Initial value problem in string-inspired nonlocal field theory

We consider a nonlocal scalar field theory inspired by the tachyon action in open string field theory. The Lorentz-covariant action is characterized by a parameter $ξ^2$ that quantifies the amount of nonlocality. Restricting to purely time-dependent configurations, we show that a field redefinition perturbative in $ξ^2$ reduces the action to a local two-derivative theory with a $ξ^2$-dependent potential. This picture is supported by evidence that the redefinition maps the wildly oscillating rolling tachyon solutions of the nonlocal theory to conventional rolling in the new scalar potential. For general field configurations we exhibit an obstruction to a local Lorentz-covariant formulation, but we can still achieve a formulation local in time, as well as a light-cone formulation. These constructions provide an initial value formulation and a Hamiltonian. Their causality is consistent with a lack of superluminal behavior in the nonlocal theory.

Minimal-area metrics on the Swiss cross and punctured torus

The closed string field theory minimal-area problem asks for the conformal metric of least area on a Riemann surface with the condition that all non-contractible closed curves have length at least 2π. Through every point in such a metric there is a geodesic that saturates the length condition, and saturating geodesics in a given homotopy class form a band. The extremal metric is unknown when bands of geodesics cross, as it happens for surfaces of non-zero genus. We use recently proposed convex programs to numerically find the minimal-area metric on the square torus with a square boundary, for various sizes of the boundary. For large enough boundary the problem is equivalent to the "Swiss cross" challenge posed by Strebel. We find that the metric is positively curved in the two-band region and flat in the single-band regions. For small boundary the metric develops a third band of geodesics wrapping around it, and has both regions of positive and negative curvature. This surface can be completed to provide the minimal-area metric on a once-punctured torus, representing a closed-string tadpole diagram.

Non-perturbative de Sitter vacua via $α'$ corrections

The higher-derivative $α'$ corrections consistent with $O(d,d)$ duality invariance can be completely classified for cosmological, purely time-dependent backgrounds. This result is used to show that there are duality invariant theories featuring string-frame de Sitter vacua as solutions that are non-perturbative in $α'$, thus suggesting that classical string theory may realize de Sitter solutions in an unexpected fashion.

On the curious spectrum of duality invariant higher-derivative gravity

We analyze the spectrum of the exactly duality and gauge invariant higher-derivative double field theory. While this theory is based on a chiral CFT and does not correspond to a standard string theory, our analysis illuminates a number of issues central in string theory. The full quadratic action is rewritten as a two-derivative theory with additional fields. This allows for a simple analysis of the spectrum, which contains two massive spin-2 ghosts and massive scalars, in addition to the massless fields. Moreover, in this formulation, the massless or tensionless limit $α'\rightarrow \infty$ is non-singular and leads to an enhanced gauge symmetry. We show that the massive modes can be integrated out exactly at the quadratic level, leading to an infinite series of higher-derivative corrections. Finally, we present a ghost-free massive extension of linearized double field theory, which employs a novel mass term for the dilaton and metric.

Three-point Functions in Duality-Invariant Higher-Derivative Gravity

Doubled $α'$-geometry is the simplest higher-derivative gravitational theory with exact global duality symmetry. We use the double metric formulation of this theory to compute on-shell three-point functions to all orders in $α'$. A simple pattern emerges when comparing with the analogous bosonic and heterotic three-point functions. As in these theories, the amplitudes factorize. The theory has no Gauss-Bonnet term, but contains a Riemann-cubed interaction to second order in $α'$.

Double Metric, Generalized Metric and $α'$-Geometry

We relate the unconstrained `double metric' of the `$α'$-geometry' formulation of double field theory to the constrained generalized metric encoding the spacetime metric and b-field. This is achieved by integrating out auxiliary field components of the double metric in an iterative procedure that induces an infinite number of higher-derivative corrections. As an application we prove that, to first order in $α'$ and to all orders in fields, the deformed gauge transformations are Green-Schwarz-deformed diffeomorphisms. We also prove that to first order in $α'$ the spacetime action encodes precisely the Green-Schwarz deformation with Chern-Simons forms based on the torsionless gravitational connection. This seems to be in tension with suggestions in the literature that T-duality requires a torsionful connection, but we explain that these assertions are ambiguous since actions that use different connections are related by field redefinitions.

Heterotic Effective Action and Duality Symmetries Revisited

The dimensional reduction of heterotic supergravity with gauge fields truncated to the Cartan subalgebra exhibits a continuous O(d,d+16;R) global symmetry, related to the O(d,d+16;Z) T-duality of heterotic strings on a d-torus. The O(d,d+16;R) symmetry is not present, however, if the supergravity reduction is done including the full set of E_8 x E_8 or SO(32) gauge fields. We analyze which duality symmetries are realized to all orders in $α'$ in the proper effective field theories for the massless string states. We find a universal O(d,d;R) symmetry, also predicted by double field theory. We confirm this by giving a novel formulation of the dimensionally reduced supergravity in terms of O(d,d) multiplets, and we discuss cases of symmetry enhancement.

T-duality Constraints on Higher Derivatives Revisited

We ask to what extent are the higher-derivative corrections of string theory constrained by T-duality. The seminal early work by Meissner tests T-duality by reduction to one dimension using a distinguished choice of field variables in which the bosonic string action takes a Gauss-Bonnet-type form. By analyzing all field redefinitions that may or may not be duality covariant and may or may not be gauge covariant we extend the procedure to test T-duality starting from an action expressed in arbitrary field variables. We illustrate the method by showing that it determines uniquely the first-order $α'$ corrections of the bosonic string, up to terms that vanish in one dimension. We also use the method to glean information about the ${\cal O}(α'^2)$ corrections in the double field theory with Green-Schwarz deformation.

Double Field Theory at Order $α'$

We investigate $α'$ corrections of bosonic strings in the framework of double field theory. The previously introduced "doubled $α'$-geometry" gives $α'$-deformed gauge transformations arising in the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism but does not apply to bosonic strings. These require a different deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket which governs the gauge structure. This is revealed by examining the $α'$ corrections in the gauge algebra of closed string field theory. We construct a four-derivative cubic double field theory action invariant under the deformed gauge transformations, giving a first glimpse of the gauge principle underlying bosonic string $α'$ corrections. The usual metric and $b$-field are related to the duality covariant fields by non-covariant field redefinitions.

Doubled α'-Geometry

We develop doubled-coordinate field theory to determine the α' corrections to the massless sector of oriented bosonic closed string theory. Our key tool is a string current algebra of free left-handed bosons that makes O(D,D) T-duality manifest. While T-dualities are unchanged, diffeomorphisms and b-field gauge transformations receive corrections, with a gauge algebra given by an α'-deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket. The action is cubic in a double metric field, an unconstrained extension of the generalized metric that encodes the gravitational fields. Our approach provides a consistent truncation of string theory to massless fields with corrections that close at finite order in α'.

Green-Schwarz mechanism and $α'$-deformed Courant brackets

We establish that the unusual two-form gauge transformations needed in the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism fit naturally into an $α'$-deformed generalized geometry. The algebra of gauge transformations is a consistent deformation of the Courant bracket and features a nontrivial modification of the diffeomorphism group. This extension of generalized geometry emerged from a `doubled $α'$-geometry', which provides a construction of exactly gauge and T-duality invariant $α'$ corrections to the effective action.

The Spacetime of Double Field Theory: Review, Remarks, and Outlook

We review double field theory (DFT) with emphasis on the doubled spacetime and its generalized coordinate transformations, which unify diffeomorphisms and b-field gauge transformations. We illustrate how the composition of generalized coordinate transformations fails to associate. Moreover, in dimensional reduction, the O(d,d) T-duality transformations of fields can be obtained as generalized diffeomorphisms. Restricted to a half-dimensional subspace, DFT includes `generalized geometry', but is more general in that local patches of the doubled space may be glued together with generalized coordinate transformations. Indeed, we show that for certain T-fold backgrounds with non-geometric fluxes, there are generalized coordinate transformations that induce, as gauge symmetries of DFT, the requisite O(d,d;Z) monodromy transformations. Finally we review recent results on the α' extension of DFT which, reduced to the half-dimensional subspace, yields intriguing modifications of the basic structures of generalized geometry.

Large Gauge Transformations in Double Field Theory

Finite gauge transformations in double field theory can be defined by the exponential of generalized Lie derivatives. We interpret these transformations as `generalized coordinate transformations' in the doubled space by proposing and testing a formula that writes large transformations in terms of derivatives of the coordinate maps. Successive generalized coordinate transformations give a generalized coordinate transformation that differs from the direct composition of the original two. Instead, it is constructed using the Courant bracket. These transformations form a group when acting on fields but, intriguingly, do not associate when acting on coordinates.

On the Riemann Tensor in Double Field Theory

Double field theory provides T-duality covariant generalized tensors that are natural extensions of the scalar and Ricci curvatures of Riemannian geometry. We search for a similar extension of the Riemann curvature tensor by developing a geometry based on the generalized metric and the dilaton. We find a duality covariant Riemann tensor whose contractions give the Ricci and scalar curvatures, but that is not fully determined in terms of the physical fields. This suggests that α' corrections to the effective action require α' corrections to T-duality transformations and/or generalized diffeomorphisms. Further evidence to this effect is found by an additional computation that shows that there is no T-duality invariant four-derivative object built from the generalized metric and the dilaton that reduces to the square of the Riemann tensor.

Open superstring field theory I: gauge fixing, ghost structure, and propagator

The WZW form of open superstring field theory has linearized gauge invariances associated with the BRST operator Q and the zero mode eta_0 of the picture minus-one fermionic superconformal ghost. We discuss gauge fixing of the free theory in a simple class of gauges using the Faddeev-Popov method. We find that the world-sheet ghost number of ghost and antighost string fields ranges over all integers, except one, and at any fixed ghost number, only a finite number of picture numbers appear. We calculate the propagators in a variety of gauges and determine the field-antifield content and the free master action in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Unlike the case of bosonic string field theory, the resulting master action is not simply related to the original gauge-invariant action by relaxing the constraint on the ghost and picture numbers.

Double Field Theory of Type II Strings

We use double field theory to give a unified description of the low energy limits of type IIA and type IIB superstrings. The Ramond-Ramond potentials fit into spinor representations of the duality group O(D,D) and field-strengths are obtained by acting with the Dirac operator on the potentials. The action, supplemented by a Spin^+(D,D)-covariant self-duality condition on field strengths, reduces to the IIA and IIB theories in different frames. As usual, the NS-NS gravitational variables are described through the generalized metric. Our work suggests that the fundamental gravitational variable is a hermitian element of the group Spin(D,D) whose natural projection to O(D,D) gives the generalized metric.

These lecture notes are based on three lectures, each ninety minutes long, given by the author at the "International School on Strings and Fundamental Physics" which took place in Garching/Munich from July 25 to August 6, 2010. These lectures, aimed at graduate students, require only a basic knowledge of string theory and give a simple introduction to double field theory. These notes were prepared by Marco Baumgartl and Nicolas Moeller.

Unification of Type II Strings and T-duality

We present a unified description of the low-energy limits of type II string theories. This is achieved by a formulation that doubles the space-time coordinates in order to realize the T-duality group O(10,10) geometrically. The Ramond-Ramond fields are described by a spinor of O(10,10), which couples to the gravitational fields via the Spin(10,10) representative of the so-called generalized metric. This theory, which is supplemented by a T-duality covariant self-duality constraint, unifies the type II theories in that each of them is obtained for a particular subspace of the doubled space.

Background independent action for double field theory

Double field theory describes a massless subsector of closed string theory with both momentum and winding excitations. The gauge algebra is governed by the Courant bracket in certain subsectors of this double field theory. We construct the associated nonlinear background-independent action that is T-duality invariant and realizes the Courant gauge algebra. The action is the sum of a standard action for gravity, antisymmetric tensor, and dilaton fields written with ordinary derivatives, a similar action for dual fields with dual derivatives, and a mixed term that is needed for gauge invariance.

Generalized metric formulation of double field theory

The generalized metric is a T-duality covariant symmetric matrix constructed from the metric and two-form gauge field and arises in generalized geometry. We view it here as a metric on the doubled spacetime and use it to give a simple formulation with manifest T-duality of the double field theory that describes the massless sector of closed strings. The gauge transformations are written in terms of a generalized Lie derivative whose commutator algebra is defined by a double field theory extension of the Courant bracket.

One-Loop Riemann Surfaces in Schnabl Gauge

Due to a peculiar behavior at the open string midpoint, loop diagrams in Schnabl gauge were expected to fail to produce the relevant closed string moduli. We find that closed string moduli are generated because the Riemann surfaces are built with slanted wedges: semi-infinite strips whose edges have parameterizations related by scaling. We examine in detail one-loop string diagrams and find that the closed string modulus is always produced. Moreover, the conformal maps simplify so greatly that both closed and open moduli become simple calculable functions of the Schwinger parameters, a simplification that occurs neither in Siegel gauge nor in light-cone gauge.

Linear b-Gauges for Open String Fields

Motivated by Schnabl's gauge choice, we explore open string perturbation theory in gauges where a linear combination of antighost oscillators annihilates the string field. We find that in these linear b-gauges different gauge conditions are needed at different ghost numbers. We derive the full propagator and prove the formal properties which guarantee that the Feynman diagrams reproduce the correct on-shell amplitudes. We find that these properties can fail due to the need to regularize the propagator, and identify a large class of linear b-gauges for which they hold rigorously. In these gauges the propagator has a non-anomalous Schwinger representation and builds Riemann surfaces by adding strip-like domains. Projector-based gauges, like Schnabl's, are not in this class of gauges but we construct a family of regular linear b-gauges which interpolate between Siegel gauge and Schnabl gauge.

Solving Open String Field Theory with Special Projectors

Schnabl recently found an analytic expression for the string field tachyon condensate using a gauge condition adapted to the conformal frame of the sliver projector. We propose that this construction is more general. The sliver is an example of a special projector, a projector such that the Virasoro operator Ł_0 and its BPZ adjoint Ł*_0 obey the algebra [Ł_0, Ł*_0] = s (Ł_0 + Ł*_0), with s a positive real constant. All special projectors provide abelian subalgebras of string fields, closed under both the *-product and the action of Ł_0. This structure guarantees exact solvability of a ghost number zero string field equation. We recast this infinite recursive set of equations as an ordinary differential equation that is easily solved. The classification of special projectors is reduced to a version of the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with piecewise constant data on the boundary of a disk.

A Closed String Tachyon Vacuum ?

In bosonic closed string field theory the "tachyon potential" is a potential for the tachyon, the dilaton, and an infinite set of massive fields. Earlier computations of the potential did not include the dilaton and the critical point formed by the quadratic and cubic interactions was destroyed by the quartic tachyon term. We include the dilaton contributions to the potential and find that a critical point survives and appears to become more shallow. We are led to consider the existence of a closed string tachyon vacuum, a critical point with zero action that represents a state where space-time ceases to be dynamical. Some evidence for this interpretation is found from the study of the coupled metric-dilaton-tachyon effective field equations, which exhibit rolling solutions in which the dilaton runs to strong coupling and the Einstein metric undergoes collapse.

Dilaton Deformations in Closed String Field Theory

The dilaton theorem implies that the contribution to the dilaton potential from cubic interactions of all levels must be cancelled by the elementary quartic self-coupling of dilatons. We use this expectation to test the quartic structure of closed string field theory and to study the rules for level expansion. We explain how to use the results of Moeller to compute quartic interactions of states that, just like the dilaton, are neither primary nor have a simple ghost dependence. Our analysis of cancellations is made richer by discussing simultaneous dilaton and marginal deformations. We find evidence for two facts: as the level is increased quartic interactions become suppressed and closed string field theory may be able to describe arbitrarily large dilaton deformations.

Rolling Closed String Tachyons and the Big Crunch

We study the low-energy effective field equations that couple gravity, the dilaton, and the bulk closed string tachyon of bosonic closed string theory. We establish that whenever the tachyon induces the rolling process, the string metric remains fixed while the dilaton rolls to strong coupling. For negative definite potentials we show that this results in an Einstein metric that crunches the universe in finite time. This behavior is shown to be rather generic even if the potentials are not negative definite. The solutions are reminiscent of those in the collapse stage of a cyclic universe cosmology where scalar field potentials with negative energies play a central role.

Tachyon potentials, star products and universality

We develop an efficient recursive method to evaluate the tachyon potential using the relevant universal subalgebra of the open string star algebra. This method, using off-shell versions of Virasoro Ward identities, avoids explicit computation of conformal transformations of operators and does not require a choice of background. We illustrate the procedure with a pedagogic computation of the level six tachyon potential in an arbitrary gauge, and the evaluation of a few simple star products. We give a background independent construction of the so-called identity of the star algebra, and show how it fits into family of string fields generating a commutative subalgebra.

Effective Tachyon Dynamics in Superstring Theory

A recently proposed \ell=\infty field theory model of tachyon dynamics for unstable bosonic D-branes has been shown to arise as the two-derivative truncation of (boundary)-string field theory. Using an \ell\to \infty limit appropriate to stable kinks we obtain a model for the tachyon dynamics on unstable D-branes or D-brane anti-D-brane pairs of superstring theory. The tachyon potential is a positive definite even function of the tachyon, and at the stable global minima there is no on-shell dynamics. The kink solution mimics nicely the properties of stable D-branes: the spectrum of the kink consists of infinite levels starting at zero mass, with spacing double the value of the tachyon mass-squared. It is natural to expect that this model will arise in (boundary) superstring field theory.

Exceptional groups from open strings

We consider type IIB theory compactified on a two-sphere in the presence of mutually nonlocal 7-branes. The BPS states associated with the gauge vectors of exceptional groups are seen to arise from open strings connecting the 7-branes, and multi-pronged open strings capable of ending on more than two 7-branes. These multi-pronged strings are built from open string junctions that arise naturally when strings cross 7-branes. The different string configurations can be multiplied as traditional open strings, and are shown to generate the structure of exceptional groups.

N=1 Dualities of SO and USp Gauge Theories and T-Duality of String Theory

Extending recent work on SU gauge theory, we engineer local string models for N=1 four-dimensional SO and USp gauge theories coupled to matter in the fundamental. The local models are type IIB orientifolds with D7 branes on a curved orientifold 7-plane, and matter realized by adding D3 branes on the orientifold plane. The Higgs branches of the SO and USp theories can be matched with the moduli spaces of SO and USp instantons on the compact four-dimensional part of the D7 branes worldvolume. The R-charge of the gauge theories is identified with a U(1) symmetry on the worldvolume of an Euclidean D3 brane instanton. We argue that the quantum field theory dualities of these gauge theories arise from T-dualities of type IIB strings exchanging D7 and D3 charges. A crucial role is played by the induced D3 charge of D7 branes and an orientifold 7-plane, both partially compactified on a $Z_2$ orbifold of K3.

On the Picture Dependence of Ramond-Ramond Cohomology

Closed string physical states are BRST cohomology classes computed on the space of states annihilated by $b_0^-$. Since $b_0^-$ does not commute with the operations of picture changing, BRST cohomologies at different pictures need not agree. We show explicitly that Ramond-Ramond (RR) zero-momentum physical states are inequivalent at different pictures, and prove that non-zero momentum physical states are equivalent in all pictures. We find that D-brane states represent BRST classes that are nonpolynomial on the superghost zero modes, while RR gauge fields appear as polynomial BRST classes. We also prove that in $x$-cohomology, the cohomology where the zero mode of the spatial coordinates is included, there is a unique ghost-number one BRST class responsible for the Green-Schwarz anomaly, and a unique ghost number minus one BRST class associated with RR charge.

Background Independent Algebraic Structures in Closed String Field Theory

We construct a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra on moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. This algebra is background independent in that it makes no reference to a state space of a conformal field theory. Conformal theories define a homomorphism of this algebra to the BV algebra of string functionals. The construction begins with a graded-commutative free associative algebra $\C$ built from the vector space whose elements are orientable subspaces of moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces. The typical element here is a surface with several connected components. The operation $Δ$ of sewing two punctures with a full twist is shown to be an odd, second order derivation that squares to zero. It follows that $(\C, Δ)$ is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. We introduce the odd operator $δ= \partial + \hbarΔ$, where $\partial$ is the boundary operator. It is seen that $δ^2=0$, and that consistent closed string vertices define a cohomology class of $δ$. This cohomology class is used to construct a Lie algebra on a quotient space of $\C$. This Lie algebra gives a manifestly background independent description of a subalgebra of the closed string gauge algebra.

Off-shell Closed String Amplitudes: Towards a Computation of the Tachyon Potential

We derive an explicit formula for the evaluation of the classical closed string action for any off-shell string field, and for the calculation of arbitrary off-shell amplitudes. The formulae require a parametrization, in terms of some moduli space coordinates, of the family of local coordinates needed to insert the off-shell states on Riemann surfaces. We discuss in detail the evaluation of the tachyon potential as a power series in the tachyon field. The expansion coefficients in this series are shown to be geometrical invariants of Strebel quadratic differentials whose variational properties imply that closed string polyhedra, among all possible choices of string vertices, yield a tachyon potential which is as small as possible order by order in the string coupling constant. Our discussion emphasizes the geometrical meaning of off-shell amplitudes.

Algebraic Structures and Differential Geometry in 2D String Theory

A careful treatment of closed string BRST cohomology shows that there are more discrete states and associated symmetries in $D=2$ string theory than has been recognized hitherto. The full structure, at the $SU(2)$ radius, has a natural description in terms of abelian gauge theory on a certain three dimensional cone $Q$. We describe precisely how symmetry currents are constructed from the discrete states, explaining the role of the ``descent equations.'' In the uncompactified theory, we compute the action of the symmetries on the tachyon field, and isolate the features that lead to nonlinear terms in this action. The resulting symmetry structure is interpreted in terms of a homotopy Lie algebra.

Closed String Field Theory: Quantum Action and the BV Master Equation

The complete quantum theory of covariant closed strings is constructed in detail. The action is defined by elementary vertices satisfying recursion relations that give rise to Jacobi-like identities for an infinite chain of string field products. The genus zero string field algebra is the homotopy Lie algebra $L_\infty$, and the higher genus algebraic structure implies the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) master equation. From these structures on the off-shell state space, we show how to derive the $L_\infty$ algebra, and the BV equation on physical states, recently constructed in d=2 string theory. The string diagrams are surfaces with minimal area metrics, foliated by closed geodesics of length $2π$. These metrics generalize quadratic differentials in that foliation bands can cross. The string vertices are succinctly characterized; they include the surfaces whose foliation bands are all of height smaller than $2π$. --While this is not a review paper, an effort was made to give a fairly complete and accessible account of the quantum closed string field theory.--

Interpolating String Field Theories

A minimal area problem imposing different length conditions on open and closed curves is shown to define a one parameter family of covariant open-closed quantum string field theories. These interpolate from a recently proposed factorizable open-closed theory up to an extended version of Witten's open string field theory capable of incorporating on shell closed strings. The string diagrams of the latter define a new decomposition of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with punctures and boundaries based on quadratic differentials with both first order and second order poles.

Target Space Duality as a Symmetry of String Field Theory

Toroidal backgrounds for bosonic strings are used to understand target space duality as a symmetry of string field theory and to study explicitly issues in background independence. Our starting point is the notion that the string field coordinates $X(σ)$ and the momenta $P(σ)$ are background independent objects whose field algebra is always the same; backgrounds correspond to inequivalent representations of this algebra. We propose classical string field solutions relating any two toroidal backgrounds and discuss the space where these solutions are defined. String field theories formulated around dual backgrounds are shown to be related by a homogeneous field redefinition, and are therefore equivalent, if and only if their string field coupling constants are identical. Using this discrete equivalence of backgrounds and the classical solutions we find discrete symmetry transformations of the string field leaving the string action invariant. These symmetries, which are spontaneously broken for generic backgrounds, are shown to generate the full group of duality symmetries, and in general are seen to arise from the string field gauge group.
