Localization of defects via residence time measures

We show that residence time measure can be used to identify the geometrical and transmission properties of a defect along a path. The model we study is based on a one--dimensional simple random walk. The sites of the lattice are regular, i.e., the jumping probabilities are the same in each site, except for a site, called \emph{defect}, where the jumping probabilities are different. At each side of the lattice an absorbing site is present. We show that by measuring the fraction of particles crossing the channel and/or the typical time they need to cross it, it is possible to identify the main features of the lattice and of the defect site, namely, the jumping probabilities at regular and at the defect sites and the position of the defect in the lattice.

Envelopes of conditional probabilities extending a strategy and a prior probability

Any strategy and prior probability together are a coherent conditional probability that can be extended, generally not in a unique way, to a full conditional probability. The corresponding class of extensions is studied and a closed form expression for its envelopes is provided. Then a topological characterization of the subclasses of extensions satisfying the further properties of full disintegrability and full strong conglomerability is given and their envelopes are studied.

Bayes meets Krylov: preconditioning CGLS for underdetermined systems

The solution of linear inverse problems when the unknown parameters outnumber data requires addressing the problem of a nontrivial null space. After restating the problem within the Bayesian framework, a priori information about the unknown can be utilized for determining the null space contribution to the solution. More specifically, if the solution of the associated linear system is computed by the Conjugate Gradient for Least Squares (CGLS) method, the additional information can be encoded in the form of a right preconditioner. In this paper we study how the right preconditioned changes the Krylov subspaces where the CGLS iterates live, and draw a tighter connection between Bayesian inference and Krylov subspace methods. The advantages of a Krylov-meet-Bayes approach to the solution of underdetermined linear inverse problems is illustrated with computed examples.

Identification of discrete concentration graph models with one hidden binary variable

Conditions are presented for different types of identifiability of discrete variable models generated over an undirected graph in which one node represents a binary hidden variable. These models can be seen as extensions of the latent class model to allow for conditional associations between the observable random variables. Since local identification corresponds to full rank of the parametrization map, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the rank to be full everywhere in the parameter space. The condition is based on the topology of the undirected graph associated to the model. For non-full rank models, the obtained characterization allows us to find the subset of the parameter space where the identifiability breaks down.
