SN 2015bq: A Luminous Type Ia Supernova with Early Flux Excess

We present optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of a luminous type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2015bq characterized by the early flux excess. This SN reaches a B-band absolute magnitude at $M_B = -19.68 \pm 0.41$ mag and a peak bolometric luminosity at $L = (1.75 \pm 0.37) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with a relatively small post-maximum decline rate [$Δm_{15}(B) = 0.82 \pm 0.05$ mag]. The flux excess observed in the light curves of SN 2015bq a few days after the explosion, especially seen in the UV bands, might be due to the radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni mixed into the surface. The radiation from the decay of the surface $^{56}$Ni heats the outer layer of this SN. It produces blue $U-B$ color followed by monotonically reddening in the early phase, dominated iron-group lines, and weak intermediate-mass elements absorption features in the early spectra. The scenario of enhanced $^{56}$Ni in the surface is consistent with a large amount of $^{56}$Ni ($M_{ \rm ^{56}{\rm Ni}}$ = 0.97 $\pm 0.20$ $M_{\odot}$) synthesized during the explosion. The properties of SN 2015bq are found to locate between SN 1991T and SN 1999aa, suggesting the latter two subclasses of SNe Ia may have a common origin.

Gaussian Process Modeling $\it{Fermi}$-LAT $γ$-ray Blazar Variability: A Sample of Blazars with $γ$-ray Quasi-periodicities

Blazar variability may be driven by stochastic processes. On the other hand, quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) behaviors are recently reported to be detected in $\it{Fermi}$-LAT data of blazars. However, the significances of these QPO signals given by traditional Fourier-like methods are still questioned. We analyze $γ$-ray light curves of the QPO blazars with two Gaussian process methods, CARMA and $\it{celerite}$, to examine the appropriateness of Gaussian processes for characterizing $γ$-ray light curves of blazars and the existence of the reported QPOs. We collect a sample of 27 blazars with possible $γ$-ray periodicity and generate their $\sim11$ years $\it{Fermi}$-LAT light curves. We apply the Gaussian process models to the $γ$-ray light curves, and build their intrinsic power spectral densities (PSDs). The results show that in general the $γ$-ray light curves can be characterized by CARMA and $\textit{celerite}$ models, indicating that $γ$-ray variabilities of blazars are essentially Gaussian processes. The resulting PSDs are generally the red noise shapes with slopes between $-0.6$ and $-1.7$. Possible evidence for the $γ$-ray QPOs in PKS 0537$-$441 and PG 1553$+$113 are found in the Gaussian process modelings.

On the Injection of Relativistic Electrons in the Jet of 3C 279

The acceleration of electrons in 3C 279 is investigated through analyzing the injected electron energy distribution (EED) in a time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton + external Compton emission model. In this model, it is assumed that relativistic electrons are continuously injected into the emission region, and the injected EED [$Q_e^\prime(γ^\prime)$] follows a single power-law form with low- and high-energy cutoffs $\rm γ_{min}'$ and $\rm γ_{max}'$, respectively, and the spectral index $n$, i.e, $Q_e^\prime(γ^\prime)\proptoγ^{\prime-n}$. This model is applied to 14 quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 3C 279. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting technique is performed to obtain the best-fitting parameters and the uncertainties on the parameters. The results show that the injected EED is well constrained in each state. The value of $n$ is in the range of 2.5 to 3.8, which is larger than that expected by the classic non-relativistic shock acceleration. However, the large value of $n$ can be explained by the relativistic oblique shock acceleration. The flaring activity seems to be related to an increased acceleration efficiency, reflected in an increased $γ'_{\rm min}$ and electron injection power.

Limitation of the Least Square Method in the Evaluation of Dimension of Fractal Brownian Motions

With the standard deviation for the logarithm of the re-scaled range $\langle |F(t+τ)-F(t)|\rangle$ of simulated fractal Brownian motions $F(t)$ given in a previous paper \cite{q14}, the method of least squares is adopted to determine the slope, $S$, and intercept, $I$, of the log$(\langle |F(t+τ)-F(t)|\rangle)$ vs $\rm{log}(τ)$ plot to investigate the limitation of this procedure. It is found that the reduced $χ^2$ of the fitting decreases with the increase of the Hurst index, $H$ (the expectation value of $S$), which may be attributed to the correlation among the re-scaled ranges. Similarly, it is found that the errors of the fitting parameters $S$ and $I$ are usually smaller than their corresponding standard deviations. These results show the limitation of using the simple least square method to determine the dimension of a fractal time series. Nevertheless, they may be used to reinterpret the fitting results of the least square method to determine the dimension of fractal Brownian motions more self-consistently. The currency exchange rate between Euro and Dollar is used as an example to demonstrate this procedure and a fractal dimension of 1.511 is obtained for spans greater than 30 transactions.

Emitting Electron Spectra and Acceleration Processes in the Jet of PKS 0447-439

We investigate the electron energy distributions (EEDs) and the corresponding acceleration processes in the jet of PKS 0447$-$439 and estimate its redshift through modeling its observed spectral energy distribution (SED) in the frame of a one-zone synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) model. Three EEDs formed in different acceleration scenarios are assumed: the power-law with exponential cut-off (PLC) EED (shock-acceleration scenario or the case of the EED approaching equilibrium in the stochastic-acceleration scenario), the log-parabolic (LP) EED (stochastic-acceleration scenario and the acceleration dominating) and the broken power law (BPL) EED (no acceleration scenario), and then the corresponding fluxes of both synchrotron and SSC are calculated. The model is applied to PKS 0447-439 and modeling SEDs are compared to the observed SED of this object by using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. Calculating results show that PLC model fails to fit the observed SED well, while the LP and BPL models give comparably good fits for the observed SED. The results indicate that it is possible that stochastic acceleration process acts in the emitting region of PKS 0447-439 and the EED is far from equilibrium (acceleration dominating) or no acceleration process works (in the emitting region). The redshift of PKS 0447-439 is also estimated in our fitting, and $z=0.16\pm0.05$ for LP case and $z=0.17\pm0.04$ for BPL case.

Evolution of luminosity function and obscuration of AGN: connecting X-ray and Infrared

We present a detailed comparison between the 2-10 keV hard X-ray and infrared (IR) luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The composite X-ray to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGN used for connecting the hard X-ray LF (HXLF) and IR LF (IRLF) are modeled with a simple but well tested torus model based on the radiative transfer and photoionization code CLOUDY. Four observational determinations of the evolution of 2-10 keV HXLF and six evolution models of the obscured type-2 AGN fraction ($f_2$) have been considered. The 8.0 and 15 \micron LFs for the total, unobscured type-1 and obscured type-2 AGN are predicted from the HXLFs, and then compared with the measurements currently available. We find that the IRLFs predicted from HXLFs tend to underestimate the number of the most IR-luminous AGN. This is independent of the choices of HXLF and $f_2$, and even more obvious for the HXLFs recently measured. We show that the discrepancy between the HXLFs and IRLFs can be largely resolved when the anticorrelation between the UV to X-ray slope $α_{\mathrm{ox}}$ and UV luminosity $L_{\rm UV}$ is appropriately considered. We also discuss other possible explanations for the discrepancy, such as the missing population of Compton-thick AGN and possible contribution of star-formation in the host to the mid-IR. Meanwhile, we find that the HXLFs and IRLFs of AGN can be more consistent with each other if the obscuration mechanisms of quasars and Seyferts are assumed to be different, corresponding to their different triggering and fueling mechanisms. More accurate measurements of the IRLFs of AGN, especially that determined at smaller redshift bins and more accurately separated to that for type-1 and type-2, are very helpful for clarifying these interesting issues.

Multi-wavelength emission from 3C 66A: clues on its redshift and gamma-ray emission location

The quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength emission of TeV blazar 3C 66A is studied by using a one-zone multi-component leptonic jet model. It is found that the quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) of 3C 66A can be well reproduced, especially its {\it Fermi}-LAT first 3 months average spectrum can be well reproduced by the synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) component plus external Compton (EC) component of the broad line region (BLR). Clues on its redshift and gamma-ray emission location are obtained. The results indicate the following. (i) On the redshift; The theoretical intrinsic TeV spectra can be predicted by extrapolating the reproduced GeV spectra. Through comparing this extrapolated TeV spectra with the extragalactic background light (EBL) corrected observed TeV spectra, it is suggested that the redshift of 3C 66A could be between 0.1 and 0.3, the most likely value is $\sim$ 0.2. (ii) On the gamma-ray emission location; To well reproduce the GeV emission of 3C 66A under different assumptions on BLR, the gamma-ray emission region is always required to be beyond the inner zone of BLR. The BLR absorption effect on gamma-ray emission confirms this point.

The Correlated Multi-color Optical Variations of BL Lac Object S5 0716+714

S5 0716+714 is a well-studied BL Lac object in the sky. Verifying the existence of correlations among the flux variations in different bands serves as an important tool to investigate the emission processes. To examine the possible existence of a lag between variations in different optical bands on this source, we employ a discrete correlation function (DCF) analysis on the light curves. In order to obtain statistically meaningful values for the cross-correlation time lags and their related uncertainties, we perform Monte Carlo simulations called "flux redistribution/random subset selection" (FR/RSS). Our analysis confirms that the variations in different optical light curves are strongly correlated. The time lags show a hint of the variations in high frequency band leading those in low frequency band of the order of a few minutes.

Implications of Bulk Velocity Structures in AGN Jets

The synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models and External Compton (EC) models of AGN jets with continually longitudinal and transverse bulk velocity structures are constructed. The observed spectra show complex and interesting patterns in different velocity structures and viewing angles. These models are used to calculate the synchrotron and inverse Compton spectra of two typical BL Lac objects (BLO) (Mrk 421 and 0716+714) and one Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) (3c 279), and to discuss the implications of jet bulk velocity structures in unification of the BLO and FR I radio galaxies (FRI). By calculating the synchrotron spectra and SSC spectra of BL Lac object jets with continually bulk velocity structures, we find that the spectra are much different from ones in jets with uniform velocity structure under the increase of viewing angles. The unification of BLO and FRI is less constrained by viewing angles and would be imprinted by velocity structures intrinsic to the jet themselves. By considering the jets with bulk velocity structures constrained by apparent speed, we discuss the velocity structures imprinted on the observed spectra for different viewing angles. We find that the spectra are greatly impacted by longitudinal velocity structures, becasue the volume elements are compressed or expanded. Finally, we present the EC spectra of FSRQs and FR II radio galaxies (FRII) and find that they are weakly affected by velocity structures compared to synchrotron and SSC spectra.
