Model by means of a low-energy theorem, assuming that the top quark is much heavier than the Higgs boson. We then construct a heavy-top-quark effective Lagrangian for the $ZZH$ interaction that accommodates the ${\cal O}(G_Fm_t^2)$ and ${\cal O}(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ corrections and derive from it the corresponding corrections to the $H\to ZZ$ decay as well as those to Higgs-boson production at LEP1, via $Z\to f\bar fH$, and at LEP2, via $e^+e^-\to ZH$. In all cases, the leading ${\cal O}(G_Fm_t^2)$ terms are considerably screened by their QCD corrections, if the on-shell renormalization scheme with $G_F$ as a basic parameter is employed.

Status of Higher-Order Corrections in the Standard Electroweak Theory

We review recent theoretical progress in the computation of radiative corrections beyond one loop within the standard model of electroweak interactions, both in the gauge and Higgs sectors. In the gauge sector, we discuss universal corrections of $Ø(G_F^2M_H^2M_W^2)$, $Ø(G_F^2m_t^4)$, $Ø(α_sG_FM_W^2)$, $Ø(α_s^2G_Fm_t^2)$, and those due to virtual $t\bar t$ threshold effects, as well as specific corrections to $Γ\left(Z\to b\bar b\right)$ of $Ø(G_F^2m_t^4)$, $Ø(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$, and $Ø(α_s^3)$ including finite-$m_b$ effects. We also present an update of the hadronic contributions to $Δα$. Theoretical uncertainties, other than those due to the lack of knowledge of $M_H$ and $m_t$, are estimated. In the Higgs sector, we report on the $Ø(α_sG_Fm_t^2)$ corrections to $Γ\left(H\to f\bar f\,\right)$ including those which are specific for the $b\bar b$ mode, the $Ø(α_s^2)$ corrections to $Γ\left(H\to q\bar q\right)$ including the finite-$m_q$ terms, and the $Ø(α_s)$ corrections to $Γ(H\to gg)$.

Two-loop ${\rm O}\left(G_F^2M_H^4\right)$ corrections to the fermionic decay rates of the Higgs boson

We calculate the dominant ${\rm O}\left(G_F^2M_H^4\right)$ two-loop electroweak corrections to the fermi\-onic decay widths of a heavy Higgs boson in the Standard Model. Use of the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem reduces the problem to one involving only the physical Higgs boson $H$ and the Goldstone bosons $w^\pm$ and $z$ of the unbroken theory. The two-loop corrections are opposite in sign to the one-loop electroweak corrections, exceed the one-loop corrections in magnitude for $M_H>1114\ {\rm GeV}$, and increase in relative magnitude as $M_H^2$ for larger values of $M_H$. We conclude that the perturbation expansion in powers of $G_FM_H^2$ breaks down for $M_H\approx 1100\ {\rm GeV}$. We discuss briefly the QCD and the complete one-loop electroweak corrections to $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}, \,t\bar{t}$, and comment on the validity of the equivalence theorem. Finally we note how a very heavy Higgs boson could be described in a phenomenological manner.
