KAM for the nonlinear beam equation 1: small-amplitude solutions

In this paper we prove a KAM result for the non linear beam equation on the d-dimensional torus utt+Δ2u+mu+g(x,u)=0 ,t∈R,  x∈Td,(∗)u_{tt}+Δ^2 u+m u + g(x,u)=0\ ,\quad t\in { \mathbb{R}} , \; x\in {\mathbb T}^d, \qquad \qquad (*) where g(x,u)=4u3+O(u4)g(x,u)=4u^3+ O(u^4). Namely, we show that, for generic mm, most of the small amplitude invariant finite dimensional tori of the linear equation (∗)g=0(*)_{g=0}, written as the system ut=−v,vt=Δ2u+mu, u_t=-v,\quad v_t=Δ^2 u+mu, , persist as invariant tori of the nonlinear equation (∗)(*), re-written similarly. If d≥2d\ge2, then not all the persisted tori are linearly stable, and we construct explicit examples of partially hyperbolic invariant tori. The unstable invariant tori, situated in the vicinity of the origin, create around them some local instabilities, in agreement with the popular belief in nonlinear physics that small-amplitude solutions of space-multidimensonal hamiltonian PDEs behave in a chaotic way. The proof uses an abstract KAM theorem from another our publication.

Existence and stability of solitons for fully discrete approximations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this paper we study the long time behavior of a discrete approximation in time and space of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the real line. More precisely, we consider a symplectic time splitting integrator applied to a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additional Dirichlet boundary conditions on a large interval. We give conditions ensuring the existence of a numerical soliton which is close in energy norm to the continuous soliton. Such result is valid under a CFL condition between the time and space stepsizes. Furthermore we prove that if the initial datum is symmetric and close to the continuous soliton, then the associated numerical solution remains close to the orbit of the continuous soliton for very long times.

A Nekhoroshev type theorem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the d-dimensional torus.

We prove a Nekhoroshev type theorem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t=-Δu+V\star u+\partial_{\bar u}g(u,\bar u)\, \quad x\in \T^d, $$ where VV is a typical smooth potential and gg is analytic in both variables. More precisely we prove that if the initial datum is analytic in a strip of width ρ>0ρ>0 with a bound on this strip equals to $\eps$ then, if $\eps$ is small enough, the solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation above remains analytic in a strip of width ρ/2ρ/2 and bounded on this strip by $C\eps$ during very long time of order $ \eps^{-α|\ln \eps|^β}$ for some constants C>0C> 0, α>0α>0 and β<1β<1.

On the energy exchange between resonant modes in nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation iψt=−ψxx±2cos⁡2x ∣ψ∣2ψ,x∈S1, t∈R iψ_t= -ψ_{xx}\pm 2\cos 2x \ |ψ|^2ψ,\quad x\in S^1,\ t\in \R and we prove that the solution of this equation, with small initial datum $ψ_0=\e (\cos x+\sin x)$, will periodically exchange energy between the Fourier modes eixe^{ix} and e−ixe^{-ix}. This beating effect is described up to time of order $\e^{-9/4}$ while the frequency is of order $\e^2$. We also discuss some generalizations.

Normal Forms for Semilinear Quantum Harmonic Oscillators

We consider the semilinear harmonic oscillator $$iψ_t=(-Δ+\va{x}^{2} +M)ψ+\partial_2 g(ψ,\bar ψ), \quad x\in \R^d, t\in \R$$ where MM is a Hermite multiplier and gg a smooth function globally of order 3 at least. We prove that such a Hamiltonian equation admits, in a neighborhood of the origin, a Birkhoff normal form at any order and that, under generic conditions on MM related to the non resonance of the linear part, this normal form is integrable when d=1d=1 and gives rise to simple (in particular bounded) dynamics when d≥2d\geq 2. As a consequence we prove the almost global existence for solutions of the above equation with small Cauchy data. Furthermore we control the high Sobolev norms of these solutions.

Quasi invariant modified Sobolev norms for semi linear reversible PDEs

We consider a general class of infinite dimensional reversible differential systems. Assuming a non resonance condition on the linear frequencies, we construct for such systems almost invariant pseudo norms that are closed to Sobolev-like norms. This allows us to prove that if the Sobolev norm of index ss of the initial data z0z_0 is sufficiently small (of order εε) then the Sobolev norm of the solution is bounded by 2ε2ε during very long time (of order ε−rε^{-r} with rr arbitrary). It turns out that this theorem applies to a large class of reversible semi linear PDEs including the non linear Schrödinger equation on the d-dimensional torus. We also apply our method to a system of coupled NLS equations which is reversible but not Hamiltonian. We also notice that for the same class of reversible systems we can prove a Birkhoff normal form theorem that in turn implies the same bounds on the Sobolev norms. Nevertheless the technics that we use to prove the existence of quasi invariant pseudo norms is much more simple and direct.
