Solvable conjugacy class graph of groups

In this paper we introduce the graph $Γ_{sc}(G)$ associated with a group $G$, called the solvable conjugacy class graph (abbreviated as SCC-graph), whose vertices are the nontrivial conjugacy classes of $G$ and two distinct conjugacy classes $C, D$ are adjacent if there exist $x \in C$ and $y \in D$ such that $\langle x, y\rangle$ is solvable. We discuss the connectivity, girth, clique number, and several other properties of the SCC-graph. One of our results asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups whose SCC-graph has given clique number~$d$, and we find explicitly the list of such groups with $d=2$.

Bounding p-Brauer characters in finite groups with two conjugacy classes of p-elements

Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the principal p-block of G is always at least 2\sqrt{p-1}+1-k_p(G), where k_p(G) is the number of conjugacy classes of p-elements of G. This indeed is a consequence of the celebrated Alperin weight conjecture and known results on bounding the number of p-regular classes in finite groups.

Generalized bases of finite groups

Motivated by recent results on the minimal base of a permutation group, we introduce a new local invariant attached to arbitrary finite groups. More precisely, a subset Delta of a finite group G is called a p-base (where p is a prime) if Delta generates a p-group and C_G(Delta) is p-nilpotent. Building on results of Halasi-Maróti, we prove that p-solvable groups possess p-bases of size 3 for every prime p. For other prominent groups we exhibit p-bases of size 2. In fact, we conjecture the existence of p-bases of size 2 for every finite group. Finally, the notion of p-bases is generalized to blocks and fusion systems.

Character tables and defect groups

Let B be a block of a finite group G with defect group D. We prove that the exponent of the center of D is determined by the character table of G. In particular, we show that D is cyclic if and only if B contains a "large" family of irreducible p-conjugate characters. More generally, for abelian D we obtain an explicit formula for the exponent of D in terms of character values. In small cases even the isomorphism type of D is determined in this situation. Moreover, it can read off from the character table whether |D/D'|=4 where D' denotes the commutator subgroup of D. We also propose a new characterization of nilpotent blocks in terms of the character table.

Orders generated by character values

Let $K:=\mathbb{Q}(G)$ be the number field generated by the complex character values of a finite group $G$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. In this paper we investigate the suborder $\mathbb{Z}[G]$ of $\mathbb{Z}_K$ generated by the character values of $G$. We prove that every prime divisor of the order of the finite abelian group $\mathbb{Z}_K/\mathbb{Z}[G]$ divides $|G|$. Moreover, if $G$ is nilpotent, we show that the exponent of $\mathbb{Z}_K/\mathbb{Z}[G]$ is a proper divisor of $|G|$ unless $G=1$. We conjecture that this holds for arbitrary finite groups $G$.

Loewy lengths of centers of blocks

Let B be a block of a finite group with respect to an algebraically closed field F of characteristic p>0. In a recent paper, Otokita gave an upper bound for the Loewy length LL(ZB) of the center ZB of B in terms of a defect group D of B. We refine his methods in order to prove the optimal bound LL(ZB)\le LL(FD) whenever D is abelian. We also improve Otokita's bound for non-abelian defect groups. As an application we classify the blocks B such that LL(ZB)\ge |D|/2.

On centers of blocks with one simple module

Let G be a finite group, and let B be a non-nilpotent block of G with respect to an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. Suppose that B has an elementary abelian defect group of order 16 and only one simple module. The main result of this paper describes the algebra structure of the center of B. This is motivated by a similar analysis of a certain 3-block of defect 2 in [Kessar, 2012].

Broué's isotypy conjecture for the sporadic groups and their covers and automorphism groups

Let B be a p-block of a finite group G with abelian defect group D such that S\unlhd G, S'=S, G/Z(S)\le\Aut(S) and S/Z(S) is a sporadic simple group. We show that B is isotypic to its Brauer correspondent in N_G(D) in the sense of Broué. This has been done by [Rouquier, 1994] for principal blocks and it remains to deal with the non-principal blocks.

Cartan matrices and Brauer's k(B)-Conjecture IV

In this note we give applications of recent results coming mostly from the third paper of this series. It is shown that the number of irreducible characters in a $p$-block of a finite group with abelian defect group $D$ is bounded by $|D|$ (Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture) provided $D$ has no large elementary abelian direct summands. Moreover, we verify Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture for all blocks with minimal non-abelian defect groups. This extends previous results by various authors.

Refinements of the orthogonality relations for blocks

For a block B of a finite group G there are well-known orthogonality relations for the generalized decomposition numbers. We refine these relations by expressing the generalized decomposition numbers with respect to an integral basis of a certain cyclotomic field. After that, we use the refinements in order to give upper bounds for the number of irreducible characters (of height 0) in B. In this way we generalize results from [Héthelyi-Külshammer-Sambale, 2014]. These ideas are applied to blocks with abelian defect groups of rank 2. Finally, we address a recent conjecture by Navarro.

Cartan matrices and Brauer's k(B)-Conjecture III

For a block $B$ of a finite group we prove that $k(B)\le(\det C-1)/l(B)+l(B)\le\det C$ where $k(B)$ (respectively $l(B)$) is the number of irreducible ordinary (respectively Brauer) characters of $B$, and $C$ is the Cartan matrix of $B$. As an application, we show that Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture holds for every block with abelian defect group $D$ and inertial quotient $T$ provided there exists an element $u\in D$ such that $C_T(u)$ acts freely on $D/<u>$. This gives a new proof of Brauer's Conjecture for abelian defect groups of rank at most $2$. We also prove the conjecture in case $l(B)\le 3$.

The Alperin-McKay Conjecture for metacyclic, minimal non-abelian defect groups

We prove the Alperin-McKay Conjecture for all $p$-blocks of finite groups with metacyclic, minimal non-abelian defect groups. These are precisely the metacyclic groups whose derived subgroup have order $p$. In the special case $p=3$, we also verify Alperin's Weight Conjecture for these defect groups. Moreover, in case $p=5$ we do the same for the non-abelian defect groups $C_{25}\rtimes C_{5^n}$. The proofs do not rely on the classification of the finite simple groups.

2-blocks with abelian defect groups

We give a classification, up to Morita equivalence, of 2-blocks of quasi-simple groups with abelian defect groups. As a consequence, we show that Donovan's conjecture holds for elementary abelian 2-groups, and that the entries of the Cartan matrices are bounded in terms of the defect for arbitrary abelian 2-groups. We also show that a block with defect groups of the form $C_{2^m} \times C_{2^m}$ for $m \geq 2$ has one of two Morita equivalence types and hence is Morita equivalent to the Brauer correspondent block of the normaliser of a defect group. This completes the analysis of the Morita equivalence types of 2-blocks with abelian defect groups of rank 2, from which we conclude that Donovan's conjecture holds for such 2-groups. A further application is the completion of the determination of the number of irreducible characters in a block with abelian defect groups of order 16. The proof uses the classification of finite simple groups.

Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture for metacyclic defect groups

We prove that Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture holds for p-blocks of finite groups with metacyclic defect groups. If the defect group is nonabelian and contains a cyclic maximal subgroup, we obtain the distribution into p-conjugate and p-rational irreducible characters. Then the Alperin-McKay Conjecture follows provided p=3. Along the way we verify a few other conjectures. Finally we consider the extraspecial defect group of order p^3 and exponent p^2 for an odd prime more closely. Here for blocks with inertial index 2 we prove the Galois-Alperin-McKay Conjecture by computing k_0(B). Then for p\le 11 also Alperin's Weight Conjecture follows. This improves some results of [Gao, 2012], [Holloway-Koshitani-Kunugi, 2010] and [Hendren, 2005].

Blocks with defect group D_{2^n} * C_{2^m}

We determine the numerical invariants of blocks with defect group D_{2^n} * C_{2^m} = Q_{2^n} * C_{2^m} (central product), where n > 2 and m > 1. As a consequence, we prove Brauer's k(B)-conjecture, Olsson's conjecture (and more generally Eaton's conjecture), Brauer's height zero conjecture, the Alperin-McKay conjecture, Alperin's weight conjecture and Robinson's ordinary weight conjecture for these blocks. Moreover, we show that the gluing problem has a unique solution in this case.

Blocks with defect group D_{2^n} x C_{2^m}

We determine the numerical invariants of blocks with defect group D_{2^n}\times C_{2^m}, where D_{2^n} denotes a dihedral group of order 2^n and C_{2^m} denotes a cyclic group of order 2^m. This generalizes Brauer's results for m=0.

2-Blocks with minimal nonabelian defect groups

We study numerical invariants of 2-blocks with minimal nonabelian defect groups. These groups were classified by Rédei. If the defect group is also metacyclic, then the block invariants are known. In the remaining cases there are only two (infinite) families of "interesting" defect groups. In all other cases the blocks are nilpotent. We prove Brauer's k(B)-conjecture and the Olsson-conjecture for all 2-blocks with minimal nonabelian defect groups. For one of the two families we also show that Alperin's weight conjecture and Dade's conjecture is satisfied. This paper is a part of the author's PhD thesis.

Cartan matrices and Brauer's k(B)-conjecture

We show (among other things) that Brauer's k(B)-conjecture holds for defect groups with are central extensions of metacyclic 2-groups by cyclic groups. The same holds for defect groups which contain a central cyclic subgroup of index at most 9. In particular the k(B)-conjecture holds for 2-blocks of defect at most 4 and 3-blocks of defect at most 3. As a byproduct we obtain the block invariants of 2-blocks with minimal nonmetacyclic defect groups.
