Reverse inequality for the riesz transforms on Riemannian manifolds

Let MM be a complete Riemannian manifold satisfying the doubling volume condition for geodesic balls and LqL^q scaled Poincaré inequalities on suitable remote balls for some q<2q<2. We prove the inequality ∥Δ1/2f∥p≲∥∇f∥p\left\Vert Δ^{1/2}f\right\Vert_p\lesssim \left\Vert \nabla f\right\Vert_p for all p∈(q,2]p\in (q,2], which generalizes previous results due to Auscher and Coulhon. Our conclusion applies, in particular, when MM has a finite number of Euclidean ends. The proof strongly relies on Hardy inequalities, which are also new in this context and of independent interest. The second part of this work deals with analogous questions in fractal-like cable systems. In this framework, it was already proved by Chen, Coulhon, Feneuil and the second author that, in the Vicsek cable system, the inequality ∥Δ1/2f∥p≲∥∇f∥p\left\Vert Δ^{1/2}f\right\Vert_p\lesssim \left\Vert \nabla f\right\Vert_p may be false for all p∈[1,2)p\in [1,2). Following a recent joint work by the two authors and Yang, we examine the validity of inequalities of the form ∥Δγe−Δf∥p≲∥∇f∥p\left\Vert Δ^γe^{-Δ}f\right\Vert_p\lesssim \left\Vert \nabla f\right\Vert_p. In the Vicsek case, we give the optimal range of pp for which this inequality holds.

A spectral result for Hardy inequalities

Let P be a linear, second order, elliptic operator satisfying a Hardy inequality with potential W (i.e. P−W≥0P-W\geq0) and best constant αα. We give conditions so that the spectrum of W−1PW^{-1}P is [α,∞)[α,\infty). We apply this to several well-known Hardy inequalities: (improved) Hardy inequalities on a bounded convex domain with potential involving the distance to the boundary, and Hardy inequalities for minimal submanifolds of the Euclidean space.

A Gaussian estimate for the heat kernel on differential forms and application to the Riesz transform

Let (Mm,g)(M^m,g) be a m-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold which satisfies the n-Sobolev inequality and on which the volume growth is comparable to the one of Rn\R^n for big balls; if the Hodge Laplacian on 1-forms is strongly positive and the Ricci tensor is in Ln2±εL^{\frac{n}{2}\pm ε} for an ε>0ε>0, then we prove a Gaussian estimate on the heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian on 1-forms. This allows us to prove that, under the same hypotheses, the Riesz transform dΔ−1/2dΔ^{-1/2} is bounded on LpL^p for all $1

A perturbation result for the Riesz transform

We show a perturbation result for the boundedness of the Riesz transform : if MM and M0M_0 are complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying a Sobolev inequality of dimension nn, which are isometric outside a compact set, and if the Riesz transform on M0M_0 is bounded on LqL^q, then for all nn−2,theRiesztransformon\frac{n}{n-2}, the Riesz transform on Misboundedon is bounded on L^pprovidedthat provided that Misp−hyperbolicOR is p-hyperbolic OR M$ has only one end.

Hardy spaces and heat kernel regularity

In this paper, we show the equivalence between the boundedness of the Riesz transform dΔ−1/2dΔ^{-1/2} on LpL^p, p∈(2,p0)p\in (2,p_0), and the equality Hp=LpH^p=L^p, p∈(2,p0)p\in(2,p_0), in the class of manifold whose measure is doubling and for which the scaled Poincaré inequalities hold. Here, HpH^p is a Hardy space of exact 1−1-forms, naturally associated with the Riesz transform.

On the finiteness of the Morse Index for Schrödinger operators

Let H=Δ+VΔ+V be a Schrödinger on a complete non-compact manifold. It is known since the work of Fischer-Colbrie and Schoen that the finiteness of the negative spectrum of HH implies the existence of a function ϕϕ solution of Hϕ=0Hϕ=0 outside a compact set. This has consequences for minimal surfaces and for the finiteness of spaces of harmonic sections in the Bochner method. Here we show that the converse statement also holds: if there exists ϕϕ solution of Hϕ=0Hϕ=0 outside a compact set, then HH has a finite number of negative eigenvalues.
