Improved bounds for Hadwiger's covering problem via thin-shell estimates

A central problem in discrete geometry, known as Hadwiger's covering problem, asks what the smallest natural number $N\left(n\right)$ is such that every convex body in ${\mathbb R}^{n}$ can be covered by a union of the interiors of at most $N\left(n\right)$ of its translates. Despite continuous efforts, the best general upper bound known for this number remains as it was more than sixty years ago, of the order of ${2n \choose n}n\ln n$. In this note, we improve this bound by a sub-exponential factor. That is, we prove a bound of the order of ${2n \choose n}e^{-c\sqrt{n}}$ for some universal constant $c>0$. Our approach combines ideas from previous work by Artstein-Avidan and the second named author with tools from Asymptotic Geometric Analysis. One of the key steps is proving a new lower bound for the maximum volume of the intersection of a convex body $K$ with a translate of $-K$; in fact, we get the same lower bound for the volume of the intersection of $K$ and $-K$ when they both have barycenter at the origin. To do so, we make use of measure concentration, and in particular of thin-shell estimates for isotropic log-concave measures. Using the same ideas, we establish an exponentially better bound for $N\left(n\right)$ when restricting our attention to convex bodies that are $ψ_{2}$. By a slightly different approach, an exponential improvement is established also for classes of convex bodies with positive modulus of convexity.

On the thin-shell conjecture for the Schatten classes

We study the thin-shell conjecture for the Schatten classes. In particular, we establish the conjecture for the operator norm; we also improve on the best known bound for the Schatten classes, due to Barthe and Cordero-Erausquin [F. Barthe and D. Cordero-Erausquin, "Invariances in variance estimates", Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society 106 (2013): 33-64], for a few more cases. Moreover, we show that a necessary condition for the conjecture to be true for any of the Schatten classes is a rather strong negative correlation property: this implies of course that, for the cases for which we already have the conjecture (as for example for the operator norm), but in fact also for all the cases for which we can get a better estimate than the one in [F. Barthe and D. Cordero-Erausquin, "Invariances in variance estimates"], this negative correlation property follows. For the proofs, our starting point is techniques that were employed for the Schatten classes with regard to other problems in [H. König, M. Meyer and A. Pajor, "The isotropy constants of the Schatten classes are bounded", Mathematische Annalen 312 (1998): 773-783] and [O. Guédon and G. Paouris, "Concentration of mass on the Schatten classes", Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré, Probabilité et Statistiques 43 (2007): 87-99].

Geometry of the $L_q$-centroid bodies of an isotropic log-concave measure

We study some geometric properties of the $L_q$-centroid bodies $Z_q(μ)$ of an isotropic log-concave measure $μ$ on ${\mathbb R}^n$. For any $2\ls q\ls\sqrt{n}$ and for $\varepsilon \in (\varepsilon_0(q,n),1)$ we determine the inradius of a random $(1-\varepsilon)n$-dimensional projection of $Z_q(μ)$ up to a constant depending polynomially on $\varepsilon $. Using this fact we obtain estimates for the covering numbers $N(\sqrt{\smash[b]{q}}B_2^n,tZ_q(μ))$, $t\gr 1$, thus showing that $Z_q(μ)$ is a $β$-regular convex body. As a consequence, we also get an upper bound for $M(Z_q(μ))$.

Further unifying two approaches to the hyperplane conjecture

We compare and combine two approaches that have been recently introduced by Dafnis and Paouris [DP] and by Klartag and Milman [KM] with the aim of providing bounds for the isotropic constants of convex bodies. By defining a new hereditary parameter for all isotropic log-concave measures, we are able to show that the method in [KM], and the apparently stronger conclusions it leads to, can be extended in the full range of the 'weaker' assumptions of [DP]. The new parameter we define is related to the highest dimension k\leq n-1 in which one can always find marginals of an n-dimensional isotropic measure which have bounded isotropic constant.
