A global Nekhoroshev theorem for particles on the torus with time dependent Hamiltonian

We prove a $C^\infty$ global version of Nekhoroshev theorem for time dependent Hamiltonians in $R^d\times T^d$. Precisely, we prove a result showing that for all times the actions of the unperturbed systems are bounded by a constant times $ \langle t\rangle^ε$. We apply the result to the dynamics of a charged particle in $T^d$ subject to a time dependent electromagnetic field.

Almost global existence for some Hamiltonian PDEs with small Cauchy data on general tori

In this paper we prove a result of almost global existence for some abstract nonlinear PDEs on flat tori and apply it to some concrete equations, namely a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a convolution potential, a beam equation and a quantum hydrodinamical equation. We also apply it to the stability of plane waves in NLS. The main point is that the abstract result is based on a nonresonance condition much weaker than the usual ones, which rely on the celebrated Bourgain's Lemma which provides a partition of the "resonant sites" of the Laplace operator on irrational tori.

A simple proof for a $C^\infty$ Nekhoroshev theorem

We prove a $C^\infty$ version of the Nekhoroshev's estimate on the stability times of the actions in close to integrable Hamiltonian systems. The proof we give is a variant of the original Nekhoroshev's proof and it consists in first conjugating, globally in the phase space, and up to a small remainder, the system to a normal form. Then we perform the geometric part of the proof in the normalized variables. As a result, we obtain a proof which is simpler than the usual ones.

Hamiltonian studies on counter-propagating water waves

We use a Hamiltonian normal form approach to study the dynamics of the water wave problem in the small amplitude long wave regime (KdV regime). If $μ$ is the small parameter corresponding to the inverse of the wave length, we show that the normal form at order $μ^5$ consists of two decoupled equation, one describing right going waves and the other describing left going waves. Performing a further non Hamiltonian transformation we conjugate each of these equations to a linear combination of the first three equations in the KdV hierarchy. At order $μ^7$ we find nontrivial terms coupling the two counter-propagating waves.

Convergence to normal forms of integrable PDEs

In an infinite dimensional Hilbert space we consider a family of commuting analytic vector fields vanishing at the origin and which are nonlinear perturbations of some fundamental linear vector fields. We prove that one can construct by the method of Poincaré normal form a local analytic coordinate transformation near the origin transforming the family into a normal form. The result applies to the KdV and NLS equations and to the Toda lattice with periodic boundary conditions. One gets existence of Birkhoff coordinates in a neighbourhood of the origin. The proof is obtained by directly estimating, in an iterative way, the terms of the Poincaré normal form and of the transformation to it, through a rapid convergence algorithm.

A large probability averaging Theorem for the defocousing NLS

We consider the nonlinear Schroedinger equation on the one dimensional torus, with a defocousing polynomial nonlinearity and study the dynamics corresponding to initial data in a set of large measure with respect to the Gibbs measure. We prove that along the corresponding solutions the modulus of the Fourier coefficients is approximately constant for times of order $β^{2+ς}$, $β$ being the inverse of the temperature and $ς$ a positive number (we prove $ς= 1/10$). The proof is obtained by adapting to the context of Gibbs measure for PDEs some tools of Hamiltonian perturbation theory.

Reducibility of 1-d Schrödinger equation with time quasiperiodic unbounded perturbations, II

We study the Schrödinger equation on $\R$ with a potential behaving as $x^{2l}$ at infinity, $l\in[1,+\infty)$ and with a small time quasiperiodic perturbation. We prove that, if the perturbation belongs to a class of unbounded symbols including smooth potentials and magnetic type terms with controlled growth at infinity, then the system is reducible.

From Toda to KdV

For periodic Toda chains with a large number $N$ of particles we consider states which are $N^{-2}$-close to the equilibrium and constructed by discretizing arbitrary given $C^2-$functions with mesh size $N^{-1}.$ Our aim is to describe the spectrum of the Jacobi matrices $L\_N$ appearing in the Lax pair formulation of the dynamics of these states as $N \to \infty$. To this end we construct two Hill operators $H\_\pm$ -- such operators come up in the Lax pair formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries equation -- and prove by methods of semiclassical analysis that the asymptotics as $N \rightarrow \infty $ of the eigenvalues at the edges of the spectrum of $L\_N$ are of the form $\pm (2-(2N)^{-2} λ^\pm \_n + \cdots )$ where $(λ^\pm \_n)\_{n \geq 0}$ are the eigenvalues of $H\_\pm $. In the bulk of the spectrum, the eigenvalues are $o(N^{-2})$-close to the ones of the equilibrium matrix. As an application we obtain asymptotics of a similar type of the discriminant, associated to $L\_N$.

Normal Form and Energy Conservation of High Frequency Subsystems Without Nonresonance Conditions

We consider a system in which some high frequency harmonic oscillators are coupled with a slow system. We prove that up to very long times the energy of the high frequency system changes only by a small amount. The result we obtain is completely independent of the resonance relations among the frequencies of the fast system. More in detail, denote by $ε^{-1}$ the smallest high frequency. In the first part of the paper we apply the main result of [BG93] to prove almost conservation of the energy of the high frequency system over times exponentially long with $ {ε^{-1/n}} $ ($n$ being the number of fast oscillators). In the second part of the paper we give e new self-contained proof of a similar result which however is valid only over times of order $ε^{-N}$ with an arbitrary $N$. Such a second result is very similar to the main result of the paper [GHL13], which actually was the paper which stimulated our work.

An averaging theorem for FPU in the thermodynamic limit

Consider an FPU chain composed of $N\gg 1$ particles, and endow the phase space with the Gibbs measure corresponding to a small temperature $β^{-1}$. Given a fixed $K<N$, we construct $K$ packets of normal modes whose energies are adiabatic invariants (i.e., are approximately constant for times of order $β^{1-a}$, $a>0$) for initial data in a set of large measure. Furthermore, the time autocorrelation function of the energy of each packet does not decay significantly for times of order $β$. The restrictions on the shape of the packets are very mild. All estimates are uniform in the number $N$ of particles and thus hold in the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$, $β>0$.

Asymptotic stability of ground states in some Hamiltonian PDEs with symmetry

We consider a ground state (soliton) of a Hamiltonian PDE. We prove that if the soliton is orbitally stable, then it is also asymptotically stable. The main assumptions are transversal nondegeneracy of the manifold of the ground states, linear dispersion (in the form of Strichartz estimates) and nonlinear Fermi Golden Rule. We allow the linearization of the equation at the soliton to have an arbitrary number of eigenvalues. The theory is tailor made for the application to the translational invariant NLS in space dimension 3. The proof is based on the extension of some tools of the theory of Hamiltonian systems (reduction theory, Darboux theorem, normal form) to the case of systems invariant under a symmetry group with unbounded generators.

Dynamics of periodic Toda chains with a large number of particles

For periodic Toda chains with a large number $N$ of particles we consider states which are $N^{-2}-$close to the equilibrium and constructed by discretizing any given $C^2-$functions with mesh size $N^{-1}$. For such states we derive asymptotic expansions of the Toda frequencies $(ω^N_n)_{0 < n < N}$ and the actions $(I^N_n)_{0 < n < N},$ both listed in the standard way, in powers of $N^{-1}$ as $N \to \infty$. %listed in accordance with the ordering of the frequencies at the equilibrium, %$(2 \sin \frac{nπ} {N})_{0 < n < N}$. At the two edges $n \sim 1$ and $N -n \sim 1$, the expansions of the frequencies are computed up to order $N^{-3}$ with an error term of higher order. Specifically, the coefficients of the expansions of $ω^N_n$ and $ω^N_{N-n}$ at order $N^{-3}$ are given by a constant multiple of the n'th KdV frequencies $ω^-_n$ and $ω^+_n$ of two periodic potentials, $q_{-}$ respectively $q_+$, constructed in terms of the states considered. The frequencies $ω^N_n$ for $n$ away from the edges are shown to be asymptotically close to the frequencies of the equilibrium. For the actions $(I^N_n)_{0 < n < N},$ asymptotics of a similar nature are derived.

Asymptotic behavior of an elastic satellite with internal friction

We study the dynamics of an elastic body whose shape and position evolve due to the gravitational forces exerted by a pointlike planet. The main result is that, if all the deformations of the satellite dissipate some energy, then under a suitable nondegeneracy condition there are only three possible outcomes for the dynamics: (i) the orbit of the satellite is unbounded, (ii) the satellite falls on the planet, (iii) the satellite is captured in synchronous resonance i.e. its orbit is asymptotic to a motion in which the barycenter moves on a circular orbit, and the satellite moves rigidly, always showing the same face to the planet. The result is obtained by making use of LaSalle's invariance principle and by a careful kinematic analysis showing that energy stops dissipating only on synchronous orbits. We also use in quite an extensive way the fact that conservative elastodynamics is a Hamiltonian system invariant under the action of the rotation group.

Asymptotic stability of breathers in some Hamiltonian networks of weakly coupled oscillators

We consider a Hamiltonian chain of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators. It is well known that if the coupling is weak enough then the system admits families of periodic solutions exponentially localized in space (breathers). In this paper we prove asymptotic stability in energy space of such solutions. The proof is based on two steps: first we use canonical perturbation theory to put the system in a suitable normal form in a neighborhood of the breather, second we use dispersion in order to prove asymptotic stability. The main limitation of the result rests in the fact that the nonlinear part of the on site potential is required to have a zero of order 8 at the origin. From a technical point of view the theory differs from that developed for Hamiltonian PDEs due to the fact that the breather is not a relative equilibrium of the system.

Existence and stability of solitons for fully discrete approximations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this paper we study the long time behavior of a discrete approximation in time and space of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the real line. More precisely, we consider a symplectic time splitting integrator applied to a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additional Dirichlet boundary conditions on a large interval. We give conditions ensuring the existence of a numerical soliton which is close in energy norm to the continuous soliton. Such result is valid under a CFL condition between the time and space stepsizes. Furthermore we prove that if the initial datum is symmetric and close to the continuous soliton, then the associated numerical solution remains close to the orbit of the continuous soliton for very long times.
